Perform exercise and help with groundbreaking research!

April 9th, 2019

The Molecular and Metabolic Physiology group are looking for women and men to take part in a research study looking at the effects of ingesting protein after resistance exercise.

People respond to feeding with protein by increasing the production of new protein in their muscle, a process known as muscle protein synthesis (MPS). This response has been found to be further increased when combined with resistance exercise. The optimal dosing of protein to maximise MPS has been the subject of much debate and little is known as to the optimal protein needed. We wish to test how much protein is needed post exercise in both women and men for maximal muscle growth.

Volunteers will be required to undergo a medical screening visit, a strength assessment and a further 3 more visits to the medical school, with the time commitment for the whole study being 12hrs. Volunteers must be 18-35yrs old, male or female who regularly do resistance exercise.

Further information can be found on the  website. To get involved please email Dr Joanne Mallinson on joanne.mallinson@nottingham.ac.uk.

An inconvenience allowance will be provided. The study is taking place now until October 2019.

University colleague’s challenge for cancer research

April 3rd, 2019

A team member from Campus IT support is cycling their way through more than 1,400 miles’ worth of routes this year, to raise money for cancer research.

Simon Green, IT Support Assistant in Campus IT Support West, will initially take on the 112-mile Fred Whitton Challenge on 12 May 2019 – a route that totals of more than 3,900 metres of climbing, taking in five of the UK’s hardest mountain passes including Kirkstone, Honister, Newlands and finishing with the brutal 33% gradient Hardknott & Wrynose Passes.

Later in the summer, he’ll be covering 1,000 miles in one week, and on another day he is set to cycle from Nottingham to Brighton – a distance of 200 miles.

Finally, he will be taking part in the 95-mile ‘Rise Above Sportive’ event in August, where he’ll be cycling in a team alongside event organiser Mark Cavendish.

Simon is fundraising for Macmillan Cancer Support, and has currently raised nearly £2,000 for the charity this year throughout sponsorship of the events. Details can be found on his JustGiving page.

Rail travel updates have arrived

April 3rd, 2019

Improvements to the Business Travel and Expenses Rail contract on workspace have been completed and users will now be experiencing the new look and feel for purchasing UK rail tickets.

The improvements are in collaboration with the TrainLine for Business, a user friendly service that many customers will already be familiar with. Key changes mean that users no longer have to “pay and claim” as they had to previously.

A booking can now be made using just a project code (with pre approval to purchase) and the transaction will be imported to Agresso for Financial accounting. This means a time saving, especially for regular train users, and a more streamlined workflow.

Jeannette Harrison, Travel and Expense Services Manager, said: “The switch to the Trainline will enable us to improve the service in a number of hidden ways as well as the great improvements for our customers”.

In addition to promoting the new service we are thanking our passengers for using mobile phone tickets as much as possible to reduce printing and posting. We are also happy to see customers booking specific travel times as opposed to anytime tickets which dramatically reduces cost. The team has been working extremely hard towards the changes and deserves a big thank you.”

Regular users of the service should be aware of changes to the University’s Travel and Expenses Policy which include a move to Standard Class and a requirement for pre booking tickets.

WasteNott funding: call for applications

April 2nd, 2019

Do you have an idea to reduce waste at the University? You can now apply for funding to support reduction of single-use plastic on campus.

As part of the #WasteNott campaign, we are offering funding for items or infrastructure that will help offices, departments, or student societies to reduce and replace single-use plastic and disposable items. This includes, but is not limited to, drinks cups, cutlery, drinks stirrers in offices and workspaces across the University — or another initiative to reduce single-use plastic and disposables.

Up to £300 is available per applicant and it is expected that your department or student group/club/society will also part finance your proposal. Funding will be available on a first come first served basis up to the final date of Friday 28 June 2019.

Please note that funding is not guaranteed and each application is reviewed on its own merit and within the context of a total fund of £5,000 that has been allocated for this call.

Application forms, and further information, can be found on the WasteNott website: https://www.nottingham.ac.uk/wastenott/resources/wastenott-funding.aspx.

This call for applications is supported by the proceeds of the WasteNott latte levy. The levy was implemented in September 2018 and applies 20p per disposable hot drink cup used in University cafés. All proceeds of the levy will be used for initiatives to reduce waste.
