The University of Nottingham has been shortlisted in four categories for the Times Higher Education Awards 2015.
Four University departments will be hoping to emulate the success of the research team led by Professor Harminder Dua, awarded the ‘Research Project of the Year’ at the 2014 awards for work identifying a previously undetected layer of the cornea (above).
The categories are:
Outstanding Employer Engagement Initiative – Careers and Employability Service
Along with Faculty of Engineering colleagues, the Engineering Careers team developed and hosted and event aimed at providing a wide ranging insight into the rail sector. With speakers from leading rail companies the event resulted in a 40% increase in recruitment to the rail sector.
Entrepreneurial University of the Year – Business Engagement and Innovation Services
One of four University Enterprise Zones (UEZs) across England, the University boasts a number of initiatives that place enterprise, entrepreneurship and innovation at the heart of the organisation. The University is recognised for stimulating an environment that supports entrepreneurial behaviours in staff and students through The University of Nottingham Innovation Park (UNIP) and the creation of numerous Centres for Doctoral Training (CDTs). The nature of entrepreneurial activity is measured through the impact of programmes such as The Haydn Green Institute for Entrepreneurship and Innovation (HGIEI), student run societies and competitions, the Ingenuity business network and the Asia Business Centre.
Outstanding Support for Early Career Researchers – The Graduate School
Nottingham’s innovative postgraduate placement project has supported over 200 research students to undertake and gain valuable work experience in local SMEs. Researchers have worked with over 100 local employers who have seen and reaped the benefits and skills that doctoral researchers bring to enhance their workforce.
Outstanding Contribution to Leadership Development – Research and Graduate Services
The Nottingham Research Leaders Programme (RLP) has the core aim of identifying and supporting key academics in their strategic research leadership roles, in order that they are better placed to deliver excellent research with impact, in pursuance of the objectives of University’s Strategic Plan.
John Gill, THE editor, said: “The achievements of our universities, which transform students’ lives and carry out pioneering research day in, day out, deserve to be recognised, and over the last decade the Times Higher Education Awards have become one of the sector’s most hotly anticipated events. This year, the 11th year of the awards, we had more entries than ever before, and are delighted to have such strong shortlists, highlighting the strength of universities the length and breadth of the country.”
Widely regarded as the Oscars of the higher education sector, the Times Higher awards attract hundreds of nominations for outstanding institutions, departments and individuals across 18 categories covering the full range of university activity. The full shortlist for all 18 categories is available on the awards website: www.the-awards.co.uk
The winners will be revealed at a gala awards evening at the Grosvenor House Hotel in London on Thursday 26 November 2015.

To celebrate our 15-year anniversary as the first UK university to establish an overseas campus in Malaysia, we’ve asked staff and students who’ve spent time there for their memories.
This week’s highlights:
Tea-drinking, footy and punk music are familiar British cultural references….but did you know they are also woven into the fabric of Malaysian society? Find out more in the first of three blog posts exploring some of the long-standing, and sometimes surprising, connections between Britain and Malaysia.
If you ever pondered how many trees are on Semenyih campus, the answer is 2242! Fourth-year engineering student, Pei Sze Teh spent the entire summer counting trees at UNMC for an internship to map the current flora and fauna. Her research will support plans to eventually replace the aging oil palm trees at the former plantation, restoring more indigenous biodiversity. Read about her experiences in the latest Sustainable Nottingham blog post.
More facts and milestones about the campus’ early days, as we celebrate its 15th anniversary, are published on Twitter.
If you have a story to tell on your experiences at UNMC, please contact emma.lowry@nottingham.ac.uk, and you will be put into a prize draw for travel vouchers worth £200.

The University is currently creating a new online portal for prospective students to use during their application process. We would like to meet with University students and test the system to ensure that it is intuitive and simple to use. We especially want to ensure that it is accessible for disabled users.
This testing will take place between Monday 7 and Wednesday 16 September, and participants will need to be able to make their way to King’s Meadow Campus (served by the 902 hopper bus). No previous experience of software testing is required. The sessions will involve:
Students will receive a £10 Amazon voucher for an hour’s testing of the system. If you are interested in participating, please enter your details into the online registration form.

