Employers’ top target

The UK’s top investment banks, law firms and consultancies have cited Nottingham as one of the best universities for finding graduate recruits.

High Flier Research says the University is one of only a handful producing graduates targeted by the UK’s leading employers. The report is based on research conducted during December 2012 with the UK’s 100 leading graduate employers, including BP, the Civil Service, IBM, Goldman Sachs, PwC, Google and HSBC.

The University was second in the list of universities targeted by the most top employers in 2012-13. Warwick was first, Cambridge fourth and Oxford the seventh-most targeted.

Registrar Dr Paul Greatrix said: “Our graduates do exceptionally well and we have some of the highest employment rates in the UK, with our average salary levels for Nottingham graduates being above the UK average.  More importantly, students will not only receive a first-rate academic experience, both in the UK and internationally, but they will also have a well-rounded and rich experience during their time here, which will enable them to acquire skills and additional learning from extra-curricular activities. We are particularly proud of our Nottingham Advantage Award, which is a scheme specifically run to enhance our students’ skills whilst studying their degree.”

Calling all PhD alumni

The Careers and Employability Service would like to hear from Nottingham PhD graduates interested in contributing their career profile or becoming an eMentor for current students. Our Career Profile and eMentoring scheme has been running since 2010 and its focus has been on supporting undergraduates as they transition into graduate employment.

We wish to extend this service to PhD students and early career post-doctoral research staff who are considering careers outside academia. Clare Jones, senior careers adviser providing careers support and development for PhDs and research staff, said: “PhDs and postdocs do value reading about, or being able to talk to researchers who have moved into diverse careers. They want to know more about the work they could be involved in, working environments and cultures and also to know that it is possible to have a fulfilling and interesting career outside academia.

“Career Profiles and eMentoring is an excellent and effective way for current PhDs and postdocs to become more informed about career pathways, to understand the opportunities and challenges that they could face and to be able to present themselves effectively to a prospective employer.”

The Careers Service would like to hear from you no matter what your background and current role, whether you have moved out of academia recently or graduated some time ago. Please contact Jenny Patchitt at: jenny.patchitt@nottingham.ac.uk
