Nominations are now being accepted for the Lord Dearing Awards 2018. These awards provide an important way to help us recognise staff members’ outstanding contributions to enhancing the student learning environment.
If you’ve been inspired or challenged by a member of staff at the University of Nottingham, we’d like to hear about it! Both staff and students can nominate someone for an award; details on how to do this are available now on the Lord Dearing Awards webpage.
Each year 20 awards are given to teaching staff and 10 are given to staff from other areas such as technical or support staff.
In addition to the individual awards, the Lord Dearing Award for Excellence in the Learning Environment will be given to one School or Department where efforts to achieve excellence in teaching and in the student experience have been embedded across all programme teams and staff groups. Heads of School or Departments are invited to self-nominate their unit with the submission of a short statement (maximum 500 words).
The deadline for this year’s nominations is Friday 10 November.
Find out more on the Lord Dearing Awards webpage.

From Saturday 28 October to Sunday 19 November major road repairs will take place to the main spine road at the Jubilee campus.
The resurfacing of the road will be a 1 in 20 year renewal and will include new heavy duty road cushions which are designed to allow cyclists through unimpeded, and which buses and all delivery vehicles and cars can straddle. They are multidirectional to benefit those utilising the parking bays.
Please note that the scarifying and relaying of the road will be carried out predominantly on the weekends and this will incur possibly the most noise, with the concentrated works (pecking the base for the concrete cushions and localised iron works) being undertaken during the week. This will also include a period of curing for the new road concrete cushions, at which point there will be no evident work occurring on site. All relining of the road surface will be undertaken after completion of the relaying of the new surface and will be notified in due course.
During the road repairs, a section of the road and availability of some car/cycle parking facilities will be affected. Click here to view a map of the planned works.
It may be that some disabled parking spaces are affected by the works. If this is the case, we can arrange access to suitable replacement parking spaces: to discuss this, please contact Paul Wright on 0115 9516666.
The estates team apologises for any inconvenience during this period.
Please also note that bus stops outside Newark Hall and The Exchange Building will be closed for the duration of the road works. The following bus stops will be used as alternatives:
- Jubilee hopper bus (903) – buses will drop off on Triumph Road at the bus stop close to Southwell Hall (bus stop RA53). For journeys towards University Park, buses will pick up from here and from the bus stop on Wollaton Road just before the main entrance to Jubilee Campus (RA07).
- City Hospital hopper bus (905) – for journeys towards City Hospital, buses will drop off and pick up on Triumph Road at the bus stop close to Southwell Hall (bus stop RA53).
- NCT service 31 – for journeys towards the city centre, buses will start from Wollaton Road at the bus stop opposite the main entrance to Jubilee Campus (bus stop WO36).

See below for a message on behalf of University Executive Board regarding a letter from Mr Chris Heaton-Harris MP.
Colleagues will be aware of recent media reporting surrounding a letter sent to all Vice-Chancellors from Mr Chris Heaton-Harris MP. In the context of Brexit, the letter requested names of staff teaching European affairs, copies of syllabus and links to lectures.
The Vice-Chancellor will not be replying to the letter.
A constant value of our University, indeed of all universities, is that academic freedoms are to be cherished and that the personal views of academics have no bearing on their ability to deliver stimulating, challenging courses which include a full range of views and opinions.

Please be aware that Misco (the University IT Accessories and Peripherals supplier) has gone into administration.
For this reason and with immediate effect Procurement has suspended the ability to place orders with them until we receive additional information from the company — new requisitions cannot be raised at this point and Agresso requisitions currently open in workflow cannot be approved or GRNd.
In the interim the Procurement team is working with suppliers to provide an alternative means of ordering the products. Please contact procurement@nottingham.ac.uk if you have further queries including any outstanding orders with Misco.
Please also be aware that a range of accessories and peripherals formerly available from Misco has been added to the Jigsaw24 punch-out site within Agresso. Please contact procurement@nottingham.ac.uk if there are items missing that were previously available from Misco and we will work with Jigsaw to expand the range. This is a temporary arrangement whilst a formal tender exercise can be conducted.

Established in 2008 by the Scholarly Publishing and Academic Resources Coalition (SPARC) and partners in the student community, International Open Access Week marks an opportunity each year to showcase what is happening worldwide in the momentum towards the open sharing of research.
Taking place Monday 23 October – Sunday 29 October 2017, the theme of the 10th International Open Access Week is ‘open in order to…’
This is an invitation to answer the question of what tangible benefits can be achieved by making scholarly outputs openly available.
“Open in order to…” is intended as a prompt to go beyond talking about openness and focus instead on what openness enables us to do within individual disciplines and institutions. For our academic staff at the University of Nottingham, we might list the key benefits of open access publishing as:
- disseminating your work to a broader audience;
- complying with open access mandates;
- promoting and publicising quality research;
- providing easier access at no cost; and
- maximising impact and citation potential.
Find out more about how to join the conversation and support open access by visiting the Research Exchange blog.
