Guardian University Awards & THELMAs

January 15th, 2018

The awards season for higher education is now open, with both the Times Higher and Guardian seeking entries to their annual awards to celebrate excellent practice in universities. Colleagues are encouraged to consider nominations that would profile the excellence found across our University.

Competition is intensive, and so to co-ordinate the highest standard of entries, colleagues are invited to submit a 300 word precis of their nomination to madalina.stalniceanu@nottingham.ac.uk by Friday 26 January 2018. These will be assessed and shortlisted by a senior panel led by Registrar Paul Greatrix. Shortlisted nominations will then go through to the respective competitions.

The THELMAs celebrate excellence in leadership, management and professional services including digital innovation, library, registry and student services, marketing and knowledge exchange. Nominations close on 14 February 2018 with an awards ceremony in London on 21 June 2018.

The Guardian University Awards celebrate a wide range of university innovation including research impact, teaching excellence, the student experience and internationalisation. Nominations close on 23 February 2018 with an awards ceremony in London w/c 23 April 2018.

The CASE Circle of Excellence Awards celebrate innovation in marketing, communications, fundraising and alumni relations, and the University secured a crop of awards last year for its Nottingham in Parliament Day. Nominations close on 9 March 2018 with an awards ceremony at the annual CASE conference in Edinburgh, early August.

Work commences on CBS expansion

January 12th, 2018

Building work for further expansion of the Centre for Biomolecular Sciences (CBS) will begin on Monday 15 January on University Park.

The expansion will provide a physical link between the existing CBS building and the Boots Science Building. When complete, it will house a number of formerly geographically-dispersed but complementary research groups and multidisciplinary teams, and will unlock space and facilities in the existing CBS building for the Green Chemicals Beacon.

The development forms a key part of both Global Strategy 2020 and the University of Nottingham’s Research Strategy.

Read more about the CBS expansion.

Parking adjustments

The first phase of building work on the CBS expansion will include an adjustment to parking facilities near to the Boots Science Building. Drivers are advised that around 60 parking spaces will be removed from this area from Monday 15 January to enable the construction to take place.

A review of the parking facilities on University Park has recently been carried out in order to improve the provision of spaces available. As a result 35 staff parking spaces have been reinstated adjacent to the Chemistry building.

We are also continuing work to implement:

  • Planned adjustments to parking layouts in the Engineering and Science area (to provide 32 additional staff parking spaces)
  • Planned adjustments to parking layouts at the front of Hallward Library (to enable re-instatement of 20 staff parking spaces)

Adjustments to these parking spaces were anticipated to be completed by January 2018 however progress has been slowed by recent inclement weather: wapologise for any inconvenience and will continue to complete these over the coming weeks.

Other areas available for staff parking on University Park also include:

  • Main visitors car park (230 staff spaces)
  • Lenton Hall Drive between Library Road and Derby Road (107 staff spaces)
  • Lincoln Hall car park off Cripps Hill (58 staff spaces)

Useful information for staff and students

January 11th, 2018

This year’s exam period commences on Monday 15 January and we will be welcoming students back to campus.

This is an exceptionally busy period in many students’ calendars so we’ve put together some useful information and resources to help make their return to University as smooth as possible. This includes exam resources, Refreshers events and other useful information such as updates to our Student Charter pages and security advice for staying safe both on and off campus.

All staff are asked to help point students to these useful resources. We also ask that staff familiarise themselves with the Student Charter pages and the security advice in particular, and bear the latter in mind for their own personal safety – especially if working late on campus.

Ingenuity18 applications are now open to staff

January 10th, 2018

As the home of MRI, The University of Nottingham has a long history of creating innovative solutions to the challenges the world poses us. Ingenuity18 is a journey of exploration, a re-engagement around the problems facing contemporary society, and a chance to discover disruptive and innovative solutions to how we address them. We’re looking to discover and develop the next generation of innovators in the UK, Malaysia and China, and equip them to go out into the world and lead change.

There is a range of events happening at the University from February — April 2018 that can help you realise your creative potential. Gain inspiration at the Ingenuity18 Ideas Summit, gain knowledge through the Ingenuity18 Innovation Diploma, and compete for the opportunity to pitch in front of a panel of investors.

