Article 50 – thoughts from the Vice-Chancellor

March 13th, 2017

As you will have seen in the news recently, the government is preparing to trigger Article 50 of the Lisbon Treaty – the formal two-year mechanism by which we will leave the EU.

What does that mean for us, as a university? What does it mean for our staff and students, for our international partnerships, for our role as a global institution?

It goes without saying that our relationship with Europe will change in the months and years after Article 50 is triggered. Some of those changes are yet to be determined.

But equally, there is much that has not changed.

Our University remains a global institution with an international outlook, an excellent reputation and significant ambition for the future. Our international community of students and staff remain at the very heart of the University. With students from more than 150 countries, we have a global alumni community that has been built up over many decades. With campuses in three countries and extensive experience of working with international partners we are in a strong position to deal with new challenges.

We have already done a great deal of work to prepare for our new relationship with the EU, to put support in place for colleagues who may be affected by changes and ensure we secure the best possible outcome for The University of Nottingham and UK higher education more broadly.

The VC‘s blog about Article 50, the impact of Brexit and next steps for the University can be read in full here.

To read an open letter on Article 50 from the UK’s top universities, visit the Russell Group website.

Charges introduced for Medilink bus

March 10th, 2017

From Monday 13 March, staff and students will need to pay to use the Medilink bus.

The Medilink is a council-funded hopper bus service that runs between Queen’s Medical Centre and City Hospital. From Monday 13 March non-NUH staff members will need to pay to use the service. The charge will be £1 per journey if booked in advance using pre-paid Robin Hood tickets or £1.20 if paying in cash.

This charge has been introduced in order to maintain the service, which has been at risk due to council budgets.

More information about this new charge can be found on the Nottingham City Council website. If you have any queries about the new charge or the Medilink service, you can contact the Council here.

Nottingham shortlisted for two Guardian University Awards

March 10th, 2017

A project to build creative talent in China and a teaching internship programme for vets have seen the University shortlisted in the International Projects and Employability Initiative categories respectively.

The Guardian’s International projects category has put the spotlight on work carried out by the University’s Asia Business Centre and its International Creative Economy Leadership Academy.

The academy is the first of its kind to offer a regional international knowledge exchange network and hub that delivers training, trade and investment support, policy and industry networks, hot-desking space, and research development opportunities. It has combined two strands of activity – one around the screen industry, building on the work of the Nottingham Screen Partnership, and one around museum management.

The University of Nottingham Vet School has been shortlisted for the Employability Initiative category.

After identifying a lack of teaching-qualified vets to train the next generation, and enthusiasm from vet students to broaden their skill set, the Teaching Internship Programme was set up. The programme is aimed at enhancing the employability of graduates by allowing them to combine a teaching qualification during their veterinary degree. One of the first teaching interns has already secured a teaching post upon completion of the course.

Dr Paul Greatrix, Registrar at The University of Nottingham, said: “This is really positive news and testament to the hard work of colleagues across the University. Both these examples show the University pioneering solutions to problems – both locally and globally – and I’m delighted they have been recognised in this way.”

Visit the Newsroom for more information about the projects. The full set of nominations for the awards can be found on The Guardian website.

2018 undergraduate prospectus now available

March 10th, 2017

The 2018 undergraduate prospectus is now widely available for use and is the first piece of collateral to showcase the new University brand and global student recruitment campaign.

All aspects of the prospectus, including navigation, content, messaging, and design were robustly tested with focus groups in top feeder schools, with these opinions informing the direction of the publication to ensure we were providing prospective students with the information they wanted, as well as a campaign they could identify with. We have made the following improvements to tie in with the new campaign:

  • An embossed die cut cover opening onto a bold collage of images to showcase all aspects of university life
  • Bold and confident language to tie in with wider brand messaging, using active and succinct words to engage and excite
  • A newly designed introduction section to highlight key facts and the wider University wraparound offer
  • New aerial images of our UK campuses and increased coverage of campus information

You can download the PDF online.

The global student recruitment campaign has a three-year span and is designed to be flexible to work across the UK, China and Malaysia, undergraduate and postgraduate recruitment.

The aim of the campaign is to develop high-end, dynamic, multi-purpose and market-appropriate content to make us stand out in a changing HE landscape. Design, messaging, photography and video will evolve to be more authentic and tell our students’ stories, and the student recruitment marketing team are in the process of rolling out the campaign more widely across both hard copy materials and online platforms, including collateral for forthcoming open days and display advertising. Prospective students are starting to engage with the campaign at UCAS Higher Education conventions across the country, in the form of the printed prospectus, exhibition materials and a branded virtual reality cube, where the Nottingham experience is brought to life.

You can view the first of our UoN Student Stories videos here.

Jumpstart – the new way to crowdfund projects

March 9th, 2017

The Impact fundraising campaign has created a bespoke crowdfunding platform for The University of Nottingham with creators starting projects which are funded by sponsors, with rewards offered for their pledges.

Jumpstart helps members of the University to find the funding they need to explore their interests and enhance our community through creative, innovative projects; and it enables alumni and friends of the University to combine a number of gifts to support a project that particularly appeals to them.

Projects can be about anything – so long as there is clear benefit to University of Nottingham students. Projects will be judged on their goals, their creative or innovative merits, and the level of organisation and commitment demonstrated by you or your team. You will also need to demonstrate that you have a good network you can publicise your fundraising to.

Every project must achieve its minimum target by the funding deadline or no funds change hands. Why? Because if a Creator promises to complete a project that needs at least £2,000 it would be tough for them to do it if they only raise half their minimum. Part of the appeal of Jumpstart is that Sponsors get to engage with projects and see where their money is going. This keeps everyone happy!

One such example is the charity initiative Liter (Litre) of Light crowdfunding page coordinated by the Nigerian Students Society, which aims to make sustainable solar lighting accessible to impoverished regions of Nigeria. Using water-filled recyclable plastic bottles which are fashioned into a solar bulb, these units can be installed in the roofs of simple dwellings typical in poor regions of Africa.

The Liter of Light Nigeria team are seeking to raise the minimum sponsorship amount of £1,000 in order to head to Makoko, a slum community in Lagos, to install 600 solar lights in the community as well as teach the locals how to produce these solar lights with materials that can be sourced in Nigeria. If they are successful, this will help to unlock further funds from the Cascade Grants Programme.

To find out more about this project, visit the Liter of Light page. You can also view other projects to support on the Jumpstart website as well as taking in hints and tips for making your campaign a success on Jumpstart’s Learn page.
