Extra bike maintenance sessions are being made available on our UK campuses.
Dr Bike visits each of our Nottingham campuses every month to offer a free bike repair service as well as safety checks and general cycling advice. The service is very popular and more than 350 sessions were available to book in 2017.
To increase availability, sessions at our Nottingham campuses are now going to be available as 20 minute bookable slots rather than 30 minutes as before. This will lead to an extra 11 slots being available each month. There should be no impact on what mechanics are able to fix as the vast majority of issues with a bike can be addressed within 20 minutes.
The Dr Bike mechanic will also continue to visit City Hospital and Derby Hospital sites every quarter and will provide one extra booking slot at these sessions.
Additionally, the format of sessions at the Coates building will be changing to ‘open access’. This will mean that the Dr Bike services at this location can be completed without the need to book in advance. The service will run between 10am-2pm on specified dates, to increase the accessibility of the service for students.

Staff and students travelling to Jubilee can now use a new entrance to the campus, accessible from Derby Road.
The ‘South Entrance’ opened on Wednesday 3 January 2018, and will help improve access to Jubilee from the south. Available for use by cyclists, pedestrians and drivers, the entrance is located next to the recently completed Advanced Manufacturing Building which fronts onto Derby Road.
This entrance improves pedestrian and cycle connections with University Park’s North Entrance by removing the need to travel through adjacent areas of housing or travel up Triumph Road. Staff and students are encouraged to use the new route.
The entrance also opens Jubilee campus to a wider audience — providing views into the campus that haven’t previously been available.
The South Entrance only provides an entry to Jubilee, and can’t be used as an exit point: People leaving the campus should continue to utilise the Triumph Road and Wollaton Road routes, as these have controlled connections with the main roads.

Access from Science Road to the A52 will close during January 2018 to allow gas works to take place. There will be some changes to parking and bus stops along Science Road.
The gas works will take place from Monday 8 January for approximately three weeks.
This will enable National Grid to divert a gas main situated under the car park at the rear of Boots Science Building, ahead of scheduled building work to expand the Centre for Biomolecular Sciences.
Throughout the duration of the work:
- Car drivers will be encouraged to exit University Park via the North or West entrance. Traffic management and signage will be in place on East Drive to direct traffic.
- The Unite Bus and L12 bus services will be diverted via the South Entrance. All passengers who would usually catch these services from the Science Road bus stop (UN38) should instead use the East Drive bus stop (UN37 – near to the Portland Building).
- Parking spaces underneath the tram bridge (Ningbo Friendship Bridge) will be unavailable. Staff who usually park under the tram bridge are asked to use alternative spaces on University Park. Security will be liaising closely with the contractors to ensure the tram bridge car park is reopened as soon as possible.
Pedestrian and cyclist access on Science Road will be maintained throughout the works.
We would like to thank all staff for their patience during this period.

Three members of the University of Nottingham have been recognised by The Queen in the New Year Honours.
- Professor Chris Rudd, Pro-Vice Chancellor and Provost and CEO, University of Nottingham Ningbo Campus (UNNC) has been appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) for his services to Higher Education and Sino-British Cooperation.
- Martyn Davies, recently retired Professor in Biomedical Surface Chemistry, School of Pharmacy, has been appointed a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) for his services to Higher Education and science.
- John Middleton, Technical Manager, School of Physics and Astronomy, has been awarded a British Empire Medal (BEM) for his services to Higher Education and science.
Elsewhere Professor Terence Stephenson, former Dean of the Medical School and Professor of Child Health at the University and now Chair of the General Medical Council, was awarded a knighthood.
Professor Chris Rudd

