Work begins on new Cripps Health Centre

June 8th, 2017

A ground-breaking ceremony at Cripps Health Centre marks the start of work to build one of the country’s largest wellness centres.

The new Cripps Health Centre will transform services for the healthcare needs of students and staff as well as those of the local community. It will offer a holistic approach to primary health and dental care, with enhanced clinical consulting rooms, minor operations suites, a patient observation bay, physiotherapy areas, dentist treatment rooms, a pharmacy and mental health suite, as well as training rooms and offices.

The new facility was made possible through a generous £9 million gift from the Cripps Foundation – the largest single gift donation from a private foundation in the University’s history. Members of the Cripps family joined Vice-Chancellor Professor Sir David Greenaway at University Park campus to mark the ground-breaking.

Robert Cripps, founding member of the Cripps Foundation, said: “We hope that this building will supply all of the requirements, not only for the student body, but the body that makes up the whole of the university and will provide the best of health support to everyone involved. It will be the best in this country just as the original one was when it was first built and it’s a delight to come back here.”

When it was built in 1969, the original Cripps Health Centre had 6,000 students and staff on its records. It now boasts a list of more than 41,000 patients – the biggest GP register in the UK.

Vice-Chancellor Professor Sir David Greenaway said: “This magnificent gift marks a new chapter in the history of gift-giving by the Cripps family. To have funded so many of our much-loved buildings is remarkable.

“Our University estate would not be the place we know it is today without their generosity and we are very grateful to them. The plans for the wellness centre will deliver an exemplar facility in terms of design, service provision and related research that will be unrivalled in the UK.”

Work is scheduled for completion in Autumn 2018 at which point the current health centre will be repurposed.

UoN’s 2018 QS World University Rankings revealed

June 8th, 2017

The University of Nottingham has been ranked amongst the top universities in the world in the QS World University Rankings.

In the 2018 results, Nottingham is placed joint 84th and among the top one per cent of global universities. Domestically, the University is listed 15th out of just 76 UK universities included in the table.

The most recent rankings particularly emphasise Nottingham’s employer reputation which is 69th in the world.

The University is consistently named as one of the most targeted institutions by leading graduate employers and was also named as University of the Year for Graduate Employment in the 2017 Times and The Sunday Times Good University Guide

The University’s academic reputation and international population also accounted for the strong positioning.

Dr Paul Greatrix, Registrar at the University of Nottingham said ‘The latest QS league table confirms our status as a world-leading, globally connected, university.

“Our employer reputation, ranked 69th in the world, alongside our academic reputation, demonstrates the full-rounded experience we provide for our students. We unlock potential and encourage students and staff to transform the world around them.

“Of course, there is always room for improvement. It is interesting to see that of the 76 UK universities included in the ranking 51 have seen a drop compared with last year’s rankings although many have recorded improved scores for Employer Reputation. We are confident Nottingham’s continued investment in teaching, research (through initiatives such as our Beacons of Excellence) and graduate employment will future-proof our world-leading reputation.”

The QS World University Rankings have been published since 2004, taking into account academic reputation, employer reputation, citations per faculty, student to faculty ratio, international faculty and international student numbers.

This year’s table provides insight into the world’s top 959 universities and uses the expert opinion of 75,015 academics and 40.455 employers. View Nottingham’s full report.

Alan Hazzledine, 1958 – 2017

June 7th, 2017

ARTICLE UPDATED TO INCLUDE FUNERAL INFORMATION

Tributes have been paid to a University of Nottingham colleague and friend, Alan “Hazzo” Hazzledine, who passed away at the end of May.

Descriptions of Alan include “a much-liked colleague, footballer, carer, friend and valued member of the University’s Security team”.

Alan’s funeral will take place at Bramcote Crematorium at 2pm on Thursday 15 June, followed by a reception at The Star Inn, Beeston. The family have asked for no flowers, and that mourners wear red, or Nottingham Forest shirts.

Steve Howdle, Professor of Chemistry at Nottingham, said:

“Really sad news: Hazzo died in a road traffic accident — riding his motorbike — I’m sure it was the way he would have liked to have gone. But he leaves behind a great gaping hole! Not only for his wife Lynn (Lynn Brown works in our Library Services) and family, his first wife Bev and their daughters and grandkids, but also for a very wide range of people across East Midlands, football, and at our University.

“Hazzo was a member of our security staff — he worked “in-cognito” not always in uniform but was vital to our campus safety. But how did I know him? Well in 1989 I was just finishing my PhD in chemistry at Nottingham and I rocked up at a training session for the Beeston Old Boys looking to join a good local football team. Hazzo and Paul Lambert came straight over to me welcomed me warmly to the club, but they also set me the challenge of impressing them and getting into their team. I did, and 28 years later I’m still playing with the team — though now we are all in the Veterans.

