Appointment of President and Vice-Chancellor

May 22nd, 2017

The University of Nottingham is pleased to announce that Professor Shearer West has been appointed as its next President and Vice-Chancellor.

Professor West will take up office in October 2017 following the retirement of the incumbent Vice-Chancellor Professor Sir David Greenaway.

She will be the seventh Vice-Chancellor in the University’s history and the first woman in the role.

Professor West is Professor of Art History and currently Provost and Deputy Vice-Chancellor at the University of Sheffield.

She has held a number of significant leadership roles in higher education. Prior to her post at Sheffield, she was Head of the Humanities Division at the University of Oxford. She has also worked as Director of Research at the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC), as Head of the School of Historical Studies at the University of Birmingham and undertook a number of leadership roles at Leicester University.

While at the AHRC, she was appointed the first ever non-scientist chair of the Research Group of RCUK — which comprised science and research directors of all seven constituent research councils.

She has authored and edited nine books and many articles and is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts, the Higher Education Academy and the Royal Historical Society. She has held two visiting Fellowships at Yale University.

She also has a number of international roles of responsibility, most recently acting as main panel chair for the national research assessment exercise for Humanities in Norway and serving on the steering group to introduce impact into the Excellence in Research (ERA) exercise in Australia. She also represented the UK on the Science Europe Humanities Scientific Committee, and has been a jurist for the Spinoza Prize in the Netherlands and the Odysseus and Solvay prizes in Belgium, as well as an Advisory Board member for the Social Sciences Faculty of the University of Vienna.

In her role Professor West will work closely with the University of Nottingham’s leadership teams in the UK as well as at its overseas campuses in China and Malaysia.

President of Council John Mills said: “Professor West becomes our Vice-Chancellor at the start of a period of investment in both our research and academic community to build on the strong foundations in our campus infrastructure and international development which sets us apart from other UK Universities.

“Nottingham has the ability to transform lives through its world-class teaching and research and with increasing collaboration with other leading institutions. David has been a remarkable Vice-Chancellor and Shearer’s energy, drive and commitment to a collaborative spirit reflects the culture of our University and will build on his legacy.”

Professor West added: “I am honoured to be appointed to the role of Vice-Chancellor at The University of Nottingham and looking forward to leading this great University. I am a sincere admirer of the wonderful work which Nottingham has undertaken across its faculties in the UK and overseas. It will be a privilege to work with a highly-regarded international community of scholars and students, and I look forward to taking up this role at a time of both challenge and opportunity for universities.”

Olympic greats inducted into new Nottingham Hall of Fame

May 19th, 2017

Two of Nottingham’s most famous sporting alumni have been inducted into the University’s brand new sporting Hall of Fame.

The two alumni are:

Dr Deng Yaping
Widely regarded as the world’s greatest ever table tennis player and voted Chinese athlete of the 20th century, Deng Yaping’s achievements include winning four Olympic golds and numerous World titles during an eight period of domination in international women’s table tennis from 1991.

She said: “I’m very honoured and happy to be part of the Hall of Fame – this University has given me so much and I love this campus and the people here. I’d like to thank Sir David for the opportunities the University gave me and to be able to come back this time. ”

Dr Tim Brabants
Double Olympic medallist Tim Brabants made history by winning Team GB’s first ever canoeing medal when he achieved gold during the K1 1000m at the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games. He graduated the University of Nottingham with a degree in Medicine in 2002 and even won his first medal whilst still studying at the University.

He commented: “It’s a massive honour to be inducted into the Hall of Fame alongside Deng Yaping, she’s quite something – an Olympic legend. The University were a great support to me during my time at Nottingham; they encouraged me to excel in my sport and to complete my degree by allowing me the time I needed to train and study.”

The two inductions to the Hall of Fame took place during this week’s Sporting Excellence Awards ceremony, which was hosted by University of Nottingham Sport following the official opening of the new £40 million David Ross Sports Village.

The ceremony saw guests, alumni and the current cohort of elite student athletes join together to celebrate the University’s past and present sporting achievements.

Alongside the two alumni presentations, the ceremony also celebrated achievements of current student athletes and recognised individuals and teams who had excelled during the 2016/17 season: awardees included triple British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS) table tennis champion Haoyu Liu, who is currently studying at Nottingham as the first Deng Yaping sports scholar.

The slither of tiny feet – rare ‘lefty’ snails produce offspring

May 18th, 2017

Two rare ‘lefty’ snails brought together following a public appeal by a scientist at the University of Nottingham have produced their first offspring.

More than 170 baby snails have hatched, just six months after the story of Jeremy the garden snail and his search for a similarly left-coiling, or sinistral, companion hit international headlines.

Two potential mates were found for Jeremy following an appeal on BBC Radio 4’s Today programme by Dr Angus Davison from the University’s School of Life Sciences. Dr Davison wanted to breed from Jeremy to find out whether the genetics of these rare snails could offer insight into the body asymmetry in other animals, including humans.

