Eduroam security update – action required

February 17th, 2020

As part of ongoing efforts to maintain a secure wireless network for our users, an update is required to the eduroam wireless Server Certificates. The update will take place from 6pm, Thursday 27 February.

Following the update, all eduroam users will see a warning on each of their devices that their connection “may not be secure”. You may be prompted to log in to eduroam again to accept the new certificate and ensure a secure internet connection via eduroam. Users will need to:

  1. Accept the new certificate when prompted – confirmation of certificate details will be updated on the IT Services website closer to the time
  2. Failing that, forget the eduroam wireless network and re-connect – instructions on how to connect can be found on the IT Services website.

Reminder – for eduroam, your username is your University email address. For example:

  • Undergraduate and Postgraduate Taught students: ‘username@nottingham.ac.uk’
  • Postgraduate Researchers, Staff and Associates*: ‘firstname.lastname@nottingham.ac.uk’
  • *Associates without a University email address should use: ‘username@nottingham.ac.uk’

University-managed Windows laptops should automatically apply the new settings on the first reboot after this date, but will require entering your University email address to re-connect.

Although you may be able to connect to the eduroam wireless network without validating the server certificate, your connection will not be secure and your data may be at risk.

If you have any questions, or require any support after the certificate update, please visit a Smart Bar or contact the IT Service Desk.

Staff Engagement Survey – next steps

February 17th, 2020

The Staff Engagement Survey closed on Friday 10 January. The survey had a final response rate of 55% across our UK, China and Malaysia campuses, including both online and paper surveys.

Director of HR, Jaspal Kaur, said: “Thanks to everyone who completed the survey – your participation will drive discussion and the creation of clear action which will contribute to improving staff engagement, helping to make the University a great place to work.

Particular thanks go to our network of Staff Engagement Champions, who continue to make great efforts on behalf of their colleagues.”

Institutional results will be shared on staff channels in April, when Faculties and Departments will get their departmental results. These results are your cue for conversations around local action planning. Local action plans will be fed back up to the University Executive Board in the late summer.

For more information on the staff engagement cycle speak to your local Staff Engagement Champions.

Nottingham 10k returns to University Park for 2020

February 14th, 2020

Following the huge success of last year’s Run For All Asda Foundation Nottingham 10k – which was held here on University Park – we’re calling on people to sign up and run this year’s event to make it bigger and better!

Over 1,500 people took part in last year’s event, and this year’s is looking set to follow in its footsteps. Taking place on Sunday 31 May, it will be almost exclusively on campus, taking in Highfields Park boating lake.

The Nottingham 10k has a special connection with the University as Run For All is the legacy of the late charity fundraiser Jane Tomlinson CBE, who completed a number of endurance events in the mid-2000s to help raise money for cancer charities after being diagnosed with an incurable cancer herself.

Jane’s family are passionate advocates of the research taking place at Nottingham Breast Cancer Research and last year runners of the Nottingham 10k raised £14,000 for the centre thanks to a partnership with Run For All. The partnership sees £5 of every single entry donated to the Nottingham Breast Cancer Research Centre and runners can also choose the centre as their own fundraising cause.

Dawn Broomfield, Community Fundraising Manager at the University said: “Since the Nottingham Breast Cancer Research Centre was established, we have been overwhelmed by the support received from University staff, students, patients and members of the community.”

Dawn continued: “Research happening here at the University is aimed at detecting breast cancer early, stopping it spreading and treating it right. Last year’s Nottingham 10k was a great success and we would be so grateful if people continue to support us by signing up for this year’s race and choosing to raise funds for the centre.”

Visit the Run For All website to sign up for the 10k and fundraise for the Nottingham Breast Cancer Research Centre.

*Entry for UoN staff will be reduced to £23 until the end of February. A number of charity places are also available for runners who can raise over £100 for NBCRC.

For a charity place or a UoN staff discount code, contact eleanor.alatorre@nottingham.ac.uk from your University email address. Charity places will receive a discount code and a free running vest.

Vest on a Quest – are you taking part in a run this year?

February 14th, 2020

If you’re taking part in a run in 2020, why not take our Vest on a Quest with you and help raise some money for the Nottingham Breast Cancer Research Centre?

From Malaysia to the Arctic Circle to… Clifton, the Nottingham Breast Cancer Research Centre’s (NBCRC) ‘Vest on a Quest’ travelled thousands of miles last year – and is returning for 2020.

Staff and students taking part in a run anywhere in the world between April and September are invited to wear the Nottingham Breast Cancer Research Centre vest and raise money for the vital research it carries out.

Last year’s runners raised almost £3,000 between them and we are looking to top that this year.

Organised by the University’s Campaign and Alumni Relations Office and supported by our Community Fundraising Officer, runners are invited to raise at least £60 sponsorship which will all go to support the work of the NBCRC. Our breast cancer researchers are working to:

  • Develop a blood test to detect cancer earlier
  • Stop breast cancer spreading throughout the body
  • Develop effective targeted treatments

If you are interested in getting involved, and happy to have your run featured on the Campaign and Alumni Relations Office’s social media channels, email supportus@nottingham.ac.uk or call Eleanor Alatorre on 0115 74 84978 with details of your run and whether you have a special reason for wanting to support the centre.

Follow the progress of our Vest on a Quest and read updates from NBCRC on Facebook.

Science hits the park

February 13th, 2020

Getting up close to tarantulas, finding out how to make renewable plastics from microbes and an interactive brain funfair are just some of the activities on offer at Science in the Park at Wollaton Hall on Saturday 7 March.

The popular one-day event is being run by the University of Nottingham and Nottingham Trent University as part of British Science Week and is a free, family friendly day packed full of activities to celebrate science, technology, engineering and maths.

Many of the activities give visitors the chance to get hands-on and the team from the University of Nottingham’s ‘Spiderlab’ will be showing their ‘Marvellous Minibeasts’. There will be tarantulas and scorpions on display, plus giant millipedes and hissing cockroaches for people who are brave enough to hold!

There will also be activities run by researchers from the Green Chemicals team showing how chemicals can be used in a more environmentally friendly way to create new products, with one activity where children can see how enzymes break down by using their spit to break down starch.

The wildlife of Wollaton Park will also be featured as part of the fair with Nottingham Trent University showing how ducks keep themselves dry on their Nature’s Raincoats exhibit.

The activity draws inspiration from nature, using a stuffed duck and dried lotus leaves as examples, to show how nature can keep itself dry. RSPB will also be guiding a nature walk spotting some of the birds and habitats on the park.