For the first time ever, staff will also be able to apply to enter Ingenuity18, making it a fantastic opportunity for the whole University community to have their voice heard and develop their ideas for innovation. Working alongside colleagues, early career researchers, as well as students and alumni, it will be a chance to form unlikely allies, challenge perceptions, and make your mark on the innovation happening at the University.

Past students involved in the event have gone on to achieve amazing things: from the creation of affordable, high-quality defibrillators, to make-up brushes that empower cancer patients, and sustainable solutions to resource and energy crises around the world.

For these innovators, their entrepreneurial journey is not just about making money and being able to be their own boss. Their creativity and ambition enables them to tackle some of the biggest social and environmental injustices happening here in Nottingham, as well as in the wider world.

The value this can bring is exemplified through the work of last year’s Ingenuity competition winner, Emma Hartley. Since graduating from Product Design and Manufacturing in 2016, and dealing with the heartbreak of losing a friend and fellow student to cardiac arrest, she has gone on to develop a ground-breaking product that will enable defibrillators to become much more affordable and accessible.

“Every day, I realise more and more the impact my business could have on the world. If Pulse AED can save one person’s life, we have achieved our goal, and I’m going to keep pushing on until that happens.” — Emma Hartley, Pulse AED

If you have an idea for innovation that you want to explore and develop, and want to be part of events filled with like-minded people from the University, as well as world-class thinkers and industry innovators, make sure you get involved with Ingenuity18. Applications are now open.

Find out more about how to apply to Ingenuity18.

Ingenuity18 is open to all University of Nottingham students, alumni, early career researchers, and staff. Applications are open until Friday 26 January 2018.

National Student Survey 2018 – shape the future

January 10th, 2018

Final year undergraduate students will be invited to complete the National Student Survey (NSS) from Thursday 1 February. This offers them the opportunity to provide anonymous feedback about their experience at the University of Nottingham.

The NSS is now open and we will begin promoting it to students from Monday 29 January, after the exam period. They will not be contacted by the survey organisers – Ipsos MORI – until Thursday 1 February. The survey will then be available to complete until Monday 30 April. Members of schools/departments who are usually involved in promoting the NSS locally have already been contacted about this year’s communications campaign. If you were expecting to be contacted and have not yet heard anything, please email studentcommsoffice@nottingham.ac.uk.

We ask for the support of all staff in encouraging eligible final year students to complete the NSS. Please note that students should absolutely not be influenced on their responses. Contacts in schools/departments will shortly be sharing materials that staff can use to help encourage students to complete the NSS.

What is the National Student Survey?

The NSS is an annual survey that has been running since 2005. It’s made up of 27 questions, covering course teaching, assessment and feedback, academic support, learning resources, the Students’ Union and overall satisfaction. Responses are entirely anonymous.

What difference does it make?

Student feedback makes a huge difference to life at UoN. It lets us know what we’re getting right but, more importantly, it enables us to identify areas for improvement. The feedback is also published on the Unistats website, helping prospective students to make an informed decision when choosing the right course and university for them. Visit our NSS pages to find out more.

How long does it take?

It only takes 10 minutes to complete the survey and improve the experience at Nottingham for years to come. The survey consists primarily of single choice questions but does give the opportunity to leave open-ended comments.

When is the deadline?

The deadline for filling in the NSS is Monday 30 April.

Cyber security — keep IT safe

January 8th, 2018

A message from Jason Phoenix, Director of Service Delivery, Information Services:

As a large institution, the University of Nottingham will, from time to time, be targeted for malicious emails including spam, viruses, malware and phishing attacks. These emails can cause a lot of damage to University data but also could have significant personal impact, including financial consequences.

Please be vigilant – what to look out for

Spam emails could be received from a variety of email addresses. It is very important that you do not respond to these types of email and report any suspicious emails to the IT Service Desk.

Please do not open suspicious attachments or click on web links you suspect to be fraudulent as these may attempt to download documents containing malicious viruses.

Do not supply personal or bank details to people you do not know.

How to seek help and advice

If you are unsure about an email you have received or think you have downloaded a suspicious file, do not hesitate to contact the IT Service Desk or your local IT support team.

Some general advice to help avoid being caught by phishing attempts is as follows:

  • Never reply to emails asking for your personal details
  • Only open apps and attachments from trustworthy sources
  • Avoid sharing too much information on social media

Further information on how to spot a phishing attempt can be found on our phishing advice website.
