Malaysia Campus 15th anniversary – this week’s highlights

August 14th, 2015

To celebrate our 15-year anniversary as the first UK university to establish an overseas campus in Malaysia, we’ve asked staff and students who’ve spent time there for their memories.

This week’s highlights:

  • Newly-wed couple, and University of Nottingham alumni, Ashley and Keith Hobson, share their love story, which was sparked through a mutual love of Malaysia.
  • The University of Nottingham in Malaysia featured heavily in David Cameron’s UKTI trade delegation to Malaysia and Singapore at the end of July
  • Nottingham University Business School (NUBS) MBA student has Malaysia on his mind after Southeast Asia international business study tour. Here he writes about the companies and cultural spots he visited in Kuala Lumpur
  • More facts and milestones about Malaysia Campus’ early days, as we celebrate its 15th anniversary, are remembered on Twitter

If you have a story to tell on your experiences at UNMC, please contact emma.lowry@nottingham.ac.uk, and you will be put into a prize draw for travel vouchers worth £200.

University of Nottingham Malaysia joins No. 10 and BIS trade delegation to Southeast Asia

August 11th, 2015

The University of Nottingham featured heavily in education and trade discussions during the UK Prime Minister’s visit to Singapore and Malaysia last week.

Four members of The University of Nottingham Malaysia Campus (UNMC) joined the UKTI (UK Trade and Investment) Northern Powerhouse delegation in Kuala Lumpur on Thursday 30 July.

Provost and CEO of UNMC, Professor Christine Ennew; Professor of Global Food Security and CEO of Crops for the Future Research Centre, Sayed Azam-Ali and Claire O’Malley, Dean for the Faculty of Science flew the flag for Nottingham and UNMC.

They were present alongside Secretary of State for Business, Innovation and Skills, Sajid Javid; Minister of State for the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, Hugo Swire; Lord Francis Maude, Minister of State for Trade and Investment, as well as MP for Broxtowe and Minister for Small Business, Anna Soubry.

Activity involving UNMC included:

  • Professor Ennew spoke as part of a high-level roundtable on UK/Malaysia science and innovation co-operation with Secretary of State for Business, Innovation and Skills Rt. Hon. Sajid Javid MP and Chaired by the British High Commissioner to Malaysia, Her Excellency Vicki Treadell.
  • CEO of Innovate UK, Dr Ruth McKernan visited the brand new £26m Crops for the Future headquarters based at UNMC, to discuss plans for the grand opening of the iconic ‘Domes’ due to take place in September and be marked by a major international symposium on Global Food Security, featuring world leaders, Nobel laureates and senior Government officials from both UK and Malaysia.
  • Secretary of State for Business, Innovation and Skills Rt. Hon. Sajid Javid MP, launched “Year of British Education in Malaysia” at an Education is GREAT reception at the British Council in Kuala Lumpur. UNMC quite literally provided the backdrop to this significant announcement (pictured above) – which follows the announcement of the Malaysian Government’s Education Blueprint earlier this year.
  • Professor Ennew was interviewed by Times Higher Education last week to talk about the 15th Anniversary of UNMC and the future of branch campuses.
  • UKTI announced that UNMC has secured a major new scholarships deal via its partners Aerospace Malaysia Innovation Centre (AMIC) and Majlis Rakyat (MARA). They are to sponsor 60 students, over the next five years, to undertake aerospace research in the Asia Aerospace City Research & Technology Centre.

In another move to strengthen UK/Malaysian ties, Malaysian think tank Asian Strategy and Leadership Institute (ASLI) has just announced that it is to present a lifetime achievement award to the University of Nottingham’s Vice-Chancellor, Professor Sir David Greenaway.

The prestigious award is to be conferred by the Deputy PM of Malaysia, Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and the President of Indonesia, Joko Widodo. The ceremony will be held in the UK in November.

Rambling Dad raising money for the Nystagmus Network

August 10th, 2015

On Saturday 29 August, the University’s own Dominic Holder, Student Administration Manager, will walk around Highfields Park Lake for 12 hours to raise money for the Nystagmus Network, a charity that deals with support and research into the incurable eye condition Nystagmus.

Far from a ‘walk in the park’, the challenge will see Dominic walking solo around the lake non-stop from 7am to 7pm, with friends and family joining him for some of the stretch in support. Called ‘Rambling Dad’, money raised on the walk will go towards providing information, support and advice as well as funding and encouraging research around Nystagmus.

Dominic said: “My 10-year-old son has this condition and has benefitted greatly from this fantastic charity. I would like to raise some money to allow others to continue to have their lives enhanced.”

