The University of Nottingham and Nottingham City Council have marked the opening of a new ‘super’ hockey pitch with a trip down memory lane to celebrate the heritage of the University’s hockey clubs.
The £1.2m pitch, which has been funded by the University and built on land leased to the University by Nottingham City Council, was officially opened by GB Olympic Gold-medallist and Nottingham alumnus, Robert Clift (hockey, Seoul 1988).
The first game to mark the opening was a battle of experience vs youth, when current Nottingham students took on University alumni.
The University boasts particularly impressive stats when it comes to hockey with both its men’s and women’s teams competing in the top tier of University sport in the country (BUCS – British Universities and Colleges Sport).
Famous hockey alumni
In 2015 the men won the BUCS Championship for the first time in 50 years whilst being coached by current GB player David Ames. Famous hockey alumni include Harry Martin, Nick Catlin and George Pinner, who are part of the current GB Hockey Squad and are pushing for selection for the 2016 Rio Olympics. However the list of alumni runs far deeper and includes John Land who was selected for GB at the 1964 Olympics, as well as players such as Simon Hazlitt, Rob Moore and Anne Panter.
Current players include Mo Ghandi, current US Senior Team member and GB U21 player, James Gall.
Dan Tilley, Director of Sport at The University said: “The University of Nottingham Sport has a great sporting history, especially in hockey, and the University is investing not only in the club but also the sport, with the aspiration to be successful both at University and National level in hockey. We were delighted to welcome players old and new to celebrate the opening of this fantastic facility and hope that it will inspire other students to choose Nottingham as their place of study.”
‘A superb facility’
One of the former players in attendance on the day was Gordon Clark, 86, the oldest known member of the University Hockey Club who graduated in 1952.
Gordon said: “This weekend was such a great excuse to come back to The University of Nottingham, it holds such a special place in my heart. The Varsity game on Friday was fantastic and it was great to see Nottingham winning again. It was much better organised than in my day where we just used to get together once a week or so to train!
“The new pitch is a superb facility and it’s amazing to see so many people here to play on it and I’m very much looking forward to celebrating the Hockey club at tonight’s alumni dinner, reminiscing about the songs we used to sing and good times we’ve all had playing hockey at the University.”
The new facility is a full sized water-based pitch, built to the highest specification, including international standard floodlighting. The pitch augments the splendid facilities at Nottingham Hockey Centre, and establishes it as the leading hockey centre in the country in terms of quality and range of facilities.
Investment in sport
The pitch will be used primarily by the University hockey clubs as well as the wider community.
This is one of a number of investments into the University’s sports provision. Later this year its new £40m sports village will open on University Park campus.
Portfolio Holder for Leisure and Culture, Councillor Dave Trimble said: “The new hockey pitch is going to be a tremendous addition to Nottingham’s sports, leisure and parks facilities and will reinforce Nottingham’s reputation as a city of sport. I’m proud to have been involved in the development of this imaginative scheme to create first class sports facilities in the heart of the city.
“This £1.2m development is further proof that Nottingham is a city which can attract major funding but also demonstrates how sustainable and realistic business models contribute to the aims of Nottingham City Council to provide first class facilities cost effectively for the people of Nottingham.”

