Update on the GSK Carbon Neutral Laboratory for Sustainable Chemistry

December 16th, 2014

Some of you may be aware that there has been some activity taking place on the site of the GSK Carbon Neutral Laboratory for Sustainable Chemistry at the Jubilee Campus. Our contractor, Morgan Sindall, has been working at the site for a couple of weeks now, clearing the fire debris in preparation for the start of building works.

The fire investigation work by the emergency services is now concluded and has not identified any wrongdoing or arson associated with the fire.

We are currently planning the rebuild activity and we will be able to further update you of dates and timescales in the New Year once the site has been fully cleared. We are hopeful however that the delay to the project will be no more than 12 months in total, although this is still to be confirmed.

We want to let staff know that our rebuild planning is based on the same design principles using the same team of consultants and main contractor as before. It is still our commitment to deliver a carbon neutral chemistry laboratory that defines building methods and operating protocols for a more sustainable future.

Take part in survey to shape the future of hearing loss research

December 11th, 2014

Has your life been touched by hearing loss? Take part in a survey and you could help shape the future of research into the condition.

The survey into the prevention, diagnosis and management (treatment) of mild to moderate hearing loss is being coordinated by the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) Nottingham Hearing Biomedical Research Unit (BRU) at The University of Nottingham, and has been developed by the James Lind Alliance Priority Setting Partnership with funding from the Nottingham Hospitals Charity.

The Partnership is keen to hear the views not only of patients affected by hearing loss, but also their friends and family members, as well as professionals working in this area.

Take part in the online survey, which is open until the end of December.

More information can be found on our Press Office website. The Partnership can also be contacted by email at JLAhearing@nottingham.ac.uk and followed on Twitter at @JLAhearing

Temporary changes to Sutton Bonington Hopper Bus timetable

December 10th, 2014

From Monday 15 December 2014, when the Sutton Bonington hopper bus (901) commences the out-of-term service, the 7.30am journey from Sutton Bonington to University Park will be temporarily withdrawn.

When the term-time service recommences on Monday 12 January 2015, the 7.30am bus from Sutton Bonington to University Park will be replaced by a bus departing Sutton Bonington at 7am.

These changes are temporary measures to improve the reliability of morning services and reflect the increased travelling time required during peak hours.

Latest on Global Strategy 2020

December 10th, 2014

No institution can afford to stand still.

Even a university like Nottingham, with all its strengths, has to keep evolving to ensure it remains the kind of place where students want to study and staff want to work. That’s why we’ve been working hard over the last year to develop Global Strategy 2020.

We do lots of things very well, but there are areas where we could do better. Our staff and our students have told us this, and doing so will help us to better meet their expectations.

Much of the initial work on Global Strategy 2020 has now been completed. With input from colleagues from all over the University, we have a clear destination in mind. We know where we want the institution to be in five years’ time, in terms of teaching, research, student experience, internationalisation and all the other aspects that make the University of Nottingham distinctive.

But it’s no good having a destination without a map of how to get there.

Since summer this year, when the Strategy was approved by University Council, we’ve been creating just that – a five-year roadmap to ensure our University gets to where it needs to be.

The roadmap is made up of a range of plans to implement the Strategy across the University – from the way we handle student data to the way we reward excellent teaching, to how we nurture our best young researchers and develop more international collaborations.

2015 will see the start of the implementation process in earnest as we work to align plans in the roadmap with the plans of Schools and Professional Services.

School and department plans are beginning to reflect the agendas driven by the Strategy, and we can expect to see changes starting to filter through as a result. Some changes will relate to major projects like Project Transform, which is part of the overall Strategy. Others strands of activity will be equally important in ensuring the University remains a top choice for students and staff in the future.

In the New Year I look forward to sharing with you more details of this exciting work, via a dedicated website, printed material, at a series of open forum events and via this blog, as we start to bring Global Strategy 2020 to life.

Professor Karen Cox

Deputy Vice-Chancellor

The University of Nottingham

Traveling to and from Ebola affected countries over the Christmas period

December 8th, 2014

As we approach the end of term, the University is aware that students may travel home to visit family and friends in countries affected by the Ebola Virus.

Precautions to take while in the country

The risk of Ebola is low for most travellers but you should take precautions while in an affected region.

  • Avoid contact with symptomatic patients and their bodily fluids
  • Avoid contact with corpses and/or bodily fluids from deceased patients
  • Avoid close contact with live or dead wild animals (including monkeys, forest antelopes, rodents and bats)
  • Avoid preparation and consumption of “bush meat”
  • Avoid habitats which might be populated by bats, such as caves, isolated shelters or mining sites
  • Wash and peel fruits and vegetables before consumption
  • Practise safe sex
  • Follow strict hand washing routines

Port screening

Students may be subject to both exit screening at ports on leaving the country and entry screening on entering the UK

What is the entry screening process?

All those travelling from the affected countries will have their temperature taken and complete a questionnaire asking about their current health, recent travel history and whether they might be at potential risk through contact with Ebola patients.  Based on the information provided and their temperature, passengers will either receive advice and be allowed to continue their journey, or undergo a clinical assessment by PHE staff and if necessary be transferred to hospital for further tests. Anyone who is well but may have been at increased risk of contact with the Ebola virus will  be given printed information and a PHE contact number to call if they develop symptoms.

Where will the entry screening take place?

The UK has introduced enhanced screening to key UK ports: Heathrow, Gatwick, Birmingham and Manchester airports, plus St Pancras (Eurostar).

Following return to the UK [PDF]

  • the risk of Ebola is low for most travellers
  • however, malaria is a much more common infection in West Africa and can have similar early symptoms. It is treatable if diagnosed quickly, so contact NHS 111 for advice if you feel unwell
  • if you are staying in the UK and develop symptoms such as:

– fever (37.5˚C or higher)
– headache
– body aches
– diarrhoea
– vomiting

within 21 days of returning from Sierra Leone, Guinea or Liberia, you should contact NHS 111 and tell them where you have travelled.
