Power outage on campus: University of Nottingham Malaysia

February 12th, 2020

There has been an unexpected power outage today (Wed 12 Feb) on our University of Nottingham Malaysia Campus (UNMC).

Our team is working with utility company TNB to resolve this as soon as possible.

Gensets and generators are currently being set up to provide power to the campus. Full power will likely be restored gradually by the end of today.

All scheduled classes will be cancelled and re-scheduled for a future date. Students will be informed by their School about any re-scheduled dates and times. All other University activities will carry on as usual unless advised otherwise.

If you are staying on campus and require assistance, please contact your hall tutors.

An email has been sent to all staff on campus with more information about work arrangements.

If you are leaving the campus, please ensure that lights and power sockets are switched off.

Please check the University of Malaysia’s Facebook feed for further updates.

STEMM Public Engagement Survey – Have your say

February 10th, 2020

The University wants to hear experiences of staff participating in scientific outreach and public engagement online.

We are keen to hear from staff working in STEMM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics and Medicine)-based subjects as well as those working in social sciences (e.g. psychology, economics, sociology/sociolinguistics.)

The survey goes live today (Monday 10 February) and closes on Friday 20 March.

You can take part in the survey here. (O365 login required)

Responses to the survey will feed into ongoing research being conducted by STEMM-CHANGE, an EPSRC-funded project driving a positive change in culture and practices in Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI).

In undertaking this research the University hopes to better understand how the online presence of scientists, engineers, technicians, medics, and other researchers is evaluated and judged in global public spaces.

A key dimension of this study is looking at the digital discrimination, bias and harassment that may be experienced by professionals participating in these kinds of activities, and the hidden barriers to inclusion they potentially introduce when encountered.

The survey is completely anonymous – at no point will you be asked for your name or any personally identifiable information, including institutional or industrial affiliation.

For more information about this research and its role in the wider STEMM-CHANGE project at the University, please contact:

Travel to and from campus – severe weather warning/Clifton Bridge closure

February 9th, 2020

Travel to and from campus is likely to be affected by Storm Ciara and the closure of Clifton Bridge for the early part of the week. Please be aware of potential delays and plan journeys and working arrangements accordingly.

Clifton Bridge closure
The A52 Clifton Bridge is closed eastbound within the junction of the A453 at Queens Drive Interchange. Repair teams are carrying out investigations into damaged steel underneath the road, prompting the closure of the eastbound carriageway. The closure and diversions are expected to be in place until Wednesday at the earliest.

In addition to the eastbound carriageway closure, lane two will be closed westbound heading into Nottingham, along with the A52 eastbound entry slip from the A6005 near the Queen’s Medical Centre.

Information on the closure and diversions is available on the Highways England website and East Midlands Twitter feed.

This is causing severe delays at peak travel periods across Nottingham, including access on and off our Nottingham campuses. Colleagues should plan journeys in advance, stagger any arrival and departure times and use public transport where possible – agreeing any change of working patterns with line managers in advance.

Severe weather protocol
If you are unable to travel to your place of work due to severe weather conditions, contact your line manager, or nominee, prior to your normal start time – or as soon as possible thereafter.

Subject to approval and operational needs, employees may be able to work from home – though there will be roles that cannot be completed from home. Alternatively, you and your manager could agree annual leave, unpaid leave or other arrangements as appropriate.

Full information is available on the HR webpages.

Updates on travel delays will be posted on Staff Room and Campus News as new information becomes available.

A52 Bramcote Roundabout to Priory Roundabout: Road closure

February 7th, 2020

Between Monday 17 February and mid-April 2020, Highways England will be carrying out safety improvement works on the A52 Eastbound and Westbound carriageways between the Bramcote and Priory roundabouts.

To keep the programme for works as short as possible and to minimise disruption to the local community, residents, businesses and road users, the work will be undertaken between 8pm and 6am, Monday to Friday.

The scheme of work involves installing six average speed safety camera masts within the central reservation. These will be fitted with 24 cameras. New safety signs, control cabinets, electrical cables and associated ducting will also be installed.

How will the work affect traffic?

Highways England will work using a mixture of overnight lane closures and full carriageway closures. The works will be mainly completed under overnight lane closures. To minimise inconvenience and disruption, one carriageway at a time will be worked on and roads will be closed in phases.

During full road closures, signed diversion routes will be put in place – but all carriageways are expected to remain open throughout the daytime.

Please note: All planned works may be subject to change due to weather conditions or unforeseen circumstances.

How will the work affect businesses, residents, pedestrians and/or cyclists?

