Campus Solutions upgrade now complete

December 12th, 2021

The upgrade to Campus Solutions is complete. Staff, students and applicants can now continue to use the system.

Please note the following points:

  • Some staff cannot see their Campus Solutions favourites. If your favourites are not visible, you can use the search feature in Campus Solutions to find navigation links. We are continuing to investigate this issue as a priority
  • The link for accessing Campus Solutions/MyNottingham is now https://hub.nottingham.ac.uk (ensure you use this full link, including ‘https://’ at the beginning)
  • The login screen has a new, more contemporary look
  • The link for the Curriculum Catalogue has changed. There is now one new link for all campuses (UK, China and Malaysia)

What changes will academic staff notice?

Academic staff can continue to use the academic part of Campus Solutions, the Academic Workcentre, as they previously did. The only difference they will notice will be that the tiles in the Academic Workcentre are a different colour, with new icons. The names of the tiles remain the same.

What changes will Administrative, Professional and Managerial staff notice?

Instead of accessing the menu from the top of the screen, Administrative, Professional and Managerial staff now need to follow these steps to access the menu:

  1. Click on the compass icon in the top right-hand corner
  2. Click ‘Navigator’

A new Help tile on the Campus Solutions homepage provides support information as staff start using the upgraded system.

What changes will applicants and students notice?

Applicants and students used two systems called MyNottingham:

  • The university’s student mobile app is called MyNottingham. This app and name remains unchanged
  • The student-facing part of Campus Solutions is also called MyNottingham. To avoid confusion between this and the mobile app, the MyNottingham part of Campus Solutions has been renamed to NottinghamHub

The new name ‘NottinghamHub’ was chosen by asking a focus group of students, along with consulting with various university departments and representatives from our China and Malaysia campuses.

Applicants and students now see a new homepage with a new set of square tiles, replacing the old hexagonal buttons.

We have held webinars to introduce staff to the changes that the new version of Campus Solutions brings – details of future webinars can be found on Workspace, along with introductory videos and recordings.

Systems that receive data from Campus Solutions stopped receiving updates from 9am Thursday 9 December – the data will be updated in these systems by 9am Tuesday 14 December (UK times).

Thank you for your support as we completed this essential upgrade. It enables us to develop, improve and simplify Campus Solutions in the future to meet our requirements. There are also tools in the new version that make working with the system easier for staff and students, and we will highlight these as we start using them over time.

If you find something that is no longer working in Campus Solutions but previously was, please raise an IT self-service request and when you enter the description, start it with ‘9.2 upgrade’. For any other issues, please raise these with your respective IT Service Desk as normal.

Covid-19 – new restrictions introduced: update from Professor Andy Long

December 9th, 2021

Provost and Deputy Vice-Chancellor Professor Andy Long has written to all colleagues and students today following the introduction of new restrictions to combat the spread of the new Covid-19 Omicron variant in the UK.

Dear colleagues,

Last night, the government announced new measures to restrict the spread of the new Covid-19 Omicron variant in the UK. I am writing to update you on what these new restrictions mean for our university community.

Working on campus or from home

Guidance published by the Department for Education expects education settings to remain open for in-person teaching as planned. Colleagues who need to be on campus to enable this should continue to work on campus whenever necessary. This includes staff engaged in in-person teaching and those working in libraries, student services, hospitality, retail and domestic services, for example.

The established campus safety guidelines we have had in place since the beginning of this year have kept Covid-19 transmission rates low. Face coverings are mandatory in all indoor spaces, unless at least 1 metre separation can be maintained, full vaccination and weekly Covid testing is strongly encouraged.

However, in line with government guidance to help slow the spread of the virus, those who are able to fulfil the requirements of their role at home should discuss this with their manager and prepare to work from home where they can from Monday 13 December. Professional services hubs will remain open for those staff who would find it more effective for their work or wellbeing to work on campus.

Further advice on how the guidance applies to you, will be provided by your manager.

Research

Where research needs to be conducted on campus it should continue, and all research facilities and laboratories will remain open to support this. Staff and students conducting research on campus should follow all Covid safety measures including the wearing of masks and weekly testing.

Research students and their supervisors should decide whether research activity needs to be conducted on campus or can be continued at home. On campus research facilities remain open for research students.

Teaching

Guidance published by the Department for Education states that in-person teaching and student support services should continue. The university will retain the current blended approach to teaching both in-person and online for the remainder of term, and staff and students should continue to attend their timetabled sessions.

Whilst plans for in-person teaching operations in the new year currently remain unchanged, we will keep these under review and update staff and students as soon as is practicable after the point the government reviews the national restrictions, currently expected to be Thursday 30 December 2021.

Face coverings

The national restrictions requiring face coverings, unless exempt, will be extended to most indoor venues from Friday 10 December. Exemptions include restaurants, cafes and canteens, and gym and exercise facilities.

Face coverings are already mandatory in all indoor spaces on campus where you cannot socially distance to at least a metre, unless you are exempt.

Visit the government website for more information on face coverings, including a full list of places where they must be worn.

