Brexit negotiations

December 18th, 2017

The HR webpages on Brexit have been updated to reflect the latest position following recent announcements on ‘phase 1’ of negotiations, which included citizenship and the future rights of EU residents in the UK; access to Horizon 2020 and Erasmus + beyond March 2019; and the UK’s future participation in EU programmes.

While these are considered to be a step in the right direction, the University continues to monitor the situation through our Brexit Taskforce, shaping the measures that will help us mitigate the impact of Brexit for our students, staff and the institution.

Innovative new Veterinary Surgical Training Academy delivers its first course

December 15th, 2017

A groundbreaking new Continuing Professional Development course — Veterinary Basic Surgical Skills (VBSS) — has been launched and delivered by the School of Veterinary Medicine and Science.

The two-day residential programme is the first of the newly formed Veterinary Surgical Training Academy, a collaboration with the University of Nottingham Veterinary School and Veterinary Instrumentation. The programme provides veterinary surgeons with practical surgical skills and orthopaedic techniques, underpinned by its ethos of ‘leading the way in safe surgery.’

The course has been inspired by the equivalent and very popular human surgeon course, Basic Surgical Skills, delivered by the Royal College of Surgeons. Their course is widely viewed as the cornerstone of surgical training and sets the standards for all trainees taking up their first surgical position.

The Vet School is applying for accreditation of the VBSS with the Royal College of Surgeons. The December course was attended by Eric Drabble, Course Director of Basic Surgical Skills for the Royal College.

Eric, who has trained well over 1,000 surgeons, said: “Rob and the team at the Vet School have been far-sighted and it’s a fantastic idea to develop a veterinary version of the human equivalent.

“The highest possible standards are demanded with surgery. The course is providing a wonderful opportunity to teach, enthuse and equip young veterinary surgeons with the basic skills and craft that will provide the foundation for their careers.”

Professor Rob White, Sub Dean for Continuing Professional Development at the School of Veterinary Medicine and Science, said: “We are delighted to offer the VBSS — the first course in our new Surgical Academy. We hope that it will help early career graduates to gain confidence in those first formative years of practice and above all, ensure that surgical procedures are safer. It has also been good to see those who have been in practice for some years attend — it’s a fantastic course for re-visiting techniques and procedures for reassurance and revision.

“Our team are constantly looking at how we contribute to the veterinary profession. We’re committed to providing vets with the knowledge, skills and support they need at whatever stage of their career.”

The course adds to the Vet School’s portfolio of Continued Professional Development, with a packed calendar of courses in place for 2018, including two re-runs of the VBSS course.

The next VBSS course takes place Wednesday 21 March and Thursday 22 March 2018. More information about the course, including details on how to apply, can be found on the School of Veterinary Medicine and Science website.

Beeston confirmed as 2017’s biggest Oxjam fundraiser

December 14th, 2017

With support from the University of Nottingham, the award-winning Oxjam Beeston Music Festival has broken its own fundraising record in 2017 — becoming the largest Oxjam festival by raising a staggering £22,000 for the international charity.

With a mantra of “local music global impact”, Oxjam Beeston was a community event driven by the generosity, goodwill and talent of local residents, musicians, venues, shops, businesses, schools, churches and other community organisations.

The main ‘Takeover’ event on Saturday 14 October 2017 attracted large crowds to Beeston for 12 hours of live music throughout the town. More than 100 live acts across 20 stages covered a wide range of genres — from rock, pop, indie and DJ sets, to choral, folk and jazz.

The day started with a midday flash mob by Nottinghamshire Rock Choir in Beeston Square and ended with a silent disco at Barton’s Depot at midnight. As well as the Takeover, other festival events included ‘Unplugged’, ‘Rock Night’, ‘Operatic Arias’, ‘Classical Oxjam’ and ‘The Oxjam Ceilidh’.

This year there were two UoN-sponsored stages at the Takeover, as well as a large contingent of student volunteers and a specially-developed Festival App from the School of Computer Science’s Mixed Reality Lab.

Tim Hunter, Oxfam GB Fundraising Director, commented: “Oxjam Beeston has been one of our flagship, volunteer-led Oxjam music festivals for some years now, and this year’s achievement of raising over £22,000 for Oxfam (their record total to date) is nothing short of inspiring. The team know their local music scene inside out, and their fundraising efforts have been incredible. The money raised from Oxjam Beeston will make a huge difference to those living in extreme poverty, and proves that local music really can have a global impact.”

Beeston consistently ranks highly in its fundraising achievements and has never been outside of the top three of around 40 Oxjam Festivals that take place across the UK. The festival won Oxfam’s Community Award in 2013, the Oxjam Partnership Award in 2014, and the Most Money Raised Award (£17,050) in 2015.

Festival Director, Colin Tucker, said: “Oxjam Beeston has raised over £80,000 for Oxfam since the event began in 2011. It’s a brilliant achievement that reflects the commitment of local volunteers and wider community to this worthy cause.”

Purchase card review

December 14th, 2017

A review of the policy and use of purchase cards is to be conducted by Financial Control and Procurement to ensure their use is consistently appropriate and justifiable.

Purchase card holders will be contacted to help support the aims of the review, and all staff are reminded of the purchasing policy that supports us all in spending correctly for University business.

The review will examine:

  • the number of cards as well as the application process for new cards;
  • the limits on the cards — both transactional and monthly;
  • a reduction in the number of Merchant Category Codes (MCC) to align with the purchasing policy; and
  • potential cancellation of cards where they are not regularly reconciled.

Mailroom collection and delivery — holiday timings

December 14th, 2017

The last day of mailroom operations before the holiday period is Friday 22 December. Please note the following collection and delivery timings:

  • To ensure that the mailroom is cleared of all parcels and letters over this period we have requested that couriers deliver items no later than 12:00 noon on Friday 22 December. This will allow time for personal items to be processed and collected from the mailroom.
  • In terms of collection, ‘specials’ and ‘signed for’ items should be ready for collection no later than 1:00pm and all other items will be collected items no later than 2:00pm on that day.

Where possible we also ask staff to minimise personal orders on this date to avoid a last minute rush which could compromise the service for all.

The mailroom will re-open on Wednesday 3 January 2018.
