The University of Nottingham is looking for volunteers to join this year’s graduation ceremonies as stewards, responsible for welcoming and helping attendees.
Stewarding represents an opportunity for staff and peers to see students celebrate the culmination of their studies. The type of activity volunteers may be asked to help with includes:
Around 30 stewards are needed for each of the 22 ceremonies taking place from Wednesday 12 July – Friday 21 July 2017. Volunteers can take part in one or multiple ceremonies, scheduled at different times.
Tea and coffee will be available throughout the day and lunch will be provided for volunteers who support graduation for a full day.
If you wish to help out at any of the events, please complete this online form (you will need to seek approval from your line manager first).
After you complete the form, the next step will be to attend a briefing session at 2pm Tuesday 11 July, at the David Ross Sports Village. If you’re unable to attend this briefing or for any other information, please contact br-gradstewards@nottingham.ac.uk.

The national threat level has returned to severe.
It had been elevated to critical for a short time following the terror incident in Manchester on 22 May.
Although a severe level means that an attack is highly likely, Nottinghamshire Police have stressed that there is no intelligence to suggest a current threat in the region.
This week the force has said there will be a phased return to business as usual with a visible policing presence remaining.
They have asked the public remain vigilant and report anything that causes concern. They stress the need for us all to remain alert but not alarmed.
An information film (Run, Hide, Tell) that provides advice on how to stay safe in the unlikely event you are caught up in an incident can be found on the Safety Office pages.
Any member of the University affected by incidents in Manchester can access support via the Services for Students pages.

The first Life Cycle training run for the Robin Hood races has taken place, as University of Nottingham fundraisers continue to prepare for the Mini, Half and Full Marathon challenges on Sunday 24th September.
So far 320 people have signed up to run in the races as part of the UoN 500 Lifecycle 7 team: the team consists of staff, students, alumni, family and friends all raising money for the Children’s Brain Tumour Research Centre.
All runners in the event will wear the Lifecycle 7 official running shirt and it should be a great community event for the University. The team features runners of all different abilities and the David Ross Sports Village is also helping with training courses for beginners and intermediate runners.
If you are interested in joining the UoN 500 Lifecycle 7 team — or volunteering to support the fundraising activities — please email kevin.shakesheff@nottingham.ac.uk. There is no limit on the number of people who can sign up as a runner and the team is especially keen to hear from alumni and current students.
You can find out more about the event on the UoN 500 team Facebook group.
The international campuses will also be taking part in races in Kuala Lumpur and Ningbo in October. The Kuala Lumpur race is the HSN21KM Night Race on 14 October and the 2017 Ningbo International Marathon is on 28 October.

A number of University of Nottingham schools have successfully applied for the latest round of awards under the Athena SWAN Charter.
The Athena SWAN Charter works to advance gender equality in all its forms in relation to:
in relation to their representation, as well as the progression of students into academia, the journey through career milestones and the staff working environment.
The following four University of Nottingham UK schools successfully submitted applications for awards in November 2016:
In the Faculty of Science:
In the Faculty of Social Sciences:
By gaining Athena SWAN awards, institutions such as the University of Nottingham are committing to a progressive charter and adopting a number of recognised principles within their policies, practices, action plans and culture.
In brief, a bronze award recognises an institution’s commitment to eliminating gender bias and developing an inclusive culture that values all staff. A silver award signifies that the institution has progressed and holds a significant record and achievement in promoting gender equality and addressing related challenges across different disciplines. A gold award recognises leadership in the area of gender equality. Visit our Athena SWAN webpage to read more about the charter principles and the University of Nottingham’s Athena SWAN programme.
Thanks are extended to all colleagues in the four named schools who contributed to this success, in particular the self-assessment teams for their work in coordinating and submitting the successful applications.
Speaking about the awards, Professor Marion Walker, It’s Associate Pro Vice Chancellor for Equality Diversity and Inclusion and Chair of the Gender Equality Nottingham (GEN) network, commented:
“I am delighted to hear of the recent Athena SWAN success for the Schools of Geography, Chemistry, Psychology and Computer Science. This outstanding recognition is testament to the hard work and transformative changes made over recent years by the schools. The importance and benefits of Athena SWAN are now being recognised throughout the University.
“The Athena SWAN charter was developed to challenge out of date thinking and to create a culture where everyone can thrive and progress their careers. These awards clearly demonstrate that the University of Nottingham champions this cultural change.
“Our next efforts need to continue to drive progress and ensure all Schools hold an Athena SWAN award. I look forward to working with everyone to achieve this.”

Following Monday’s incident in Manchester the national threat level has been raised to critical.
Although the move indicates that a further attack is imminent, Nottinghamshire Police have confirmed that there is no intelligence to suggest a current threat in the region.
They have asked the public remain vigilant and report anything that causes concern.
They stress the need for us all to remain alert but not alarmed.
Across Nottinghamshire, agencies regularly plan for major incidents to test procedures and ensure an effective response in the event of an emergency. There will be an additional policing presence over the next few weeks to reassure the public – not because of any specific threat.
An information film (Run, Hide, Tell) that provides advice on how to stay safe in the unlikely event you are caught up in an incident can be found on the Safety Office pages.

A University of Nottingham alumnus has been named as head of the World Health Organisation (WHO).
Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus will be the next director general of the UN agency after winning the most votes from 186 member states.
Dr Tedros, 52 and from Ethiopia, will be the first African in the post. He replaces Margaret Chan, who will step down from her 10-year post at the end of June.
Addressing the World Health Assembly shortly before the vote, Dr Tedros promised to respond to future emergencies “rapidly and effectively” and also promised to stand up for the rights of the poor.
He commented: “All roads should lead to universal health coverage. I will not rest until we have met this.”
Dr Tedros has also held roles as Ethiopian minister of health and foreign affairs and chairman of the board of the Global Fund to Fight Aids, TB and Malaria. He graduated from the University of Nottingham in 2000 with a PhD in community health.
Doug Thomson, Director of Campaign and Alumni Relations (CARO) at the University of Nottingham said: “The scope and scale of Nottingham alumni talent is truly vast – from Nobel prize winners, politicians and actresses, to Olympic gold medallists.
“Our global community of alumni continues to grow and make significant contributions in their chosen fields all over the world. It is inspirational for students and staff to think that Nottingham could have laid some of the foundations of such success.
“On behalf of the University of Nottingham I would like to congratulate Dr Tedros on his appointment and we look forward to following his career with interest.”