Covid testing and vaccination

Staff and students should continue to test for Covid-19 at least weekly, using the university’s asymptomatic testing service. The test is quick, simple and identifies infection at the earliest possible stage so that you can avoid transmitting illness to others.

Students are strongly encouraged to take a Covid-19 test before returning home for the seasonal break – and to take another test before their return to campus.

Please ensure you take up full vaccination and register for your booster vaccination when you are called by the NHS.

If you do develop symptoms, test positive, or are required to isolate because a close contact has tested positive, please complete our reporting form. This information is essential to help us track infections and manage potential outbreaks.

Students travelling to the UK

Students travelling to the UK will need to check and comply with border measures that have been introduced to help prevent transmission of Covid-19 on their arrival on campus. For more detail on requirements for students travelling to the UK, please refer to the government travel advice. Make sure you check restrictions again before you travel to ensure you have the latest requirements.

Close contacts of positive Omicron cases

Individuals identifies as close contacts of a suspected or confirmed case of the Omicron variant of Covid-19 – irrespective of vaccination status and age – will be contacted directly by NHS Test and Trace. They will be required to self-isolate immediately and to book a PCR test.

Otherwise, isolation rules are unchanged. Close contacts of non-Omicron positive cases are not required to isolate if they are fully vaccinated, or under the age of 18.

NHS Covid Pass

From Wednesday 15 December, larger-scale entertainment venues and events with a capacity of 500 or more will be required by law to check that all visitors aged 18 or over are fully vaccinated, have proof of a negative Covid test within the last 48 hours, or are exempt.

This does not apply to smaller scale settings such as pubs, bars or restaurants and as such will not apply to on-campus venues. However, face coverings remain mandatory in all indoor spaces, and weekly Covid testing and vaccination is strongly encouraged.

Please visit the government website for more details on where Covid Passes are required, and how to access yours.

Seasonal events and parties

The new restrictions do not suggest that seasonal events and parties should be cancelled, however, organisers should consider their guests’ views and exercise due caution. If your guests feel comfortable in attending planned celebrations, please observe all relevant restrictions including wearing of face coverings and encourage lateral flow tests prior to attending.

I appreciate that colleagues may be anxious about socialising at this time, and no one should feel obliged. Should you wish to postpone your party or event to a later date, your £10 staff festive party allowance remains valid for use later in the academic year.

Cases of Covid-19 have remained low on campus this term, but we must remain vigilant as we get closer to the seasonal break. Please continue to follow our on-campus guidelines and act cautiously and considerately to help us keep our campus and community as safe as possible.

We will, of course, continue to monitor the situation and keep our policies under review. I will update you with any changes or updates to national or local guidance over the coming weeks.

Best wishes

Andy Long

Headliner success for the Men’s University of Nottingham Football Team

We recently held our first Headliner event of the year at David Ross Sports Village. The Headliner is an event series, hosted by University of Nottingham Sport and supported by RedBull, showcasing our BUCS teams competing at the top level of university sport. The series is competitive, as our teams compete against other Universities at the top of the BUCS table and in BUCS competitions.

Hosted with our partners Red Bull, the event saw the University of Nottingham Men’s Football Club beat the University of Birmingham 2-0 to progress in the next round of the BUCS Trophy. In what was a brilliant occasion with a capacity crowd providing a fantastic atmosphere, we look forward to hosting further Headliner events in 2022. If you missed the event, you can watch the full live stream on our YouTube channel.

The event also saw us talk to our Welfare in Sport and Men’s Health Active teams to discuss important topics around student welfare at the University, and how sport is being used as a tool for positive change. These were hugely insightful interviews and we would recommend taking some time to give them a watch.

Movember

Our Headliner event also acted as a fundraiser for Movember which is also a fantastic cause that supports men’s health issues such as testicular cancer and men’s mental health. The campaign has been in full swing on campus throughout the month with many of our sports clubs raising incredible amounts of money. Through events and challenges, a huge total of over £60,000 has so far been raised to support Movember and men’s health causes.

Girls’ Night In returned to campus last month

The acclaimed Girls’ Night In returned to David Ross Sports Village last month as hundreds of students attended the event on the evening of Sunday 7 November. It was a great evening of fun, fitness and freebies, with loads of activities on offer for students to try in safe and comfortable environment. These included sports such as dodgeball,  mixed martial arts (MMA), women’s rugby and wheelchair basketball, with music, refreshments, giveaways and craft activities also happening on the night.

Competitive success for many of our clubs and athletes

November has seen a host of success for UoN Sport teams with numerous medals across different sports. At the start of the month, our powerlifters took part in the British Junior Nationals and came away with a clutch of medals, whilst one of our cross-country runners has won silver medals whilst on her exchange.

Now that we are firmly into winter we also saw success for our snow sport athletes in dry slope competition, and our canoeists won numerous medals at the BUCS Canoe Wild Water Racing Championships.

The end of November has seen racket sports come to the fore as our Tennis club saw doubles pairs win gold and silver, and we were delighted to host BUCS Table Tennis action that resulted in records for our Table Tennis club. To keep up to date with all of our success, you can regularly check the news section of our website.