But in a tragic twist, the original snail was left shell-shocked after being given the cold shoulder by both of his suitors — dubbed Lefty and Tomeu — who instead mated with each other.

The first batch of eggs to hatch were ‘fathered’ by Lefty and laid by Tomeu in April – snails are hermaphrodites so can fulfil the role of either mother or father.

The hatching was eagerly anticipated by Dr Davison, who was keen to find out whether the tiny gastropods would follow in the left-coiling footsteps of their parents. However as the new-borns developed it became apparent that every single one has the less rare form of right-coiling, or dextral, shells.

Dr Davison said: “Despite not yet being able to mate Jeremy, we have been able to answer the question of which direction the shells would coil in offspring from two of these rare left-coiling variants. Was it a chance event that made these snails develop as mirror images, or is it inherited?

“The fact that the babies developed right-coiling shells may be because the mother carries both the dominant and recessive versions of the genes that determine shell-coiling direction. Body asymmetry in snails is inherited in a similar way to bird shell colour – only the mother’s genes determine the direction of the twist of the shell, or the colour of a bird egg. It is far more likely that we will get to see left-coiling babies produced in the next generation or even the generation after that.”

Last year, Dr Davison and colleagues at universities in Edinburgh, Germany and the US, revealed they had discovered a gene that determines the direction in which a snail’s shell twists. The same gene also affects body asymmetry in other animals — including humans — and research using these snails could offer the chance to develop our understanding of how organs are placed in the body and why this process can sometimes go wrong when some or all of the major internal organs are reversed from their normal placement.

Two more batches of eggs — another laid by Tomeu and one laid by Lefty and fathered by Tomeu — will soon be hatching. Lefty has recently returned home but Dr Davison remains hopeful that Jeremy may still be encouraged to mate with Tomeu and that the resulting offspring from the combination of pairings may be mated. In the long term, these crosses may then be used to map and find the genes that determine variation in left-right asymmetry.

Provision for Disability Leave and Disability Related Sickness Absence

May 18th, 2017

The University is committed to ensuring reasonable measures are taken to remove any identified disadvantage for disabled employees and to support and retain disabled employees in employment.

It has now been confirmed that provision will be made for Disability Leave and Disability Related Sickness Absence, which will be included within the University’s current Sickness Absence Management Policy. This become effective from Saturday 1 April 2017.

Disability Leave
This new provision of leave enables a disabled person to be absent from work for ‘rehabilitation, assessment or treatment’ for a fixed period(s) of time known in advance. Colleagues intending to request Disability Leave should discuss this with their relevant manager and complete a Disability Leave form. The full details of this provision can be found in the revised Sickness Absence Management Policy.

Disability Related Sickness Absence
The University recognises that some disabled employees’ impairments may result in some sickness absence and we will be recording any disability-related sickness absence within HR systems via the sickness absence notification process. This will assist us in ensuring staff are not disadvantaged with respect to HR policies. Full information is contained within the revised Sickness Absence Management Policy. Employees can also update their status by completing an Equality Data Monitoring form.

This information will be treated and stored confidentiality as sensitive personal data.

If you have any queries, please contact Rebecca Dalton, HR Project Manager (extension 68539) or get in touch with the HR Employment Relations Team.

Olympic seal of approval for new David Ross Sports Village

May 18th, 2017

Alumni sports stars of the University of Nottingham have celebrated the official opening of the David Ross Sports Village.

The £40 million sports village is a state-of-the-art facility on University Park campus. It includes an indoor fencing salle, dance and spin studios, an all-glass squash court, an outdoor full-sized 3G rubber crumb pitch, tennis courts and gym.

It also boasts a brand new Sports Injury Clinic that can provide treatments such as hydrotherapy, acupuncture, specialist physiotherapy and sports massages, to staff, students, and the local community.

Olympic table tennis champion Dr Deng Yaping and gold medal-winning canoeists, Dr Tim Brabants MBE and Etienne Stott MBE, were among the line-up of sporting legends who joined fellow alumni David Ross and UK Sport CEO Liz Nicholl for the centre’s opening celebrations.

The Sports Village was made possible by a significant commitment from Nottingham alumnus and Carphone Warehouse founder David Ross, who studied law at the University.

Vice-Chancellor of the University of Nottingham Professor Sir David Greenaway said the centre was the fitting environment to engage students and staff, whatever their interests, and inspire the sports stars of the future:

“From David Ross’ generous donation, to the support of our Olympians, the scope and scale of alumni talent is clear. To be successful at anything takes drive, grit, determination and practice,” he commented.

“Our alumni have been showcasing these attributes for many years and I have followed their achievements with pride, knowing Nottingham may have laid the foundations for some of their successes. Today we celebrate a physical foundation, a complex of sporting facilities to be proud of and one which will inspire the next generation of athletes.”

You can see all the highlights of the opening ceremony on our latest YouTube video.
