A new Nottingham Open Online Course (NOOC), exploring the way in which emerging technologies are changing work, education and politics has been launched by two members of the University of Nottingham student community.
The NOOC, titled ‘A student’s guide to the future’, is aimed at anyone and everyone at the University who is interested in debating the future of the University, engaging in politics and civil society, and how they will work when they are a graduate.
Delivered online via communication platform Aula, the free course uses digital tools to take a critical look at how technology is rapidly changing the way students learn, participate in civil society, and will work in the future.
It explores how emerging technologies are changing what it is to be a student, focusing on topics such as:
This NOOC has been developed entirely by current and recently graduated students of the University of Nottingham. In essence, it’s for students by students.
Any current student studying at the University of Nottingham in the UK, China or Malaysia can take part in the course – which launches on Monday 23 April. The NOOC will remain open until the end of term and students there’s no obligation to complete it. However, students who wish to get the most out of the course should sign up as soon as possible.

“It’s been almost 20 years since the University of Nottingham opened its campus in Malaysia, becoming the first British university to establish an overseas campus anywhere in the world.
The University of Nottingham Malaysia delivers a world-class British education to around 5,000 students every year — and last year we were delighted to celebrate our 10,000th graduate. Our research focuses on Malaysia and the South East ASEAN region. Its impact has been well-received by publications and within the scientific community.
Like all universities, one of our important goals is to demonstrate that our global activities have a real and tangible benefit. As such, we are planning a number of activities in London and Nottingham in the run-up to the British Council’s annual Going Global Conference, to help celebrate the huge contribution made by our presence in Malaysia, and our connections to ASEAN.
What’s planned?
Our activities commence on Tuesday 24 April, when we will host several events in London to explore the role of education, research and people in building relations between the UK, Malaysia, and nations across the world. If you’re in the London on that day, particularly if you are an alumnus, get in touch with mvc-events@nottingham.ac.uk. It would be great to see you.
On Wednesday 25 April we host our first ever Nottingham and Malaysia Day, to celebrate our connections between Nottingham and Malaysia. A number of events will take place at University Park and Sutton Bonington aimed at staff, current students and alumni. To find out more, visit the Malaysia Week website.
From Wednesday 2 May – Friday 4 May, Malaysia will host the annual Going Global Conference, which brings together international education leaders from around the world to debate the future of further and higher education. The entire education sector in Malaysia has pulled together to arrange what looks to be a fantastic event, and the Ministry of Higher Education and British Council deserve special mentions for the effort and significant support that they have provided. The conference is truly a flagship event for Malaysia, which will further establish the country as an educational hub.
As well as these central events, there are a number of other events taking place — including a half day tour of our Malaysia campus on Wednesday 2 May, where up to 100 education leaders will be able to see examples of some of the groundbreaking research that is taking place.
Also coinciding with the Going Global Conference is the launch of Discover our world — a campaign to raise the profile of UNMC to our many audiences. The official launch will be on Thursday 3 May. A number of guests, colleagues, friends and speakers will be welcomed at the launch – highlights of which will include a Malaysian-themed experiment from Professor Sir Martyn Poliakoff as a live version of his Periodic Table of Videos series, which has attracted some 175 million hits on YouTube.
The evening event will feature inspirational short presentations from some of our leading researchers on topics including elephant conservation, mathematics and cancer research, and securing the future of our food.

Such significant research carried out at UNMC has the potential to have a significant impact on the lives of many Malaysians and people around the world.
Looking at the agenda, it’s clear that we are in for a busy two weeks, both in the UK and in Malaysia — and I look forward to welcoming you to the many events, talks and activities that are taking place. Please join us in celebrating Malaysia!”
Professor Graham Kendall
Provost and CEO of The University of Nottingham Malaysia Campus (UNMC).

A number of interesting public events will take place this year around Jubilee campus.
The series of events has been organised by the newly-formed Friends of Jubilee Campus — a group which aims to encourage the local community to visit and enjoy the campus grounds and gardens.
The events range from photography, art and wreath-making workshops to architecture tours and wildlife walks. All of the events are open to the public, though early booking is advised as some events have a limit on numbers.