Access to residences will be maintained wherever possible.

For safety reasons, Highways England will need to close some sections of the footpath/cycleway along the A52 Westbound carriageway while they work.

Alternative arrangements will be made for pedestrians and cyclists so they can continue their journeys safely. Footpaths and cycleways will remain open as usual outside of the planned working hours.

For any questions about this work, please email Highways England’s Public Liaison Officer, Irene Plant or call 07768 796 542.

University of Nottingham Appoints New Chancellor, Baroness Young of Hornsey OBE

February 6th, 2020

The University of Nottingham today appointed Crossbench peer and anti-slavery campaigner, Baroness Young of Hornsey OBE, as the University’s new Chancellor.

Baroness Young is an author, actor and peer. She became an independent Crossbench member of the House of Lords in 2004 where she works on legislation to eliminate modern slavery, and is the founding co-chair of the All Party Parliamentary Groups on Ethics and Sustainability in Fashion and Sport, Modern Slavery and Human Rights.

Baroness Young has served on the boards of several national cultural organisations and chaired the Young Review and Agenda, addressing racial disproportionality and the vulnerability of traumatised women in the justice system, as well as being Co-Chair of the Foundation for Future London.

She has championed the role of public bodies, such as local authorities, NHS and government departments to produce statements on modern slavery in the same way as commercial companies, to explain the steps they are taking to rid their supply chains of forced and exploitative labour.

Baroness Young already has strong and active links with the University, having accepted an Honorary Professorship with the Rights Lab and the School of Politics and International Relations in 2018 and a Doctor of Laws, honoris causa in 2019. The Rights Lab is a University Beacon of Excellence where more than 100 researchers are working to help end global modern slavery by 2030. Here, she acts as adviser on research projects with policy impact and leads public engagement activities and policy events being run by the Rights Lab as well as acting in an advisory role on research projects where there could be policy impact.

The University’s Chancellor is an unremunerated role where the office-holder performs a number of key roles including ceremonial duties and graduation ceremonies, as well as acting as an ambassador, advocate and strategic adviser for the University in the UK and overseas. Baroness Young’s appointment follows a unique invitation to staff, students and alumni to nominate the University’s next Chancellor.

Baroness Young said: “It is a huge honour to be appointed Chancellor of the University of Nottingham, an institution I respect and know well through its pioneering work to tackle the global scourge of modern slavery. The role is both challenging and tremendously exciting and offers a unique opportunity to continue to combine academic rigour, policy-making and practice with colleagues while representing Nottingham, its dedicated staff and its talented students on the global stage.”

Vice-Chancellor Professor Shearer West said: “I am delighted to welcome Baroness Young as Chancellor of our University and look forward to working closely with her as we implement our new University strategy to meet the challenges of the next decade and beyond. Her work on combatting modern slavery has already galvanised researchers and campaigners across Nottingham and with our many partners across the world. Lola’s appointment as Chancellor epitomises the spirit of our strategy – nurturing a diversity of world-leading talent to create solutions for improving lives in our communities at home and across the globe.”

Chair of University Council, Professor Sir Keith O’Nions said: “I am very pleased that Baroness Young is joining the team at Nottingham. Her impressive achievements in the arts, politics and academia will bring significant benefits to our staff and student community, and help write the next chapter of the University’s own achievements as a leading global institution.”

Baroness Young succeeds Sir Andrew Witty, former chief executive officer of GlaxoSmithKline, who served as Chancellor of the University of Nottingham from 2013 to 2017.

Update on marks processing and Exam Boards

February 4th, 2020

To help manage the volume of marks that are currently being processed, we’re asking academic colleagues to submit your completed marks as soon as possible.

Please note the following points:

  • The deadline for submitting marks is Wednesday 12 February. It is anticipated that marks returned on Wednesday 12 February will be processed by Friday 14 February.
  • Any changes following exam boards should be returned by 12noon on Tuesday 18 February to ensure marks released to students on Thursday 20 February include your changes.
  • Student Services colleagues are aware of the dates for interim Exam Boards and will work with you to ensure you have the information required to run your Board.

We have identified that students will not appear on marksheets if there is an issue with their module enrolment. The marksheet completion guidelines provide guidance on how to add missing students into marksheets. Any amendments that you make must be highlighted to Student Services either by adding a note (as detailed in the guidelines) or by contacting the relevant Student Services assessment team. The team are also on hand if you require further assistance.