Aside from competitions, we have had continued regular BUCS action taking place each Wednesday. This has resulted in consistent success for the #GreenandGold which sees us currently sit in frst place in the overall BUCS table for league sports. We look ahead to more achievements in the 2022.

EMCC Ltd – business to relaunch in 2022

December 6th, 2021

The East Midlands Conference Centre (EMCC) Ltd is set to be relaunched in 2022, developing a new hospitality brand for the multi-venue business. The EMCC will transition to a standalone business.

This move builds on a ten-year partnership with the hotels and leisure business De Vere, who have provided expertise and support to EMCC since the development and opening of the 202-bedroom, on-campus Orchard Hotel. De Vere will continue to work with EMCC over the next six months, to ensure a smooth transition to a standalone position in the market’. EMCC Ltd’s venues include the Orchard Hotel, East Midlands Conference Centre, Jubilee Conference Centre and the newly-launched Hugh Stewart House.

In 2020 EMCC underwent a £2.2m refurbishment, cementing the venue’s reputation as one of the most versatile in the region and enabling a strong return for the hotel and conference as business starts to regain momentum.. All surplus generated by EMCC is ploughed back into the university, representing up to 30% of the university’s commercial income pre-pandemic.

A spokesperson for Orchard Hotel and East Midlands Conference Centre said:

“Following our recent multi-million pound refurbishment and the relaunch of the EMCC, now is an appropriate time for us to look to the future and establish ourselves as a standalone hotel and conference venue. We look forward to moving into this new strategic direction with our excellent team.

A spokesperson for De Vere said:

“Innovation is at the heart of our hospitality business and we’re delighted to have been on this exciting journey with the Orchard Hotel and East Midlands Conference Centre. As their extensive refurbishment works come to an end, now seems like a natural point to enable the next phase of their development, as they look to take a standalone position in the market, with our full support.”

December 1st, 2021

Don’t miss out on the University of Nottingham Staff Moves+ Challenge which will be running from Friday 3 – Thursday 9 December 2021.

What is the challenge?

We are challenging staff at the university to collectively walk from Nottingham to the North Pole. The total distance is 2,560 miles which equates to 5,120,000 steps (roughly 2,000 steps per mile). Ideally, we’d like a minimum of 100 staff members to get involved and are recommending each staff member contributes 70,000 steps across the course of the week. Spot prizes will be given out during the week and the department with the most staff involved will win a hamper to share.

How can you get involved?

If you haven’t already, download the Moves+ app – either through the App Store or the Google Play Store. Select University of Nottingham Sport as your institution and click ‘Create an Account’. Use your @nottingham.ac.uk email address and connect a tracker of your choice to enable activity tracking and allow you to earn points for your movement.

Once you’ve downloaded the app, make sure you join the UoN UK Staff group and then keep an eye out for the challenge. You can’t join before the start date so set a reminder for Friday 3 December 2021.

For further information on the app, the benefits of joining and our FAQs, please visit our dedicated Moves+ webpage.

Introducing UoN Research Link

November 30th, 2021

UoN Research Link is a new online tool that lets you search for University of Nottingham colleagues according to research interests and expertise.

UoN Research Link can be used to identify potential research collaborators from across the University’s UK campuses. You can use the tool to search for any topic of interest and it will return a list of researchers working in related areas, along with a summary of each researcher’s interests.

This new tool will help academics establish new internal collaborations as well as research support staff who help with building teams for strategic transdisciplinary funding bids and project proposals.

You can access the tool here: https://researchlink.nottingham.ac.uk

The development of the tool was co-led by Jasper Donelan (Digital Research), Simon Gosling and Michela Mariani (both Faculty of Social Sciences, School of Geography), with support from the University’s ESRC Impact Accelerator Account (IAA) and 3DI (Data-Driven Discovery Initiative).

For further information, please contact jasper.donelan@nottingham.ac.uk

Working on and sharing confidential information correctly

November 30th, 2021

To help protect your data, we are asking staff and students to stop creating a 365 Group or a SharePoint ‘team site’. Due to an update to Outlook, some Group information and the membership can become visible.

To keep colleagues and information safe, use a Microsoft Team or a SharePoint Communications site to hold information and collaborate safely. Both of those are fully secure and do not reveal their membership (remember to not set anything to public!)

Instead, you can create a Microsoft Team (you can find guidance here) and ensure you keep it set to private. The image below shows the recommended choices for Teams:

Teams allows you to share information to subsets of people inside the Team.

If you are unsure of what a Group or Sharepoint Team site is, you can find information on them in this guide.

To ensure data is protected in line with UK GDPR, Digital and Technology Services have taken steps to hide Microsoft Groups from the email address book and Outlook. Users of groups will have received a number of emails titled ‘GDPR and your Microsoft Group’. These automated emails were required to inform Group members of the change to hide Groups from non-members to protect the Group title and membership.

If you were in receipt of these emails, they are for information only and no further action is required.

Further advice and assistance can be found here to help you migrate from a Group or a Sharepoint Team site to using a more suitable collaboration choice within 365 (a Comms Site or Microsoft Team).

If you would like to know more about the different choices around collaborating and storing data in 365, you can watch the video and guide, Shopfronts, Workshops, and Museums.