“But Hazzo had many talents — at the time he ran an impressive engineering firm making bespoke mechanical components and in a unique collision of our worlds, I ended up contracting his company to make some high pressure widgets to help me out with a new direction in my research — it was a spectacular success and my colleagues in the workshop in Chemistry loved him too.

“Hazzo then had a change of heart — he left his company and became a full time carer for the disabled and terminally ill — this was inspired by another mate of his who had unfortunately become very ill. I wrote a reference to the care home and I helped him get the job — and very kindly, they wrote back to me a few months later to thank me for ensuring that they employed a real gem!

“Some years later Hazzo decided he wanted a new career and joined our campus security team. I saw him on a regular basis and I know he loved that job — it also gave me a great chance to meet him regularly around campus and with always a warm handshake and a cheery “Ey-up”.

“So what about the football? Well Hazzo always pushed me — as a captain on the pitch he made me a better player. “Steve, just stand in the middle and be big” was one of his memorable tactical pep talks! He also set me a target: “I’ll be 40 this year – reckon you’ll still be playing?”. I took the challenge and I was. Then “I’ll be 50 this year…” … and I did (both of us were now in the Beeston Old Boys Veterans FC). Finally this year, we played just after his 59th birthday and he told me he’d be back next season — even if he just played one game — just to play when he was 60 — and he laid me down a challenge… Will I live up to it? I hope so — I certainly owe him to try!

“I’ll miss you my good friend — RIP Hazzo.”

Stuart Croy, Deputy Head of Security, said:

“Alan was one of those people who people are drawn to and already many people have been in touch saying how upset and sorry they are to hear the news and that Alan was such a lovely, happy, friendly gentleman.

“He was a work colleague and to many of us a close friend. I shared many interests with Alan and enjoyed his company both at work and out of work. I will remember with great affection the fun and laughter he brought to me and to others. I will miss his friendship, advice, support and the professionalism with which he approached his job as I am sure many of you will also do.

“I am sure that Alan will be in all of our thoughts and prayers in the days and weeks to come. It is important that we remember that Alan lived life and enjoyed it. If he were still here he would be saying enjoy yourself and love your family which is how he approached life.

“If you would like to chat about Alan, please remember that we have the Counselling service as well as the Chaplaincy. They have both been made aware of Alan’s passing as many staff both within Security and the wider University community have been affected by his passing: If you wish to talk to them please contact them directly.”

Launch of Technician Commitment

May 31st, 2017

The Vice-Chancellor of Nottingham has backed a national pledge to support technicians working in higher education.

Professor Sir David Greenaway is one of more 35 signatories pledging support for The Technician Commitment: a sector-wide initiative led by the Science Council, supported by the Gatsby Foundation to help address key challenges facing technical staff working in research.

Launched today, the commitment has identified five target areas, which universities and institutions will work to improve to safeguard vital technical skills. It will ensure greater visibility, recognition, career development and sustainability for technicians across all disciplines.

The commitment comes at a key time as the demand for technicians is increasing. More than 1.5 million technicians currently work in the UK, and that figure is expected to rise by around 70,000 each year.

Vice-Chancellors and Directors of Research Institutes from leading institutions across the UK have recognised the need to ensure sustainability by safeguarding technical skills across their organisations by utilising and developing expertise.

Belinda Phipps, CEO of the Science Council, said: “The Science Council has been working to increase the visibility and professional recognition of technicians and to improve their development opportunities at all career stages. We are delighted to be leading on the Technician Commitment and to be working with partners across the higher education and research sector to elevate the status and profile of technicians. By working collectively we can ensure the future prosperity of technical skills in higher education and research.”

Nigel Thomas, Executive Director, Gatsby Education, said: “We at Gatsby recognise the importance of technicians across industry, and are pleased to be supporting the implementation of the Technician Commitment. The number of founding signatories shows how valued technicians are to the research community, and we hope that the commitment will reassure technicians that their needs are being listened to by senior leaders.”

Earlier this month Neil Barnes, a senior technician in the School of Chemistry at the University of Nottingham received one of the highest accolades from the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC) — the President’s Award for outstanding contributions to the dissemination, advancement or applications of chemical science.

Neil was nominated, not only for his excellence as a research technician but his support of generations of physical chemists and his ‘extraordinary role’ in popularising chemistry via YouTube where he has attracted thousands of fans across the world.