Pint of Science, the international science festival, makes its debut in Nottingham from Monday 23 to Wednesday 25 May.
The festival will see thousands of scientists simultaneously standing up and talking about their research in over 100 cities across 12 countries around the world, including the UK, Brazil, Canada & South Africa. Founded only four years ago by two UK researchers, the festival today brings a unique line up of talks, demonstrations and live experiments to each city’s favourite pubs and bars.
More than 30 University of Nottingham researchers can be caught speaking at various pubs across the city, including Canal House, Spanky Van Dyke’s and Lace Market favourites, Rough Trade and Missoula. For Nottingham, run by STEM (science, technology engineering & maths) Outreach Nottingham, attendees will enjoy a variety of exciting talks including: ‘Black holes in the bathtub’ with Dr Silke Weinfurtner, ‘Can the world change computer games’ with Prof Steve Benford, and ‘Chemistry in space’ with Dr June McCombie.
Alongside the main talks, each evening will also include a range of fun, science-related activities including insect eating, molecule making, live experiments, science comedy, fun quizzes, geeky puzzles, engaging stories and other interactive activities.
Professor Neil Crout, Head of the School of Biosciences at The University of Nottingham, said: “Science is so so important to our modern world but all too often understanding science is out of reach for the vast majority of us, so it is really exciting to see the Pint of Science Festival making its Nottingham debut. Nottingham is home to truly remarkable and world-leading science and it’s great to see some of that science coming out for a night on the town.”
“The STEM Outreach Nottingham team are always working on ways to make science a bigger part of Nottingham’s already packed cultural calendar, and bringing the Pint of Science festival to the city gives us the perfect opportunity to do just that.’ says Nottingham Co-ordinator and University of Nottingham PhD student, Matt Young. ‘As one of only six, government-recognised Science Cities in the UK, Nottingham has a strong history and huge involvement in science and innovation that people want to be able to connect with on a more approachable level.”
Find out about each event and buy tickets from the Pint of Science website, with each evening costing only £4. You can also find Pint of Science on Twitter and Facebook.

As we come toward the end of term, we are promoting our waste, recycling and charity collection scheme, set up in partnership with Nottingham City Council.
The campaign includes British Heart Foundation charity donation bins, a drop-off point for food parcel donations and a ‘Horse and Dray’ coming to the streets of Lenton on 9th June 2016, collecting your reusable items directly from your doorstep!
Our aim is to ensure that moving out at the end of term is stress free, leaves our communities clean and provides invaluable support to local and national charities.
British Heart Foundation banks
From the end of May British Heart Foundation banks can be found on your way to university in the following locations:
– Canning Circus Car Park
– Ilkeston Road/Midland Road (adjacent to Nottingham 1 development)
– Corner of Garden Street and Ilkeston Road
– Footpath adjacent to Lenton Lodge, Derby Road
– Corner of Willoughby Street/Park Road (by Tesco Express)
– Outside Dunkirk Community Centre
You can donate a range of items, anything that can be sold in a BHF shop such as clothing, shoes, handbags, DVDs, CDs, small electricals and books. Click here for a list of things that can’t be accepted.
Food Bank donations
If you have any non-perishable food items left at the end of term, these can be put to excellent use by Tommy’s, who will redistribute food to people in need in the local community, helping to fight food poverty.
Please drop off any non-perishable food items to Tommy’s c/o Thomas Helwys Baptist Church, Church Street, Lenton, Nottingham, NG7 1SJ, Monday-Friday 9:30am to 3:30pm
Horse and Dray
On 9th June, we will be taking to the streets of Lenton. An old-fashioned horse and dray with coachmen will be leading the way as Nottingham City Council collect any reusable items. We will email students on the streets we are visiting to let you know when we will be in the area and what you need to do.
Disposal of general household waste
Remember that as a tenant, it is your responsibility to remove all rubbish from your property and front/back gardens before you leave. Rubbish left on the pavement for collection outside of the collection window could result in a Community Protection Warning Notice from Nottingham City Council. Likewise, landlords may be able to deduct money from any deposit given for rubbish left in the property or gardens.
We’ve put together a few tips to help you:
Plan ahead!
Check your bin day and make sure your waste is disposed of on that date. Waste should be presented after 4pm the day before collection; and bins should be removed as soon as possible following collection.
Got extra household waste?
Present any extra waste neatly and securely in bin bags on your green bin collection day only. If you don’t know your bin day, please click here.
Recycle
Recycle as many items as you can to help reduce waste. Please put items into your recycling bin individually and not in plastic bags.
Bulky items
Book a FREE Bulky Waste Collection online or call 0115 915 2000. The teams will remove any large items of household waste such as mattresses, wardrobes or fridges. You have to be on the electoral register to use this service.
For further information on how to manage your household waste, visit the Nottingham City Council website or call 0115 915 2000.

