Explore Britain’s Viking past

November 23rd, 2017

Prepare for a Viking invasion this winter with two unique exhibitions at Lakeside Arts — and a number of exciting associated events.

Over the coming months, Lakeside Arts will be presenting two significant exhibitions which aim to tell a new Viking story, reveal how the Vikings transformed and shaped every aspect of life in Britain and delve deeper into their fascinating world.

The programme builds on numerous University of Nottingham strengths including one of the world’s leading experts on the Vikings, Professor Judith Jesch; the Centre for the Study of the Viking Age; and the University of Nottingham Museum.

There will also be a number of workshops, talks and activity days taking place to support and enhance the exhibitions.

The exhibitions are:

  • Viking: Rediscover the Legend
    Saturday 25 November 2017 – Sunday 4 March 2018
    Djanogly Gallery, Lakeside Arts
This major touring exhibition aims to depict what the Vikings were actually like rather than simply the popular myths that surround them, and challenge the misconception that they were just violent raiders and warriors.

It provides new interpretation and a fresh perspective in order to understand what it really meant to be a Viking — bringing together significant Anglo-Saxon and Viking artefacts including some of the most well-known hoards ever discovered in this country.

  • Danelaw Saga: Bringing Vikings Back to the East Midlands
    Friday 15 December 2017 – Sunday 8 April 2018
    Weston Gallery, Lakeside Arts
Invade, immigrate, integrate, inspire… ‘Danelaw Saga’ tells the tale of how the Vikings shaped the East Midlands.

Visitors can map the routes of Viking expeditions, view coins brought from the Middle East to the East Midlands, learn about places whose names evoke our Viking past and explore their heritage further with artefacts and jewellery worn by the Viking women that settled here.

Danelaw Saga will be the first exhibition to explore the considerable Viking influence on the East Midlands and a unique opportunity for visitors to examine Viking influences on the region.

Bringing Vikings Back to the East Midlands

Supporting and enhancing the two exhibitions will be a huge number of talks, workshops and activity days for all ages, including:

2017/18 Pay Negotiations and the Voluntary Living Wage

November 23rd, 2017

A revised and final offer was made last week to the UNISON and Unite trade unions in the 2017/18 pay negotiations, which would mean a 1.7% uplift for staff represented by them, with higher increases for staff up to pay point 16.

This would mean the minimum staff salary for 2017/18 would be equivalent to the latest Voluntary Living Wage rate of £8.75, payable from its announcement by the Voluntary Living Wage Foundation on 6 November 2017.

The move would also overcome the time lag experienced in 2016/17, where the Voluntary Living Wage was announced in November, but applied to salaries the following August.

Vice Chancellor Professor Shearer West said: “I am pleased that this offer would mean the University could pay the equivalent of the Voluntary Living Wage in 2017/18, and reflects the University’s wider and longstanding commitment to its lowest paid members of staff.”

Copies of ‘True Crime on Campus‘ — published by University of Nottingham Registrar Paul Greatrix — are available online, with half of the profits supporting the Children’s Brain Tumour Research Centre.

Students, staff and visitors often do the strangest things. From zombie apocalypse and unexplained beeping incidents to Quidditch and scrabble accidents it really is all kicking off on campus. Pigeons, tigers, ninja turtles and a tarantula are all involved and there is much strange behaviour and many unfortunate events..

True Crime on Campus has been published by Paul Greatrix, Registrar of the University of Nottingham, since 2010. Blogging under the banner of Registrarism at Wonkhe, the home of higher education wonkery, many hundreds of bizarre, unfortunate, inexplicable and just plain weird campus crime reports have appeared over the years.

Staff, students and anyone interested in what really happens outside the university lecture room will enjoy these very real examples of True Crime on Campus.

Half of any profits from the sale of this book will be given to support the Children’s Brain Tumour Research Centre at the University of Nottingham, to help create a brighter future for children with brain tumours.

‘Excellent’ rating for University of Nottingham Malaysia

November 17th, 2017

The University of Nottingham Malaysia has been awarded Tier 5 (Excellent) status in the rating system for Malaysian higher education institutions by the Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA) under the Ministry of Higher Education Malaysia.

The objective of the rating system, known as SETARA, is to enhance the quality of higher education in Malaysia. This exercise involves a rigorous assessment by MQA of the following criteria:

  • institutional profiles
  • teaching and learning
  • research capacity
  • services and income generation.

The University also has a 5-star rating in the Malaysian Research Assessment exercise (MyRA) — making it the highest rated international university in Malaysia in terms of the quality of its research and innovation.

2017 marks the seventh year that the University of Nottingham Malaysia has held the award of ‘Excellent’ status from SETARA and Self-Accreditation Status from MOHE. The University’s research excellence has also been recognised with a 5-star rating in MyRA since 2014.

University of Nottingham Malaysia’s Vice-Provost (Teaching & Learning) Professor Ong Fon Sim said:

“The University of Nottingham Malaysia is proud to play its role in the Malaysian higher education environment. This rating is an acknowledgment of our contribution to the broader aims of the Malaysian Higher Education Blueprint.”

University of Nottingham Malaysia’s CEO and Provost, Professor Graham Kendall, added: “We are proud that we are continually highly rated in exercises such as MyRA and SETARA, as well achieving in many other areas of both student and staff activity.

“As a UK university that has been in Malaysia for almost 20 years we feel that we are now an established part of the higher education landscape and make a recognised contribution to the sector. Ratings such as SETARA and MyRA validate what we are doing, but we are conscious that this is just a snapshot of our performance at a given point in time and that we have to continually develop and improve.”

Travelling to Jubilee? Hopper buses resume usual schedule from Friday 17 November

November 16th, 2017

Hopper buses serving Jubilee campus resumed their normal schedule Friday 17 November following the early completion of repairs to the main spine road.

The bus stops outside Newark Hall and The Exchange Building had been closed since Saturday 28 October with the Jubilee hopper bus, City Hospital hopper bus and NCT service 31 utilising alternative bus stops while the roadworks took place.

Early projections had expected the roadworks to be completed by Sunday 19 November. However, the completion date has now been brought forward and the affected hopper buses will return to their normal routes (stopping at The Exchange Building and/or Newark Hall) from the start of service on Friday 17 November.

You can view all hopper bus timetimes here.