You can support Dominic’s Rambling Dad walk through his Just Giving page, and can also visit his Facebook group for more background to his story and updates.

Impact: The Nottingham Campaign raises £150 million

August 10th, 2015

We are delighted to announce that thanks to the generosity of thousands of supporters – including hundreds of staff and students – we have reached our ambitious target of raising £150 million in charitable donations through Impact: The Nottingham Campaign.

These funds have supported students through scholarships, Cascade grants and by enabling exciting new developments across campus such as the new David Ross Sports Village, GSK Carbon Neutral Laboratory and New Theatre. It has made life-saving research at the Children’s Brain Tumour Research Centre possible and is offering hope to millions by supporting ground-breaking advancements in detecting cancer early.

We will be officially celebrating reaching this milestone in October with all those who have been part of this incredible campaign so far. However it is clear to see that the projects and research made possible through Impact are just as important today as they were when we launched the campaign 5 years ago. Students still face barriers in coming to University and diseases like cancer and dementia are major global health issues. This is why we are extending our fundraising target to £200 million and creating exciting new ways for people to give their time to help students fulfil their potential and support world-changing research here at the University.

More updates and highlights from all that we have achieved so far will be available from October. In the meantime, if you have any questions about the Campaign or our planned celebrations please contact us at impactcampaign@nottingham.ac.uk

Organisation design model update

August 7th, 2015

A message from Professor Karen Cox, Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Project Transform sponsor

Following on from the Vice Chancellor’s and my recent communication announcing a new organisation design model for the University, I wanted to update you on the latest developments.

We have now seconded senior administrative colleagues from across the institution to work part-time on the detailed design of the new model, and to develop the job roles, management structures and guidance required to put it in place. Service Centres will be in place by September 2016 to support our students throughout their student journey. The seconded colleagues are:

  • Dr Carol Bell, School Manager, Geography
  • Dr Karen Braithwaite, Director of Academic Support & Administration, Veterinary Medicine & Science
  • Chris Hulse, School Manager, Medicine
  • Katie Laverty, Head of Student Service Delivery, Student Operations & Support (seconded full-time)
  • Alex Slater, Head of Faculty Teaching & Learning Support & Development, Engineering

A series of workshops is being organised to allow staff in Schools, Faculties, and Professional Services to inform the working group’s recommendations to Programme Board, along with comments gathered at previous workshops, and from the recent Academic Staff Survey.

APM job roles in the new model will be defined for approval at October’s Programme Board meeting. Once the detailed design and roles get Board approval, we will share plans for appointing to them with individuals, School and Department managers.

APM job roles not connected to the student journey — and therefore not in the scope of Project Transform — are being examined by a separate steering group. Faculty Pro-Vice Chancellors and a number of Directors of Professional Services are involved in taking this work forward. Further updates on this work will be available in September.

All roles connected to the student journey will be managed by the new Chief Student Management Officer, Breda Walls. Breda will take up her post at the University on Monday 24 August to oversee the transition to the new model. A press release announcing this externally will be distributed next week.

I want to thank colleagues across the University — particularly in APM roles —for their hard work and support so far. Our success as an institution with a global reputation for excellent teaching and outstanding research would not be possible without you. These new roles and structures, combined with the new technology platform being developed by Project Transform, will allow us to improve the experience of every student at The University of Nottingham, and give APM staff more opportunities for personal and professional development.

I will be in touch in September following Programme Board. If you want more information on the organisation design elements of the project, please contact the representatives above, or Adrian Simpson, the Organisation Design Lead in Project Transform.

Karen Cox
Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Project Transform sponsor

Children’s Brain Tumour Research: new internal funding programme

August 5th, 2015

A new competitive internal awards programme to support scientific and clinical brain tumour research projects at the University has been established thanks to a significant grant made by The Stoneygate Trust.

The Stoneygate Children’s Brain Tumour Research Fund incorporates two grant schemes: the Career Catalyst Awards and the Proof of Concept Awards.

A first call for proposals for both schemes has been issued, with applications invited by Wednesday 30 September 2015 to support projects led by researchers in any part of the University which aim to deliver a significant advance in the study of children’s brain cancer. This can be in any research discipline, and the Fund has a particular interest in supporting interdisciplinary work which takes an integrative approach towards understanding the causes, treatment and outcomes of childhood brain tumours.

All submissions will be peer-reviewed by an assessment panel comprising senior University academic staff and including esteemed external representation.

Detail on both schemes, along with application forms and contact details for queries, is available on The Stoneygate Fund webpage.
