On Wednesday 11 May Deputy Vice-Chancellor and project sponsor Karen Cox announced the decision to phase the implementation of the new system.
Work on the new Student Service Centres remains on track and these are due to open in August. However, as the new IT system progressed through testing, a number of issues emerged, which need to be rectified to ensure that the system functions as planned. Therefore the implementation of the IT system will be phased while these issues are resolved.
This means that different elements of the system will come online at practical points throughout 2016 and 2017. This applies to the UK, China and Malaysia. The decision is a result of discussions between Project Transform Programme Board, University Executive Board and Audit and Risk Committee.
Find more information on the Project Transform blog.

In the middle of planning her wedding to fiancé Tim, Dr Sally Chappell was diagnosed with breast cancer. Talk of dresses and honeymoons turned to doctors and chemotherapy but, with the support of her family, she has completed her treatment and is now back to the job of arranging the wedding.
Now the mum-of-one who is also Nottingham’s official Maid Marian, is asking others to help support Life Cycle 6, the University’s annual fundraiser, led by the Vice-Chancellor, which this year is hoping to raise £1 million for breast cancer research at the University.
Dr Chappell, 38, of Beeston, was diagnosed with stage four breast cancer in July 2015. She had noticed changes in her breasts which had prompted her to go to her local GP. As soon as she begin tests to diagnose the cause she said she feared it was cancer. But Dr Chappell, who works as a lecturer and researcher in Human Molecular Genetics at the School of Life Sciences at The University of Nottingham, received a double blow when specialists confirmed that it was cancer and it had also spread to her bones and liver.
She started radiotherapy at the end of last year and has now completed the course although is still on medication. Incredibly she continued to work during her treatment and, despite her hair loss, she continued appearances alongside her fiancé Tim Pollard who is the City’s official Robin Hood. She said: “I was very lucky that I tolerated chemotherapy quite well, so I could continue to go to work. Carrying on with work took my mind off everything. I have always been quite determined (some people may say stubborn). Life is for living and when things get in the way, you’ve got to jump over the barriers. I was Nottingham’s official Maid Marian before I lost my hair. Now I just do it in a wig.”
Dr Chappell said: “There is such a great academic and clinical community in Nottingham. They have the big ideas they just need to money to make a difference. As a researcher I’d thought about research from a patient’s view before, but it’s interesting to now have that dual perspective and personal experience. It’s quite reassuring that I know scientists are thinking of the patient at the end of it. Researchers have the patient’s best interests at heart. From a personal perspective, it would be nice to know that breast cancer isn’t a death sentence. I think that a realistic goal would be to treat it so that it doesn’t get any worse, even at the late stage that mine is at. I think that would be good; to stop it spreading further.”
Life Cycle 6 includes a team of University staff undertaking a gruelling 1,400 mile endurance bike ride this August to the four corners of Britain to help raise funds for breast cancer research. As well as sponsoring the endurance cyclists and taking part in the community bike ride, the University is encouraging people to hold their own fundraising events such as bake sales, dress down days, sky dives and charity discos. A list of ideas and more information features on the Life Cycle website.
Dr Chappell will also be attending Meet the Researchers – a free event on Saturday 21 May to give people a behind the scenes look at world leading research into breast cancer. The public are welcome to turn up to Queen’s Medical Centre on the day but to secure a view of the laboratories, please register by Friday 20 May 2016. The Meet the Researchers event is part of the Research and Innovation Showcase 2016 – a series of events and exhibitions organised by Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust, The University of Nottingham and Nottingham Trent University, that showcase the life-changing world-class medical research taking place in Nottingham.

The competitive internal awards programme to support scientific and clinical brain tumour research projects at the University is now open. The fund has been established thanks to a significant grant made by The Stoneygate Trust.
The Stoneygate Children’s Brain Tumour Research Fund incorporates two grant schemes: the Career Catalyst Awards and the Proof of Concept Awards.
A first call for proposals for both schemes has been issued, with applications invited by Monday 15 August 2016 to support projects led by researchers in any part of the University which aim to deliver a significant advance in the study of children’s brain cancer. This can be in any research discipline, and the Fund has a particular interest in supporting interdisciplinary work which takes an integrative approach towards understanding the causes, treatment and outcomes of childhood brain tumours.
All submissions will be peer-reviewed by an assessment panel comprising senior University academic staff and esteemed external representation.
Detail on both schemes, along with application forms and contact details for queries, is available on The Stoneygate Fund webpage.

The University of Nottingham’s new-look research website has now gone live.
This is the first step in a fresh approach to raising the profile and enhancing the reputation of our world-class research. By developing and improving our research marketing and communications, we aim to increase the visibility of our research to our key stakeholders, and further establish the University’s international reputation as a centre of research excellence.
At www.nottingham.ac.uk/research you can find out about the University’s five Global Research Themes (GRTs) and 31 Research Priority Areas (RPAs), the impact of our research, and our many research collaborations. Our people and their research stories are key to this new approach. To find out which researcher wanted to be a fighter pilot or who’s the University’s gene jockey, visit our inspiring people section.
The research website will be continually developed and updated, with new content created by a dedicated team in External Relations working closely with colleagues from across the University. A new visual identity based on a pentagon to reflect the five Global Research Themes has been developed, while the strapline world-class research shapes the messaging and focus on research excellence.
Assets and collateral are being developed to support the GRTs and RPAs. Impactful new photography showcases our researchers in their working environments – visit the Image Bank and search under ‘Research 2016’ to see the hundreds of images uploaded so far. All are available to colleagues from across the institution.
A research campaign will follow to actively promote our research strengths to raise both the profile and reputation of the University’s research to our key stakeholders. We will highlight our focus on today’s key challenges while also reflecting the breadth and depth of our research.
Many thanks to those who have supported us in the delivery of the new research website, especially your time and efforts in the development of content and collateral.
We look forward to working with you as we continue to develop our research communications and enhance our promotional activities in the coming months. For more information on any of the above or to get involved contact victoria.bell@nottingham.ac.uk or robert.ounsworth@nottingham.ac.uk
