Important changes to the Intranet Portal

March 21st, 2017

Starting this month, Information Services (IS) will be making changes to the Intranet Portal (https://portal.nottingham.ac.uk).

The Portal was developed a number of years ago to provide a central repository of information for staff and students but, over time, use of the Portal has waned as services and content have been moved to more dynamic channels. The technology that underpins the Portal is no longer supportable and these changes will ensure that core information for staff and students remains accessible, reliable and supported.

For more information about these changes, see the IT Network blog.

New library service provides access to more books

March 20th, 2017

Libraries, Research and Learning Resources (LRLR) have launched the new More Books service to provide students with enhanced access to books.

The new service comes in response to student feedback, including that collected from the National Student Survey (NSS). It offers students a quick and easy route to suggest books that our libraries do not already have, to ask for more copies of existing books, or to request an Interlibrary Loan.

More Books speeds up the process of purchasing books and also enables students to track the progress of their request within their library account.

This service is also available for staff to use. However, staff should use the online reading lists to request teaching material, as libraries already purchase core resources from these lists.

Find out more about the More Books service.

Join our Robin Hood Half Marathon team

March 20th, 2017

Life Cycle 7 is looking for runners of all abilities to join our Robin Hood Half Marathon team.

On Sunday 24 September the University is aiming to support a team of 500 runners of staff, students, alumni and friends as they run the Robin Hood Mini, Half and Full Marathons. This event will be part of our fundraising for the Children’s Brain Tumour Research Centre (CBTRC) under Life Cycle 7. We are looking for runners of all abilities and we are especially keen to encourage people who have never run a half marathon before.

Kevin Shakesheff, Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Science, is championing the half-marathon across the University and sees it as a great community event for our University. “Every year the Robin Hood event runs through the University campuses and other places well known to our staff, students and alumni. About 10,000 people run in the race each year and the support from spectators as you run through the Park, Lenton, Jubilee Campus and Wollaton Park is wonderful. I know a lot of staff, students, alumni and our friends and families are keen to support the Centre for Children’s Brain Tumour Research Centre and it would be great to have hundreds of us wearing the official Life Cycle 7 running shirt and raising money for such an important cause.”

The Life Cycle 7 team and the David Ross Sports Village team will be setting up training events from now until the race as we look to create one of the University’s largest teams.

If you are interested in learning more about how you can join the team or volunteer to support the fundraising activities please email kevin.shakesheff@nottingham.ac.uk.

Information on the Children’s Brain Tumour Research Centre and the wonderful work they are doing can be found on the Impact Campaign website.

[Updated] Portland landscaping commences

March 17th, 2017

Update: Portland landscaping works have now commenced.

The first phase of the landscaping involved the removal of a number of cherry trees. These trees have been identified as in terminal decline for a number of years with evidence of considerable basal decay and signs of significant crown dieback. They have been removed to make way for 34 new trees, which will be planted as part of the overall landscaping works. Local contractor J Tomlinson have been contracted to carry out this work. Find out more about the University’s long-term strategy for the enhancement of our existing trees across campus.

Portland landscaping works are due to commence on Monday 27 March. The whole of Portland Hill (the grassy area facing the big screen at the back of the Portland Building) will be closed from this date as site fencing is erected and the works begin taking place.

This marks the beginning of phase three of the Portland Building redevelopment. Portland Hill will be closed from Monday 27 March until the start of the 2017/2018 academic year while the works take place.

The Portland Building, Portland Hill road and Cherry Tree Hill will not be affected by the works and will remain open. Staff and students will still be able to access the Portland Building through the entrance beneath the big screen.

Supported by funds from The University of Nottingham’s Impact Campaign, the landscaping works include the introduction of a new hardstanding pavilion by the bus stop with tiered stairs leading down to the Portland Building that will act as amphitheatre-style seating. There will also be cascading water features and the area will be used as a screening venue for events such as outdoor cinema nights, big sports events or graduation.

UoN student strikes bronze at STEM for BRITAIN competition

March 15th, 2017

Harriet Parnell, 24, a PhD student at the University of Nottingham struck bronze at a competition in the House of Commons for the excellence of her engineering research, walking away with a £1,000 prize.

Harriet presented her engineering research to dozens of politicians and a panel of expert judges as part of the poster competition, STEM for BRITAIN, on Monday 13 March.

Her research, which focuses on a mid-infrared transparent glass which could help diagnose earlier stage cancer, was judged against 59 other shortlisted researchers’ work and came out as one of three winners.

Harriet said: “Considering the pool of talent that was in the engineering session at STEM for BRITAIN 2017, I feel incredibly humbled to have been awarded third prize. The day exceeded all expectations and I cannot thank the organisers, judges and sponsors enough for their efforts.”

Alongside Harriet, doctoral student Sean Jones also represented The University of Nottingham at the scientific competition and exhibition. Sean presented a poster on his world-class research into Smart Controlled Energy Networks Integrated in Communities, also known as Project SCENIC which is the first research project of its kind in the world and is based at University Park campus.

Professor Dame Ann Dowling OM DBE FREng FRS, President of the Royal Academy of Engineering, said:

“I’m delighted to see all the superb engineering research on display at STEM for BRITAIN this year.  From medical technology to transport systems of the future, the showcase provides a glimpse of the world-leading research taking place in universities up and down the UK.  The talented engineers bringing their work to Parliament demonstrates just how varied the world of engineering is and the many ways in which it impacts our society.”

  • A fundraising collector: this role will help to spread the message about the ground-breaking work happening in our Children’s Brain Tumour Research Centre.
  • A community feedback volunteer: you’ll get to meet people from all different backgrounds in this role as you uncover ways that we can improve Wonder in future years.

We’re looking for people who are:
