UoN backs Nottingham’s bid for European Capital of Culture 2023

August 16th, 2017

Nottingham has confirmed that it will be bidding to become the European Capital of Culture 2023. The announcement was made at a launch event held on Wednesday 16 August. The University of Nottingham is backing the city’s bid.

The European Capital of Culture (ECOC) is a city — or cities — designated by the European Union for a period of one calendar year. During this year the ECOC will host a series of cultural events. In 2023 both the UK and Hungary will host a European Capital of Culture.

The announcement took place at a luminarium created by local artists Architects of Air. Nottingham will be competing against Belfast, Dundee, Leeds and Milton Keynes but Nottingham’s European Capital of Culture 2023 bid team is confident of heavy support from across the Midlands. It is calling on locals to become Nottingham 2023 ‘Cultural Lions’.

Paul Russ, chairman of Nottingham’s Cultural Strategy Partnership and chair of the Nottingham 2023 board said: “As part of the bid, we want to give everyone in Nottingham the opportunity to take part in a project, production or experience and nurture the next generation of creative producers and cultural leaders.

“We’re proposing a ‘cultural change’ programme that will transform the lives of people in the Midlands; harnessing the power of creativity, stimulating innovation, attracting investment and creating new international networks that will redefine our relationship to Europe and the world.”

University of Nottingham Vice-Chancellor Professor Sir David Greenaway added: “Creativity and cultural vibrancy is an engine for growth, business and graduate retention and poses huge opportunities for our city, students and public.”

Nottingham’s bid forms part of the Nottingham Cultural Strategic Partnership’s 10-year cultural framework plan and will be developed by Festival and Events International.

Highlights of the University of Nottingham’s NSS 2017 Results

August 9th, 2017

The 2017 National Student Survey results were published on Wednesday 9 August.

Nottingham’s result for our students’ overall satisfaction with their course for 2017 is 86%,* which maintains our position of 9th in the Russell Group on this measure and which places us 39th among UK universities (excluding small and specialist institutions). This is compared to 35th nationally in 2016.

Following a major national review, the National Student Survey was substantially changed for 2017, and as a result Hefce have advised that it is not valid to compare question level responses from 2017 with those from 2016 or previous years. For more information about the changes, see the section below.

The new survey has produced a range of results, many of which the University community can rightfully be proud of, and others which we will continue our ongoing work to improve further still.

  • Of 56 subjects offered by the University, 22 subjects achieved 90% or above for overall satisfaction. At 90% were English, Accounting, Genetics, Architecture, and Finance; at 91% Sport Sciences and at 92% Biology, Social Work, and Classics; at 93% Chemistry, Civil Engineering, and History; at 94% Mathematics and Chemical & Environmental Engineering; at 96% were Law, Physics & Astronomy, Sociology, Zoology, and Food & Beverage Studies; at 97% Theology & Religious Studies and at 100% both Social Policy and Veterinary Science.
  • Subjects achieving their best ever results include Architecture, Civil Engineering, History, Law, Mathematical Sciences, Physics and Astronomy, Sociology and Social Policy, and Veterinary Medicine and Science.
  • In the new question areas, the University did particularly well compared with other Russell Group universities, ranking 2nd for questions about ‘The Learning Community‘ and 3rd for ‘Learning Opportunities‘.
  • Schools, Departments and Subjects which achieved highly, or improved their results in the light of the depressive effect of the new NSS deserve special commendation.

Further analysis of the data will be undertaken over the next few weeks to help inform  School, Faculty, and University actions that will help maintain and enhance  the  outstanding  education and student experience we encourage our students to expect and to which our staff are committed.

About the ‘New’ National Student Survey (NSS 2017)

  • Following a major national review, the National Student Survey was substantially changed for 2017. For the NSS 2017, 9 of 22 questions were amended, 11 were added, and 6 were dropped. Two of the new questions were in existing question areas, while the remaining 9 were in 3 new question areas: ‘Learning opportunities’, ‘Learning Community’ and ‘Student voice’. Taken together, these changes result in a survey with a wider approach to assessing the student experience, but which is also a substantively different survey.
  • As a result of the changes, Hefce advise that it is not valid to compare question level responses from 2017 with those from 2016 or previous years and time series data at question level that include 2017 data alongside data from previous years would not be statically robust. This advice will be taken into consideration as we endeavour to understand our own results.
  • In the absence of any other sector-wide causes except potentially the boycott of the NSS by some Students’ Unions, changes to the survey itself appear to have produced a slightly lower result for overall satisfaction across the sector, with overall satisfaction (% Agree for Question 27) decreasing by an average of 1.4 percentage points across 121 universities.
  • The overall national response rate for the NSS was down 4% on 2016 (from 72% to 68%), with Nottingham’s figure of 68% also being lower than our highest-ever response rate of 74% in 2016.
  • 12 institutions, including eight Russell Group universities, have had their institution level results withheld from the data released by Hefce, as those universities did not achieve the minimum response rate of 50% due to student boycotts of the NSS related to its use in the Teaching Excellence Framework. Those universities’ results are therefore not included in the highlight report above (although they are included for subject-level highlights where specific subjects achieved the minimum response rate thresholds). As a result, public media reporting results may vary slightly from the summary provided above.