Resit marksheets for 2018/19 modules being reassessed in January 2020 will be distributed to academic colleagues this week by Student Services. We would like to remind you that Saturn is the authoritative source of all marks for the 2018/19 year, therefore we will be inputting resit marks into Saturn. Student marks will be moved into Campus Solutions for students that qualify for an award or are continuing with their studies.

The functional and technical rehearsal of marks processing and Exam Boards has indicated that marksheets can be generated, marks can be uploaded and the various calculations can take place as required.  The Language Centre and Medicine PGT had early Exam Boards last week and a workaround was put in place to manage this.

The Exam Boards User Group recently met to review marks and Exam Board reports that have been generated by the functional and technical rehearsal. Colleagues reviewed the reports and verified the calculations that the system generated. The group identified that the process for incorporating Extenuating Circumstances and generating Exam Board reports is different in various schools, so they will agree on a recommended best practice approach. The group will be meeting again on Wednesday 5 February.

Marks processing and Exam Boards FAQs and tips for using Business Intelligence (BI) reports, along with other useful information, are now available for you to view on Workspace.

Key dates

  • Circulation of resit mark sheets for Autumn Semester – W/C 3 February
  • Deadline for submission of marks – Wednesday 12 February
  • Exam Boards – Locally arranged
  • Deadline for submission of amended marks – 12noon, Tuesday 18 February
  • Publication of Autumn Semester results – Thursday 20 February
  • Publication of award outcomes (Education) – BlueCastle switch-on planned for Thursday 20 February

Help and support
For questions regarding completing marksheets please contact the Student Services assessment team:

If you have any questions regarding Exam Boards, User Groups or arranging briefings please email Sandra Mienczakowski

Digital Experience Insights Survey

February 4th, 2020

The Digital Experience Insights Survey has launched and will be live throughout February for staff and students – with ten £100 shopping vouchers to be won.

This is an opportunity for you to share how you use digital technologies and engage with the University’s digital environment so we can improve them in a way that is meaningful to you.

The survey only takes 10-15 minutes to complete and it’s a chance to reflect on your own digital experience which will help us to better understand how we can support your digital needs.

There are four separate surveys for:

Staff

Students

Staff are invited to complete the survey, and to encourage students to also complete the survey where appropriate.

We are requesting that staff do not promote the survey to final-year undergraduates, as it runs concurrently to the National Student Survey.

About the survey
This national survey is being carried out by the University of Nottingham in conjunction with digital solutions specialists, JISC. We’re running the survey to find out more about how the University community uses digital technologies and how we can improve the digital experience at the University.

Review of support for disabled staff at the University of Nottingham

February 3rd, 2020

A review of support for disabled staff at the University of Nottingham has been published, examining the levels of support available and how this is accessed and experienced by disabled staff.

The review, chaired by Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Professor Sarah Sharples, acknowledges that – though there are pockets of good practice – current levels of support for disabled staff are not as consistently high as they should be.

The scope of the review included:

  • On-boarding support for staff following appointment
  • Induction support and reasonable adjustments when joining the University
  • Response to disclosure of a disability whilst working at the University, and support available following disclosure
  • Support for progression and promotion
  • Inclusive management
  • Inclusion on campus

The review identified strengths and areas for improvement across the following themes:

  • Experience of being disabled
  • Physical and digital infrastructure
  • Culture and behaviour
  • Support for line managers
  • Specialist Support provision

A comprehensive action plan to address the issues raised in the review, increase access to consistent support and encourage the sharing of best practice has also been published.

Professor Sharples said: “I, along with the other members of the review panel, want to thank colleagues – particularly the members of our Disabled Staff Network – for their openness in both describing good practice across the University, and the challenges that disabled staff face while working here.

“While there are many strengths in the services and support we provide to disabled staff, the experience is not consistent and needs to be improved. There are many improvements to be made, and we are committed to making these quickly and efficiently.”

For more information on the review and action plan, visit the University’s EDI webpages.

Read Professor Sharples’ blog on the review process and findings.

New Information Security Modules

February 3rd, 2020

To help us all to protect the data we handle, we are continuing our compulsory information security awareness training for all UK-based staff.

On Monday 10 February you will receive an email from “UoN Information Security” with a safe link to the training modules.

There are three modules: spotting phish emails on a mobile device; using USB sticks securely; and handling personal data.

Staff who joined the University since we ran the previous modules (summer 2019) will also have a module on GDPR, and an introduction to phishing.

The total viewing time is about 15 minutes each module, depending on how much you already know about the subject. The modules can be watched separately or together and each one ends with a quiz.

It’s compulsory for all staff at our UK campuses to complete the modules and they will be available until Friday 1 May.