Professor Rudd has developed an international reputation as a material scientist and has led UNNC as Provost since 2015. Alongside his academic success in developing patented lightweight structures and synthetic bone replacements he has played an integral role in furthering both Nottingham and the UK’s relationship with China. His leadership of UNNC has been recognised through numerous British and international awards and he is a board member of the China-Britain Business Council.
Since becoming Provost at UNNC, the first Sino/foreign university partnership in China, he has led on enhancing the quality of both research performance and student outcomes. He played a pivotal role in securing significant investment from Ningbo Municipal Government, Zhejiang Provincial Government, and business in wide-ranging initiatives driving growth and development of UNNC and the visibility of UK Higher Education in China more broadly.
Outside his leadership role, he has devoted significant time to fundraising both in the UK — where he has been a notable member of a team raising over £2m through cycling challenges for charitable causes and in China – where he has led fundraising initiatives for a new library at UNNC, an innovation fellowship and a scheme to recruit international scholars to the university.
Professor Martyn Davies

For more than 30 years at the University of Nottingham Professor Davies has made a significant professional, academic and commercial contribution to Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences. He joined the University in 1985 and took on the role of Head of School between 2000 and 2003. In his academic career he has published more than 425 scientific papers, supervised more than 70 PhD students and mentored more than 40 postdoctoral fellows.
At Nottingham he was a co-founder of the Laboratory of Biophysics and Surface Analysis, a group that become synonymous with leading innovation in advanced formulation analysis and development.
He has been involved in a number of spin-out companies including as a Co-founder and Chairman of the Molecular Profiles Ltd.
Molecular Profiles grew significantly impacting on the development of a wide range of medicines and was awarded the Queens Award for Industry in Enterprise. It was later sold and became part of Juniper Pharmaceuticals working on more than half of the world’s top 20 blockbuster drugs.
He has founded and chaired a number of international societies and is a member of the Royal Society of Chemistry as well numerous national and international scientific institutions.
John Middleton
In his 40 year career at the University of Nottingham John Middleton has made a pivotal contribution to the development of the School of Physics and Astronomy and championed the next generation of technical apprentices.
The School’s development and international successes would not have been possible without his technical leadership and unyielding dedication to support world-leading experimental physics at Nottingham.
Having joined as a technician in 1976, he played a key role in making the first magnet coils for the prototype magnetic resonance imaging instruments. Nottingham’s research in this field culminated in the award of a Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine to Sir Peter Mansfield in 2003.
His other major contributions include the design, installation and management of the cleanroom laboratories and mechanical engineering, high vacuum and cryogenic facilities which collectively underpin research on nanoscience and experimental condensed matter physics.
Vice-Chancellor of the University of Nottingham, Professor Shearer West, said: “I would like to congratulate Chris, Martyn and John and thank them for the huge contribution they have made to the university and beyond.
“Chris has been instrumental in building international links to underpin the Nottingham-Ningbo city-to-city partnership, recognised as pioneering by the Embassy in Beijing and Consulate in Shanghai; this partnership is widening to include Nottinghamshire and Zhejiang.”
“In his time at the University Martyn has contributed to world-changing research and seen his discoveries in medicines used widely today. Equally, over the last four decades, John has devoted himself to championing technicians and developing the knowledge of those around him.
“These are things we can all be extremely proud of and I am absolutely delighted they are receiving public recognition in this way.”

Calling all computer scientists and programmers. Do you have the skills to design an automated program to detect slavery sites in satellite images?
NGOs have found slaves manufacturing bricks in an area of North India and suspect there may be many more. Kilns similar to those where the slaves were found are visible in satellite images but NGOs do not have the resources to scan the images manually.
Can you use image analysis techniques to find brick kilns in satellite images? Researchers at UoN are laying down a challenge.
The Challenge
You will be provided with:
- Landsat, Sentinel and DigitalGlobe satellites
- An expert analysis, which located kilns for half of the area
Your challenge is to combine the expert’s data with your own computing skills to create an automated process that locates kilns in the second half of the area. You may use any combination of satellite data, including your own remote sensing data – on request.
Deadlines
- Predicted kiln locations must be submitted by 9am, Monday 12 February 2018
- You will receive feedback by 5pm, Friday 16 February 2018
- A brief methodology (four pages max) must be submitted by Saturday 21 March 2018
The most accurate entries will receive a £30 Amazon voucher, an invitation to present at a challenge workshop in March 2018 and the opportunity to co-author a paper or for further collaboration.
If you have any questions or requests for data, please contact Jessica Wardlaw or Giles Foody.