At the turn of the millennium, the University of Nottingham established the first UK overseas campus anywhere in the world — in Malaysia. On Wednesday 25 April 2018, the University will host its very first Nottingham and Malaysia Day.
Throughout Nottingham and Malaysia Day, there will be a number of activities taking place at University Park and Sutton Bonington.
These activities will include the opportunity for staff and students to network with colleagues from UNMC and view research posters, and attend symposiums where senior colleagues including Provost Graham Kendall and Vice-Provosts Ong Fon Sim and Deb Hall will outline the evolution of the UNMC, the opportunities Malaysia and the ASEAN region presents for Higher Education, and the vision for the future. The symposium attendees will also be able to learn more about the collaborative activity taking place between Malaysia and the UK.
The day will also feature talks where staff and students interested in learning about working or studying at UNMC (or UNNC) will be able to hear current and former staff secondees to UNMC share their experience. There will also be the chance to learn more about mobility opportunities to UNMC and also to speak with a student who studied at both Malaysia and Ningbo campuses.
In the afternoon, Malaysian food will be available for purchase on the Djanogly Terrace. Why not enjoy your lunch in the company of students from the University’s Malaysian Society who will be giving demonstrations of Malaysian dances and sharing traditional crafts and games? Attendees will also be able to try the notorious King of Fruits – the durian. Come along and see if you are one of those who love or loath this pungent fruit!
To end the day a drop-in Reception will take place on the Djanogly Terrace where there will be further cultural activities and networking with staff and students.
With staff and students from UNMC and the UK collaborating to deliver a range of activity, this promises to be a first-class celebration of the University and its impact in Malaysia.
Please check the Malaysia Week webpage for more details on each event, and to reserve places at each of the Sutton Bonington and University Park symposiums and Staff Mobility Seminar.

If you checked your social media on Sunday 1 April you may have seen an announcement about a new space in Hallward library where students can study surrounded by cats: the #Cattic.
The #Cattic was this year’s April Fool — a campaign created and shared by the Digital and Media teams. The teams worked together with Estates and Libraries to create a short video presenting something that our staff and students could believe was in development, before sharing the story over University social media.
The Digital Team also commissioned an artist’s impression of what the #Cattic could look like, and the news team published a blog post about the development that explained the plans in more detail.
April Fool’s day fell on Easter Sunday this year, which meant the story had to work even harder to cut through the social media noise of family events. The Digital Team enlisted the help of social media savvy colleagues at the University to support the story and monitored the reaction before revealing that the story was a joke.
The campaign was hugely successful. The story reached over 200,000 people on 1 April and was a huge talking point on our Facebook, Twitter and Instagram profiles with over 3,000 comments on our posts. The blog post achieved 3,000 views that day.
We fooled a lot more people than expected, including some students who clearly didn’t realise what date it was and were over-excited at the idea of studying with cats. We also reached over 100,000 people who weren’t fans of our Facebook page thanks to their friends tagging them in the comments.
Our key takeaway from this project — include Bertie the Hallward cat in your communications if you want people to pay attention to your story.

Athletes from the University of Nottingham’s sporting community played a key part in Team England’s medal haul at the 2018 Commonwealth Games.
A number of current students, alumni, UoN staff and associates took part in the Games — one of the largest multi-sport championships in the world — during April 2018 at Australia’s Gold Coast.
They won a fantastic total of 11 medals, helping boost Team England’s overall score to 136 medals including 45 golds, 45 silvers and 46 bronze medals.
Among the high performances were those of University of Nottingham student, Maria Tsaptsinos, and Head Coach Kelly Sibley, who won an historic bronze medal in the table tennis team event — marking the first table tennis medal of the games and crowning another incredible year for University of Nottingham Table Tennis.
The enthusiastic support of Maria Tsaptsinos for her team mates was also picked up by the BBC, who created a ‘ping pong passion’ video featuring some great shots of the team in action, with close ups of Maria spurring them on!
Elsewhere, the Men’s and Women’s hockey teams both beat India in bronze medal matches to ensure alumni George Pinner, James Gall, Harry Martin and Joanne Hunter all made the podium for Team England.
In summary, the medal tally and contribution from UoN Sport is as follows:
The Department of Sport has published a roundup providing more details about how all of those associated with UoN Sport succeeded in the Games. Read it here.
Many congratulations to all of our athletes for their performances during the Games!
