Fifteen years ago we established the UK’s first overseas campus in Malaysia.
As part of the anniversary celebrations, we want to share the memories of staff who have worked out there over the years.
We will host your thoughts and comments and (if possible) photographs (and the stories behind them) on our anniversary web pages.
If you are happy to be interviewed, please drop Emma Lowry an email, outlining your:
The University of Nottingham in Malaysia (UNMC) is holding events throughout 2015 to celebrate 15 years as a pioneer of transnational education. Based in Semenyih, UMNC was established as the UK’s first overseas campus in Malaysia and one of the first world-wide.

The first element of Project Transform, Enquiries Light, is set to launch on Monday 11 May — marking the first change to the University’s processes and technology connected to the student journey. The second GoLive covers areas including Admissions and takes place in September 2015.
The final GoLive focuses on the student record system from registration to graduation — aiming to create a modern, user-friendly system for students to manage their time at University. Launching in September 2016, the system will also enable staff to manage student information and support more efficiently, further improving relationships and interactions between students and the University.
As part of this work we need to consider how best to organise student-facing support to enhance our student services. We expect this process to also deliver efficiencies. Based on previous work undertaken by Capita we anticipate that once the new systems, processes and organisation design have been fully implemented there will be ongoing savings of around 23% of related costs.
As the project progresses we will develop a programme of support for staff going through these changes. This includes upskilling existing staff to work in changed roles on new systems, and providing clearly mapped career pathways.
Collection of data on APM job roles connected to the student journey is now complete — thanks to all who provided this. We now have a comprehensive picture of activities across the University.
Workshops have also given school and department managers the opportunity to feed in to the new organisation design models. Now, a smaller working group will further develop these models based on the discussions so far and on further consultation and evidence gathering. Members of the working group will report back to the broader community in due course.
A decision on which model will be taken forward is expected by July 2015. All job roles will be in place ready for the final stage of Project Transform – Go Live 3 – launching in September 2016, with the first stage of organisation change being to determine the senior management structure.
We recognise that there is an element of uncertainty around these plans, but expect a clear way forward by the start of the next academic session. We will keep you updated on progress, both through general University communications and via your school and department managers.
Thank you to all those who have worked with Project Transform so far. I’m looking forward to working with many more colleagues across the University as the project progresses.

Three University of Nottingham nursing and midwifery students have been awarded runner-up prizes at the Cavell Nurses’ Trust Awards 2015 in London.
Robert Gorton, Natahsa McVey and Nicola Fisher were runners up respectively for the Outstanding Student Nurse Award, the Community Award and the Outstanding Academic Achievement Award. The students travelled down to the awards ceremony at the Fishmongers’ Hall in London, where they met Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal. As runners up, they also won laptops/tablets to support their studies.
An amazing honour
Robert said: “It’s such an amazing honour to have even been shortlisted, let alone winning at the awards. I just want to stress how important it is to everyone who is enthusiastic and passionate about nursing, that they take every opportunity they can and use their experiences to help the lives of patients, colleagues and themselves, to become the best nurse they can be.
“Grasping everything that’s come my way has led me to developing into the nurse I always wanted to be, in addition to being part of this amazing experience. To all of you who know that you do good, that’s what the Cavell Awards are there for… celebrating outstanding nursing!”
Going the extra mile
Professor Patrick Callaghan, Head of the School of Health Sciences, said: “The School of Health Sciences is renowned for the quality of its teaching and learning, and the contribution of its students in its endeavours. Robert, Natasha and Nicola’s achievements in the Cavell Awards is a testament to their efforts in going the extra mile, their enterprising spirit and their passion for, and commitment to, nursing excellence. The school is immensely proud of them.”
Assistant Professor Stacy Johnson, of the School of Health Sciences, was present on one of this year’s judging panel – a further honour for the school. She commented: “I was impressed by the calibre of all of the candidates nationally. It was a pleasure to read about all the things that student nurses are doing. Based on the entries I have great confidence in the future of nursing.”
Nicola Fisher has also been shortlisted for a Student Nursing Times Award, in the category for ‘Outstanding Contribution to Student Affairs’. Winners will be announced on Thursday 7 May at the London Hilton on Park Lane.

Professional Development are piloting a lunchtime workshop, in collaboration with the International Office and the Confucius Institute, for staff and postgraduates who want to know more about how Chinese names are constructed and pronounced.
If you are interested in simply saying the names of your students or colleagues correctly, or want to improve the way you work with Chinese students, then this is a good first step. As well as expert explanations of how to understand and say Chinese names, there will be some discussion about the range of educational backgrounds our Chinese students come from and their general cultural background.
Lunch and refreshments will be provided, and you can book through the central short course programme.

Wednesday afternoons are already synonymous with sport for many students but Wednesday 25 March 2015 will be remembered as a big day for University of Nottingham Sport for many years to come.
The culmination of the British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS) season, BUCS Big Wednesday saw four University teams claim national championship victories in hockey, table tennis and fencing. The men’s lacrosse team also came within a whisker of claiming the Championship Cup against Durham, a team that hasn’t tasted defeat for five consecutive years.
Held at Loughborough University, Big Wednesday not only demonstrated the strength of East Midlands sport but proved to be a story of local rivalry with the men’s hockey team coming up against the host university and both the men’s and women’s table tennis teams facing off against Nottingham Trent University.
Golden anniversary
The history books show that the 1964/65 season was the last time the men’s hockey team claimed the National Championship and it took penalty flicks to separate the two teams this year after a hard fought 1-1 draw in normal time. A Nottingham team featuring 2012 Team GB Olympian Harry Martin held their nerve in front a crowd of over 1,000 spectators to defeat the Loughborough men’s first team and bring the national title back to UoN after a fifty year wait.
Men’s Hockey captain Andy Dalman said: “I can’t begin to describe how much this means to us. Every fitness test and off-season sacrifice over the last three years has been in anticipation of this game. Every late night video session and every early morning run – the hard work has definitely paid off.”
The European adventure starts here
The men’s and women’s table tennis teams served up another couple of victories for the University, securing their places in the European University Table Tennis Championships in the process.
Both titles came within minutes of each other, as the women’s team of Yolanda King and Tressa Armitage produced an amazing display to beat NTU 3-0, with Yolanda winning 3 games to 2 in the final match against England number 5 and Ladies National bronze medallist Emma Vickers.
Shortly after this the men’s team of Paul McCreery, Liam McTiernon, Ben Gardner and James Grayson were celebrating a 9-5 win over a three-time gold medal winning NTU side led by England number 5 Chris Doran.
Exeter’s hopes of victory foiled
The women’s fencing first team put in an outstanding performance to defeat The University of Exeter 117-80 in the Trophy Cup competition and preserve their unbeaten record for the 2014/15 season. The team will be looking to continue that form as they look ahead to their league playoff against The University of Manchester on 22 April, where they will be looking to gain promotion to the BUCS premier league.
Dominant Durham show their class
The final event of the day saw the men’s lacrosse team square off against the team that had already denied them premier league victory this season. This was the third meeting for these two teams this year, and with Durham victors on both occasions they were arguably favourites going into the final.
Despite leading 8-7 at the end of the third quarter, the Nottingham team were unable to provide the cup upset and eventually succumbed to an 8-11 defeat.
