Triumph Road partially closed to traffic during November weekends

November 15th, 2017

The second phase to demolish the Imperial Tobacco Bonded Warehouse buildings on Lenton’s Triumph Road has now commenced. Road closures will be implemented during the third and fourth weekends in November to allow for the works to be progressed adjacent to the Triumph Road/Wollaton Road junction.

The demolition project has already seen the removal of one of the seven storeys towers next to Wollaton Road. The second phase of work, now taking place, will involve the clearing of tower near to Triumph Road.

To enable the safe demolition of the building, Triumph Road will be closed to traffic entering to/from Wollaton Road during the following weekends:

  • Saturday 18 November – Sunday 19 November
  • Saturday 25 November – Sunday 26 November

There will also be controlled changes at the Triumph Road/Wollaton Road Junction.

Triumph Road will remain open at the junction with Derby Road and this will allow access to Jubilee Campus.

The work is not expected to have any effect on the operations of the Jubilee hopper bus, which will be be running on its normal route as of Friday 17 November. All of the demolition work will be contained within the demolition site, with minimal impact anticipated on everyday operations at Jubilee campus.

The old John Player warehouses, located on the University’s Jubilee campus, were built by John Player and Sons to house 20,000 tons of tobacco leaf. Operations at the buildings ceased in 2016 and the University acquired the site for redevelopment. The third and final tower on the site will be cleared in 2018; more details related to clearance of the third tower will be sent out in due course.

The material from the warehouses will be recycled and eventually used in the construction of new roads and buildings. Once cleared, the buildings will provide a development site that will enable the University of Nottingham to continue the progressive and sustainable development of our world-class campuses.

Organisational Effectiveness (Student Support) and Timetabling Reviews — have your say

November 15th, 2017

Earlier this month, the Vice-Chancellor announced two reviews. Membership of the review groups, including chairs and sponsors, have now been confirmed.

  • The Organisational Effectiveness (Student Support) Group is chaired by Professor Sarah Sharples and its UEB sponsor is Professor Jeremy Gregory. It will look at how we support our students during their time at University.
  • The separate Timetabling Review will specifically examine the complex timetabling process, and how this can be improved for students and staff. This will be chaired by Professor Phil Shipway and the UEB sponsors are Breda Walls and Professor Sarah O’Hara.

To see the full membership of the review groups, visit the workspace.

Organisational Effectiveness (Student Support) Review

Consultation workshops for the Organisational Effectiveness (Student Support) Review will begin next week and colleagues are encouraged to sign up through the workspace.

These workshops have been designed so that all who participate can share their views and explain their ideas for solutions.

The events will focus on drawing out ideas through work in small groups, so there will be limited numbers for each event. If your chosen events are fully booked, please register on the wait list and we will try to add more events to meet demand.

An online consultation space is also available for colleagues to share their views

Review Sponsor, Professor Gregory, said: “We look forward to working with colleagues across the University, and with our students, to identify solutions to the issues which have been raised with the Vice Chancellor about how our new arrangements for student support are working in practice. A strong task group has been appointed to undertake the review and at its first meeting all members of the group committed to taking an open, independent and solutions-focused approach to the work.”

Review Chair, Professor Sharples, added: “We have a great deal to look at in a very short period of time and are committed to taking seriously all the comments and suggestions which are received. We want to make it easy for you to contribute your concerns and ideas.

“Some of you will already have flagged issues and concerns through other routes, such as the Professional Services Quality Survey, or your ongoing dialogue with relevant departments. The review will be looking at as much existing material as we can access. However, to make sure that your views are taken into account we would greatly appreciate you engaging with the consultation through the workshops and workspace as well.

“The review group will consider all the issues and proposed solutions which you raise. Thank you in anticipation for supporting us in this important task.”

Timetabling Review

UEB sponsors Professor Sarah O’Hara and Breda Walls said: “We are collating feedback that has already been provided by staff and students through a variety of mechanisms and will use this to inform the review. We will undertake some deep dive exercises to identify solutions that should have a positive impact on the timetabling process for 2018/19. The Strategic Change Unit will contact a number of people directly involved in the process to examine the issues closely.”

Professor Shipway, Timetabling Review Chair, said: “We have identified a number of areas we want to look at within the timetabling process to really understand what impacts on this complex process. The Review Group has representatives from all faculties and professional services so they will be able to analyse the feedback thoroughly.”

We are keen to talk to colleagues and students about their experiences, views and ideas. You can contribute to the Timetabling Review, by emailing TTreview@nottingham.ac.uk, either to share information or request a discussion with the Strategic Change Unit.

Flexible working guidelines for managers

November 15th, 2017

The University is committed to supporting flexible working that enables both the needs of the University and the individual to be met.

In response to the feedback from staff to the Athena Swan Survey, work has taken place to produce guidelines to support managers when considering and managing flexible working requests. We have consulted with a variety of colleagues to develop the guidelines, taking into account current working practices which exist across the University.

The guidelines aim to support managers to consider practically how a flexible working request may be able to be accommodated, covering the various flexible working requests which may arise and pointers to consider when assessing whether the request can be accommodated with a view to continuing to both achieve the University’s objectives and priorities and support employees in their work life balance.

Examples of flexible working are included, along with the benefits and potential implications of agreeing the various flexible working requests which may arise.

The guidelines also differentiate between formal and more informal requests and the steps which should be taken to consider and make decisions based on these different requests.

The guidelines are available on the HR website and support the existing Flexible Working Policy.

If you have any queries relating to the principles of flexible working and understanding these guidelines or to discuss specific cases and individual flexible working requests please contact Employee Relations (HRER@nottingham.ac.uk).

Introducing Disability December 2017

November 15th, 2017

Disability December 2017 is nearly here — it’s the second year that we have celebrated this programme at the University of Nottingham.

The University of Nottingham’s Disability December programme stems from International Day of Persons with Disabilities which falls on 3 December each year. This day aims to promote empowerment for people with disabilities, helping to create real opportunities in all aspects of life.

Sarah Stephenson-Hunter, Chair of the Disabled Staff Network says:

“It is important to celebrate Disability December because it helps to raise awareness of the difficulties experienced by people with disabilities. As an institution we will not be able to challenge these issues if we do not feel able to talk about them. This is what we hope to do during December. We also want to celebrate the diversity within our communities at the University and learn from others with different experiences and unique perspectives on the world around us.

Disability December also gives us the opportunity to promote the importance of disclosure of disabilities in the workplace. The recent apprenticeship reforms mean that anyone, regardless of their age or past qualifications, can become an apprentice. Professional Development has now launched an initiative called the ‘Work, Learn, Qualify programme’ to provide development opportunities for staff across the University.

Here are some of the key reasons to consider undertaking the Work, Learn, Qualify programme:

Nottingham Student Experience Survey

November 10th, 2017

The Nottingham Student Experience Survey is now open — with all students encouraged to let us know their thoughts about the University of Nottingham.

The survey provides a chance for our students to make a difference at the University. It’s a way for them to tell us what they feel is working well, what’s frustrating, and what we can do to improve.

The Student Experience Survey will directly impact the decisions we make when it comes to teaching, libraries and IT, student support services and campus facilities.

By now, all of our students will have received an email containing a personalised link to the survey. After they complete the survey, they’ll also be entered into a prize draw (One University of Nottingham student will win a £200 Amazon voucher, while one lucky winner of an international prize draw will take away £1,000).

Staff can support the survey by encouraging students to get involved.

The survey can be found here. It closes on Friday 1 December.
