The School of Education and Professor Shaaron Ainsworth present this seminar.

Blurb from Prof Ainsworth: When students are learning complicated new ideas, interpreting and constructing multiple forms of representation such as graphs, pictures or animations can bring unique benefits. In other words, representations are powerful tools for learning but like all powerful tools, they need careful handling if learners are to use them successfully. In this talk I want to discuss what recent research in cognitive science has to say about why, when and for whom (particular combinations) of representations are beneficial. However, I shall argue that is not enough: we must also uncover how best to support learners to make meaning from visual representations.