*Please note that our 2017 % Agree for overall satisfaction is in fact 86.47%, while for 2016 it was 88.73, with the total change being -2.26. Due to rounding in public media, the difference will be reported as 86% and 89% respectively, slightly overstating the decline in overall satisfaction at University level.

Looking back at Wonder – this year’s achievements

August 8th, 2017

This year’s Wonder took place on Saturday 17 June and welcomed the local community on to campus to take part in a number of fun activities hosted by staff and students. A report summarising achievements and feedback has now been produced and is available to view.

The event saw approximately 7,280 visitors join us on campus for 111 activities hosted by over 800 volunteers. Feedback from staff, students, volunteers and visitors has been overwhelmingly positive with 94% of visitors strongly agreeing that the University provides a valuable contribution to the local community.

The Campaign and Alumni Relations Office raised £504 for the Children’s Brain Tumour Research Centre while Lakeside recorded over 5,430 visits to their venues. 77% of visitors said they were extremely likely to recommend Wonder to others.

Professor Sir David Greenaway said: “I am in awe of the commitment and enthusiasm that University of Nottingham staff and students have shown for Wonder. Being genuine in our care for and interest in the local community will always be important to us. I am proud to have worked with colleagues who put this feeling into action so emphatically when the opportunity arises – and who do it so well. I was not surprised to read, having attended the event myself, that our visitors found our people and our campus so welcoming. I could tell the day meant something to all those who came to be part of it. This event has been a fantastic achievement and a very big success – thank you to all who were involved.”

Our Research Vision: introducing Smart Industrial Systems

August 1st, 2017

Smart Industrial Systems is one of our six Beacons of Excellence — transdisciplinary areas of world-leading research excellence that address global challenges.

Following introductions to Propulsion Futures, the Rights Lab, Precision Imaging, Future Food and Green Chemicals, the spotlight now falls on Smart Industrial Systems.

The industrial economy was about manufacturing physical products while the digital economy is about delivering online services. These will collide in the future economy in the form of personalised experiences.

In our new industrial age, smart factories will deliver highly personalised goods and services.

Research at Nottingham is redefining our relationships with technologies and each other.

We will establish a programme of fundamental and powerful discovery to respond with speed and agility to the unprecedented pace of change in our world.

Professor Steve Benford, Director of Smart Industrial Systems, said: “The University of Nottingham is in a unique position to unlock the opportunity and address the challenge.

“We are currently constructing a £100m centre for advanced manufacturing to tackle the challenges of industry 4.0 — from digital design to robotic manufacturing to capturing data from thru-life service.

“We also host the Horizon national hub for Digital Economy Research that is pioneering online services for mobility, healthcare and creativity, including collaborating with ethicists and lawyers to ensure the fair and transparent use of personal data.

“Our beacon will bring these together to establish a unique cross-disciplinary environment in which engineers, computer scientists and social scientists will collaborate to envisage future experiences and establish their enabling technologies.”

Read more about this revolution in Professor Benford’s Introducing Smart Industrial Systems blog

Beacons of Excellence

The beacons were unveiled at the Royal Society in London at the launch of the University of Nottingham’s Research Vision, a landmark investment of  more than £200m in our people and our research.

Our ambition is for the University of Nottingham to be recognised as among the very best in the world. Our Beacons of Excellence are at the core of this global vision.

The beacons will drive significant inward investment in to our internationally renowned research areas, and support our ambitious vision by increasing collaboration, strengthening networks and partnerships, attracting diverse funding, and raising the reputation of our world-changing research.

Each beacon addresses a key global challenge and collectively they address all 17 of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals.

What our Research Vision means for you

We cannot achieve the ambitious goals of our Research Vision without the support of researchers and all colleagues working across the University.

Research colleagues should have received a guide entitled ‘What our Research Vision means for you’. This guide outlines the opportunities available, and where to go for help and support. You can also access the guide on the dedicated Research Vision Workspace.

A guide to the opportunities our research investment offers to Professional Services and support staff is also now available on the Research Vision Workspace.

Our beacons are just part of a significant investment in the resources, people, infrastructure and environment essential to delivering our world-leading discoveries and your input, support and engagement is invaluable.

We will be holding further research roadshows to hear Professor Dame Jessica Corner outline what the Research Vision means for you, and how you can get involved — to support and shape the future of research at our University.

Look out for more roadshow dates in the coming weeks.