Nottingham’s links to China have been strengthened with a tribute to one of its most famous writers.
Barbara Woodward CMG OBE, HM Ambassador to the People’s Republic of China, visited The University of Nottingham Ningbo Campus on Thursday (May 12 2016) where she officially opened the DH Lawrence Auditorium. The ambassador met with students and staff, including Provost Professor Chris Rudd, to find out more about life at the University which is home to 7,000 students studying for British degrees.
Upon officially naming the Auditorium with a lecture open to members of the public, students and staff, she talked about her memories of The University of Nottingham Ningbo being established and said she had followed it with interest.
She said: “The University of Nottingham Ningbo China is the first university anywhere in the world to establish a joint campus in China. Nottingham’s One Bridge approach sees talent, ideas, opportunities and creativity flow between Nottingham and Ningbo. The burgeoning relationship between these two cities will be of great benefit to the new Midlands Engine for Growth. Our flourishing UK-China government relationship provides an important foundation. Building on this, students and universities provide an exchange of ideas, culture and creativity that is at the heart of the new ‘Golden Era’ of UK-China relations.”
Professor Sir David Greenaway, Vice-Chancellor of The University of Nottingham, said: “We are delighted the University is able to welcome the Ambassador to mark the extraordinary progress our pioneering campus in Ningbo has made in forging relationships with China over the last decade. Nottingham is perfectly-placed to take advantage of what President Xi Jinping has called ‘a new Golden Era for UK-China relations’, with the University providing a bridge between Ningbo and Nottingham – with talent, ideas and creative exchange flowing across in both directions. The naming of the DH Lawrence Auditorium is a fantastic opportunity to celebrate the City’s most famous literary figure, Nottingham’s accolade in being designated a UNESCO City of Literature and the enduring power of culture and heritage to transcend national borders.”
The new technologically sophisticated Auditorium, which can seat 1,000 people, will provide more teaching and learning space for students at the campus. It is named after Lawrence who was a miner’s son from Eastwood, Nottingham, but went on to become one of the biggest writers of the 20th century. His most famous works include Lady Chatterley’s Lover, Sons and Lovers and The Rainbow. Lawrence was a student at the former Nottingham University College, which later became The University of Nottingham, between 1906 and 1908.

The University of Nottingham has announced a ground-breaking research collaboration with the University of Birmingham.
The establishment of the £10m Centre of Membrane Proteins and Receptors (COMPARE) is the result of a year-long competitive process, and marks the fifth anniversary of the strategic partnership between the two universities.
COMPARE will unite leading researchers from Nottingham and Birmingham, equipping them with some of the most advanced imaging technologies in the world in the quest to develop more effective drugs with fewer side effects. The focus will be on treating two of the major killers of mankind, cardiovascular disease and cancer.
COMPARE capitalises on Nottingham and Birmingham’s collective strengths in life sciences and will be one of the leading centres in UK for the delivery of pioneering and translational research. As well as delivering globally important scientific discoveries, COMPARE will develop the next generation of researchers with the skills to exploit new imaging techniques and facilities.
The Centre will be co-directed by Professor Stephen Hill, Professor of Molecular Pharmacology in the School of Life Sciences at The University of Nottingham, and Professor Steve Watson, British Heart Foundation Professor in Cardiovascular Sciences and Cellular Pharmacology in the Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences at The University of Birmingham.
This unique and exciting approach to collaboration cements the Nottingham/Birmingham partnership as arguably the most significant bilateral collaborative university partnership in the UK.

Following an incident at the Highfields Park Boating Lake on Monday 9 May, we would like to remind all students that it is prohibited to swim in the lake under any circumstances.
Colwick Park Lifeguards operate the lake and have warned that entering the water poses a serious danger to individuals due to the lake’s levels of silt, the water temperature and the risk posed to swimmers by other objects deposited in the lake.

The way that the University deals with student administration will begin changing from August this year. From Admissions through Registration, Module Enrolment, Examinations and Graduation, the people, processes and the systems we rely on to carry out these tasks will start to transition to a new way of working.
The University has organised a number of events to give staff the opportunity to find out how student administration will operate from September 2016. These events are open to all staff and will run from Monday 16 May through to Friday 27 May. There will be a presentation and colleagues will have the opportunity to ask questions about how these changes will affect both staff and students.
The programme of events can be found below. Each event is expected to run for one hour and no sign-up is required – just turn up to an event of your preference.
This will be a valuable opportunity for all staff to find out more about the upcoming changes to student administration, and colleagues are encouraged to attend an event of their choice.
