The University of Nottingham is creating a new Office of Global Engagement that will build upon the University’s worldwide reputation for excellence in internationalisation, and enable Nottingham to remain at the forefront of global higher education and research. It will draw on skills and expertise from the International Office, the Asia Business Centre, the regional APVCs and global public policy.
Reporting to the Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Global Engagement, Professor Nick Miles OBE, the new Office will provide strategic direction, support and co-ordination to help the University maximise opportunities across the full spectrum of its global engagement activity. The primary function of the Office will be to lead on, and support the development of strategic international collaborations; multi-dimensional partnerships combining research, teaching, knowledge exchange and student mobility. The Office will identify and promote new opportunities for staff and students to develop their international experience and exposure.
John Quirk, the current Director of the International Office, will oversee the formation of the Office ensuring delivery of the refreshed global engagement strategy.
With the creation of the Office of Global Engagement, overall responsibility for international student recruitment will transfer to the External Relations Department, led by Kerry Law, Chief Marketing and Communications Officer. This will bring into one place all student recruitment and admissions activity, creating a one-stop-shop to enhance the support that can be provided to Faculties and Schools in the delivery of ambitious student number targets in the current globally competitive environment.
The launch of the new Office of Global Engagement aligns with changes to the External Relations Department. External Relations will now have four divisions: Communications and Advocacy, Digital and Marketing, Student Recruitment and Nottingham Lakeside Arts. Three new posts will be appointed to strengthen the leadership team, including a Director of Communications and Advocacy who will have a dotted reporting line into the PVC Global Engagement.
Professor Nick Miles said: “The new Office of Global Engagement will transform our ability to project the University of Nottingham on the world stage. Working together with colleagues from across the institution including in Malaysia and China, it will allow us to build the University’s reputation and relationships in ways that will provide real tangible benefits to staff, students and to the institution as a whole.”
The Office of Global Engagement will start work on Saturday 1 April 2017. Transitional arrangements are being put in place to ensure delivery of the full range of international marketing and recruitment activity that is already planned for the remainder of this academic year.
For more information on the Office of Global Engagement please contact John Quirk on ext 15243 or by email on john.quirk@nottingham.ac.uk. For information on the changes in External Relations please contact Kerry Law at kerry.law@nottingham.ac.uk.

If you’re transgender we’d like to hear about your experiences at The University of Nottingham please via a short, 12-question survey.
If you’re not trans but you think you have relevant information that you want to share with us you can anonymously fill in the free text boxes on the form. Please try to be frank, whether positive or negative!
Why are we asking?
– To give you a chance to give feedback, in case there are areas that we urgently need to improve;
– To let us know whether there are particular barriers that affect trans students;
– To give us a baseline from which we can judge our performance as an institution, and a rough idea of how many trans students are studying here.
This survey has been created by the Trans Working Party and the Department of Sport. Survey results will be reported in aggregate and anonymised so it won’t be possible to identify individuals and your individual survey responses will then be deleted. Only current students at The University of Nottingham should complete the survey please. The survey closes on 7 April.
The survey can be accessed via this webpage.

A world-exclusive dinosaur exhibition is coming to Nottingham this summer. The ‘Dinosaurs of China’ exhibition will bring specimens never before seen outside of China, to the UK. The exhibition focuses on the evolution of feathered dinosaurs into birds.
Wollaton Hall will host the main exhibition, but there will also be a second free satellite exhibition at Nottingham Lakeside Arts, based here at the University. Lakeside wants to create a dino-legacy for Nottingham, and this is where we need your help.
We are hoping to raise £4000 to create an animatronic baby dinosaur which we can use to teach children all about dinosaurs. If we are lucky enough to raise a more than this, we plan to install a dinosaur dig in Highfields Park, where children can experience what it’s like to become a palaeontologist and uncover dinosaur bones!
There are lots of rewards on offer on the Dinosaurs of China Crowdfunder webpage, starting from just £5 for a Tweet out, to £20 for a special dinosaur poster, £40 for a ‘Family Stroytelling Session’, £50 for a VIP ticket and, if you want to treat your children to a very special birthday party there’s even a Dinosaur themed package available. Any amount donated will be gratefully received and used to create a unique dinosaur legacy for Nottingham, based at Nottingham Lakeside Arts.
For more information, please take a look at the video on the Dinosaurs of China Crowdfunder webpage.

The University has devised a long-term strategy for the enhancement of the current stock of existing trees across the University Park Campus. The long-term goal is to establish an Arboretum resource of regional and national value for the benefit of both students and visitors to the campus.
The University has a well established reputation for creating attractive campuses. The recent investment in both Jubilee and Sutton Bonington campuses along with the recent additions of the Trent Parterre overlooking the Highfields Park lake, the new Theatre Gardens and the forthcoming Portland Hill cascades project continues to reflect their ongoing investment in landscape and green infrastructure across their estate. The University has now developed a strategy for the enhancement of their extensive tree collection that defines much of the University Park Campus.
Trees have always been an integral part of the landscape across the University Park Campus. It has benefited from planned tree planting that dates back to its origins in the 12th Century as the Lenton Priory estate and in the 19th century tree planting for the then private villas found across the site. This rich heritage comes with a great responsibility to manage, maintain and enhance the campus and the plans demonstrate our commitment to further enhance the campus by establishing an arboretum resource of regional and national value for the benefit of both students, staff and visitors to the campus.
The first phase of our planned works will see the removal of a number of mature trees in poor health or at the end of their natural lifespan around the north west of the campus and along the edge of Beeston Lane. By doing this it will provide the opportunity for the planting of new trees to extend their longevity of the remaining trees and introduce new collection of trees. The removal of approximately 50 trees will be matched by the replacement planting of around 80 large specimen trees. These have been selected to offer seasonal and visual interest to users of the campus and will include an avenue of Lime trees to mark the Universities 21 AGM and Annual Presidential Meeting to be hosted by the University in May 2017. Other trees include Redwoods, Persian Ironwoods and less common species such as the Japanese Zelkova tree with its attractive smooth grey bark naturally flaking to reveal beautiful orange patches.

Message from Professor Karen Cox, Deputy Vice-Chancellor
Following the Vice-Chancellor’s email a few weeks ago, I would like to invite you to attend a Global Strategy 2020 Roadshow to find out more about the work that is going on to review and refresh our university strategy and to talk with you about how we get your input.
As you will be aware Global Strategy 2020 outlines our ambition to be an inspiring place of learning and scholarship that transforms lives. We are continually striving to ensure excellence in our teaching and learning, to deliver world-class research, enhance our reputation, and to develop our global connections. It is only by working together as a University community that we are able to achieve our vision and goals.
I’m keen to share with you our progress so far, and to update you on some of the work that is taking place this year – as a direct result of Global Strategy 2020.
The roadshow programme will include an introduction from the Vice-Chancellor, a short presentation highlighting some of the key projects and initiatives underway and an update from me on our strategy review and refresh work and how to feed in to this. Members of UEB will be available at the roadshows for any questions related to their area.
Dates, times and locations
Each roadshow is expected to last for one hour. Booking is not required. For those unable to attend there is an online consultation space – you’ll need to be logged in to Workspace to access this. Here you can review the roadshow content – which includes a recent Beyond 2020 presentation and green paper for Senate, and comment and input on plans and strategy.
I very much hope you can join us at one of the roadshows, and I look forward to seeing you there.
Professor Karen Cox
Deputy Vice-Chancellor
