Do you know the date of the EU referendum?

May 31st, 2016

Message from Professor Sir David Greenaway, Vice-Chancellor and Angharad Smith, President of the Students’ Union

The date of the referendum on whether the UK should remain a member of the European Union or leave is set for Thursday 23 June. The outcome of the vote will have profound implications for the future of our country. While it is both the Students’ Union and University’s position to maintain a neutral stance on the referendum, it is vital that both organisations encourage you to exercise your democratic right to vote and register.

A new poll conducted by YouthSight for Universities UK has revealed that over half of UK university students do not know when the referendum on the UK’s membership of the European Union is taking place, with that figure rising to 70% in the East Midlands. In addition to this, many of those who are registered to vote may well be registered at the wrong address, since the referendum, which is on 23 June 2016, falls outside of term time. You can be registered to vote at two different addresses. Students can be registered at their home and term time addresses. However, it is an offence to vote twice.

Millions of students in the UK could play a decisive role in this referendum debate. As students are spread all over the country, their voting power was diluted at the general election. That will not be the case in a binary stay/leave national referendum. If the stay and leave sides are as close as recent polls suggest, then the two million UK students could clearly affect the result one way or another.

The outcome of the EU referendum is important for students who will live through the future it creates.

Ways in which you can vote can be found online

In order to vote in person, you must be registered on the electoral role by Tuesday 7 June. Registration takes five minutes and can be completed on the Government’s website. You may need your National Insurance number to register.

To register by postal vote, you must complete a separate postal vote application form. The deadline to return this is:

  • Wednesday 8 June at 5pm – IF you are already registered on the electoral roll when completing the postal cote application
  • Wednesday 7 June at midnight – IF you are NOT already registered on the electoral role when completing the postal vote application form

Who is eligible to vote

You can vote in the referendum if you are registered to vote and are;

  • A British or Irish citizen living the UK
  • A Commonwealth citizen living in the UK who has to leave to remain in the UK or who has been registered to vote in the UK in the last 15 years
  • An Irish citizen living overseas who was born in Northern Ireland and who has been registered to vote in Northern Ireland in the last 15 years

The outcome of the EU referendum – whatever it may be – will affect you. You and your peers will have to live with the consequences for far longer than those who are making today’s policies. If you want to have a say on this important issue, you need to use your vote. You can register to vote online here.

May 30th, 2016

This is the second call for nominations to The University of Nottingham’s ESRC Impact Leaders Programme (ILP).

The programme successfully supported 13 partnerships in its first year and is based on learning from the University’s innovative and successful Research Leaders Programme. The Impact Leaders Programme aims to build and embed impact and knowledge exchange capacity across the social sciences through this structured leadership programme.

Each school is invited to nominate one academic or researcher, at any career stage, for participation. This opportunity is open to all schools across the University. Applicants can be working in any area of social science research and do not have to have received ESRC funding, however all activities must align with the ESRC’s definition of Social Sciences.

The 2016-17 programme will run for an academic year, from September 2016. Each academic participant will identify a partner from an external, non-academic organisation, who will participate in the programme at the same time. The time commitment required for the structured part of the programme will be no more than six days (academic participants) or four days (stakeholder participants) over the course of the year.

Halls Management celebrates Customer Service Excellence

May 26th, 2016

The University’s Halls Management Division, part of the Estates Operations and Facilities Directorate, has achieved the Customer Service Excellence standard.

The top accolade recognises the Halls Management Division’s commitment to delivering a student-focussed service in halls of residence and its culture of continuous improvement. It is the first department within the University to achieve the Customer Service Excellence standard.

Customer Service Excellence is a nationally recognised standard dedicated to bringing high-level service concepts into common practice. To achieve the standard, the Halls Management Division showed that they met a range of detailed criteria, including customer insight, the culture of the organisation, information and access, quality of service and delivery and timeliness.

The assessment concluded that the University’s Halls Management Division successfully achieved “compliance” against 53 elements and exceeded four elements of the criteria, scoring “compliance plus”.

Mick Lynch, assessor, said that “strong leadership continued to ensure that a cogent customer-focussed ethos always permeated through to all staff at University of Nottingham Halls Management Division”. He was “enormously impressed by the commitment, passion and energy shown by staff” and added that staff “appeared to be fully committed to putting the customer at the heart of everything they did”.

Achieving the standard isn’t the end of the process, and the division will continue to drive continuous improvement to benefit all students living in halls.

Dr Michael Clifford scoops Universitas 21 award

May 24th, 2016

Dr Michael Clifford, an associate professor in Engineering at The University of Nottingham, has been recognised by Universitas 21 for his long-term dedication to the furthering of international education.

The award for ‘Internationalisation’ recognises his impact and leadership in developing student learning both at home and in communities throughout the developing world.

In his field of mechanical engineering Dr Clifford has published more than 70 academic works, including teaching case studies on the use of appropriate technology in further education, whilst also integrating notions of sustainability and appropriate technology into the teaching of engineering at Nottingham to ensure students have a breadth of understanding of global challenges and their global responsibilities.

Professor Sir David Greenaway, Vice-Chancellor, said: “Mike’s contribution to internationalisation stems from the impact that he has had on students over a sustained period of time, both in terms of the challenges he sets in the classroom to ensure an understanding of the major challenges of technology, development and sustainability and the experience they have garnered working on projects that have had real impacts in the developing world. The activities that Mike has led have raised the awareness of the role that engineering and engineering students can play internationally in changing communities for the better.”