The University’s Women’s Staff Network has been recognised as an Awesome Network by Inclusive Networks.
Inclusive Networks are a hub to celebrate diversity and inclusion, and have published this list of Awesome Networks to celebrate the positive impact of network groups across all sectors in the UK.
Laura Higgins, Chair of the Women’s Staff Network, said: “We are thrilled to be recognized as an Awesome Network in the Inclusive Networks 2015 list.
“The University of Nottingham Women’s Staff Network has been running for a number of years now with ever increasing membership. The network is run by women for women and acts as a confidential forum for debate and networking in both formal and informal settings. We aim to promote a sense of community and commonality among female staff members of all levels and hope to further grow the network in the next year to build on successes we have already seen and to continue to benefit women at The University.”
Guaranteeing equal prospects
Catherine Bird, member of the network and Administrator in the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, added: “The Women’s Staff Network is about guaranteeing women are not unethically disadvantaged and have equal prospects, while providing the change to build new connections and mutually beneficial relationships.”
The Women’s Staff Network was launched in 2009 and is supported by the University’s Staff Equality and Diversity Advisory Group, to which they formally report general issues of interest or concern and also, where appropriate, Human Resources. Staff networks are an important part of the way the University works. They do two important things: advocate for change where it’s needed; and provide a supportive forum for their members to share issues and experiences. The expertise of the networks contributes to projects, action plans and training for staff, and they provide a safe space for individuals while also pushing strategy onwards with senior colleagues.
Earlier this year, the UoN Disability Network, supporting staff and students, was also named as an Awesome Network in Inclusive Networks’ inaugural list of 40 Awesome Networks.
Vision for the future
The University’s vision for the next five years includes a strong commitment to support diversity and equality in its core values. Read Global Strategy 2020 for more information about the University’s principles and plans for the future.
Find out more about the University’s staff networks on our website. You can also visit the Inclusive Networks website for a full list of Awesome Networks.

Nottingham’s two new tram lines will open from 6am on Tuesday 25 August, which will serve University Park, Queen’s Medical Centre, Beeston and more.
Line Two will run from Nottingham city centre to Clifton, while Line Three will pass through University Park Campus, directly linking University Park to Nottingham city centre.
New tram stops are in place along University Boulevard, at the South Entrance to University Park, and adjacent to the Highfields Sports Ground. Staff and students based at the Queen’s Medical Centre will also benefit, as the tram line will stop at the hospital. The tram line extends to Beeston, a notable student area, and finishes in Toton. There are also tram stops at a 10-minute walk from King’s Meadow Campus. Visit the NET website for a full list of stops.
Dr Paul Greatrix, Registrar, said: “We welcome the completion of Phase Two of the Nottingham tram network. Not only is it a fantastic addition to public transport within the city, but as a University it will enable us to be better-connected to the city centre, making travel to and from our campuses very easy for students, staff and visitors. It also supports our ongoing mission to reduce our carbon footprint, by providing staff and students with an alternative method of transport to cars.”
NET and Nottingham City Council announced the launch on Monday 24 August, which is the culmination of a three-year construction project costing £570 million. With the tram lines now completed, tram development works will no longer affect the University although some minor finishing works may take place. You can check our dedicated Works affecting our campuses page, which is regularly updated with activity affecting travel to and from our campuses.
You can plan your journey, find further information and more on the NET website. The University has teamed up with NET to offer staff 15% off annual tram passes through salary deduction – find out more.
You can also check the University’s tram webpage for information about how the new line will affect staff, students and visitors – we will be updating this page over the next few days with more information.

The Science Media Centre is inviting nutrition scientists to their next specialist Introduction to the News Media session on Thursday 17 September 2015.
The free event will be held 12.30-5pm (followed by drinks) at the Norwich Research Park at the University of East Anglia, and is specifically geared towards nutrition/diet/obesity/food science/metabolism scientists with little or no media experience.
Speakers include Lawrence McGinty (Former Science and Medical Editor for ITV News), Prof Susan Jebb (Professor of Diet and Population Health at University of Oxford), and Catherine Collins (Principal Dietitian at St George’s Hospital NHS Trust). More panellists will be confirmed closer to the time.
What is involved?
Science has never been as prominent in the news as it is today and it is paramount that the issues are communicated correctly. There are some excellent science journalists in the UK, but the news stories will never be covered as accurately as we want them to be without the direct involvement of the experts themselves.
This event is for 150 scientists and is divided into two sessions with a tea break, and includes a drinks reception at the end (lunch not provided). The event is completely free of charge.
Attendees will be given a beginner’s guide to the media and will hear from media-experienced scientists, news journalists, science correspondents and press officers about the realities of the news media. Topics include:
• how and why scientists and journalists should engage with each other
• top tips for dealing with the media
• how journalists find stories
• the role of the press office
• the role of the news editor
Register interest
