Want to get fit? Follow the University’s new outdoor Active Trail

September 18th, 2015

The University of Nottingham is inviting students, staff and local residents to work up a sweat by trying out its very latest outdoor Active Trail – which extends over one and half miles around its campus.

This latest investment in sport by the University is an innovative trail featuring five fitness stations which offer small group training facilities for people of all abilities in the beautiful setting of its University Park campus in Beeston.

Designed especially for outdoor training, the new trail offers a range of body weight training stations including Dip/Leg raises, pull up stations, arc traverses, and press and row stations – to name a few, allowing for upper body, lower body, core and full body workouts.

Free demonstrations

On Tuesday 22 September to mark the start of Welcome Week, sports teams and staff from the University will be on hand to give students and staff demonstrations on how to use the new trail.

A day of 30-minute training tutorials will also be offered to introduce users to fun, energetic workout sessions, starting on the hour between 10am and 4pm at fourth fitness station. Everybody will be invited to participate in some fun challenges on the equipment with the chance of winning some great prizes.

Samantha Bell-Minogue, Assistant Director of Sport (Participation), at the University, said: “The Active Trail enhances our offer for both students and staff providing them with access to free fitness equipment at a time that is convenient to them. We look forward to engaging with a wider population of our community and hope that it will encourage more people to become active in new and innovative ways in the outdoor environment across our exceptional green campus.”

First-class training facilities

In the absence of personal trainers, users of the Active Trail can refer to either placards on the stations that clearly outline proper use of the equipment, or they can use QR codes via their mobile phones to access tutorial videos online.

The Active Trail was installed by sports equipment company Life Fitness UK. Craig Cocking, UK Vertical Sector Manager, Life Fitness, explains: “As the popularity of outdoor fitness continues to grow, we’ve teamed up with The University of Nottingham to make more use of its green space so it benefits both students and staff as well as the wider community.

“The installation of SYNRGY BlueSky provides a fantastic alternative to indoor workouts and together with the University, we’re encouraging both students, staff and local people to take advantage of the first-class training facilities on their doorstep so they can enjoy a more active and healthier lifestyle.”

David Ross Sports Village

This latest investment by the University into its sporting facilities follows the start of construction earlier this year on its £40m new sports complex on University Park, called the David Ross Sports Village.

The new development, which is due for completion in summer 2016, will help to deliver the University’s ambition to increase participation in sport at all levels, from encouraging children to experience a range of new sporting pastimes, through to the enhancement of elite performance at a national and international level.

Nottingham soars in global university rankings

September 15th, 2015

The University of Nottingham has been ranked amongst the top universities in the world in the QS World University Rankings.

In the latest results, Nottingham has improved by seven places, up from 77th in 2014 to joint 70th in 2015, placing the University amongst the top 1% of global universities. Domestically, the University placed 14th out of just 75 UK universities included in the rankings.

The most recent rankings particularly emphasise Nottingham’s academic reputation and the international diversity of staff and students. The University also scored very highly in the assessment of its reputation amongst graduate employers, placing 45th in the world.

The University is consistently named as one of the most targeted institutions by leading graduate employers and was also named as the number one university in the UK for job prospects at the WhatUni Student Choice awards in April 2015.

Vice-Chancellor, Professor Sir David Greenaway said ‘The latest QS league table again emphasises the excellent value that this university offers its students as well as the global impact of our world-class researchers and staff.’

‘Our significant improvement in a leading and globally recognised ranking reflects the hard work of our talented students, dedication of our excellent staff and our continued investment in people, infrastructure and innovation to ensure the very best environment in which to study and work.’

The QS World University Rankings have been published since 2004, taking into account academic reputation, research impact, employer reputation, teaching commitment and international diversity. The twelfth edition of the rankings assessed over 120,000 survey responses and also established a new approach to measuring research impact.

In December 2014, the Research Excellence Framework ranked Nottingham eighth in the UK for research power, confirming the University’s place in the top tier of the world’s elite higher education institutions.  The QS World University Rankings further endorse this position with all five faculty areas ranked within the world top 125: Life Sciences and Medicine (=67th), Social Sciences & Management (=76th) and Arts and Humanities (=90th), Engineering& Technology (=116th), and Natural Sciences (=124th).

Project Strategy 2020 Organisation Design

September 10th, 2015

Project Transform is set to change the way the University is structured, with some administrative staff moving from central departments and schools and faculties into student service centres. The management structure and job roles required to run the service centres are currently being designed as part of Project Transform.

Administrative roles which remain in faculties, schools and some central departments will also be affected by the changes to the systems and structures which Transform will introduce. A new project — Project Strategy 2020 Organisation Design — is currently working to define how administrative roles outside the scope of Project Transform will be structured in faculties, schools and departments. This will ensure that academics and central services are fully supported during the transition to and following the launch of the new system.

The Project Strategy 2020 Organisation Design steering group, chaired by Deputy Vice-Chancellor Prof Karen Cox, is leading this work. Two sub groups, covering faculties and Professional Services, will develop proposals that will be presented at the UEB Away Day at the end of October.

For more information on the project, its scope, principles and next steps, read the project output report by Prof Cox.

So, I’m entering this#meanttobe #UoN thing!! Warning – this will sound very, very cheesy… but it’s honestly so true. My #meanttobe moment at the University of Nottingham: It was a Friday afternoon in February, we’d finished our lectures for the week and the three of us went for a walk around the campus, visited the beautiful millennium gardens, the lake and Highfields park, where we’d wanted to go for ages ☺ I just remember laying on the big swing in the park staring at the blue sky and feeling like everything worked out, and we were all so happy. I was with two of my amazing friends who I’d met here, I was finally doing the course I’d always wanted to do and I was at the loveliest, most beautiful place having the best time. So anyway yeah. That was really it. #bestdayever #universityofnottingham #meanttobe #tb #welovetheswings #sorryforthespam☀

#MeantToBe I came to Nottingham on a summer school and instantly fell in love..it was a difficult decision but I chose to go to uni somewhere else. After a year I knew that wasn’t the right place for me.. I’m so glad I started again in Nottingham, I’ve had absolutely no regrets, met the best people who will be friends for life and I really wouldn’t have it any other way. #UoN#BestUniEver
