Update from Professor Dame Jessica Corner
As 2020 draws to a close, I wonder if any year has prompted so much time for reflection on what we truly value, and whether a new year has carried so many hopes.
I am also sure that our festive break has seldom been as welcome or richly deserved.
My heartfelt thanks to all of you.
On Tuesday, in the last online town hall for researchers in 2020, Professor Zoe Wilson summed up your contribution perfectly: thanks to your enthusiasm, dedication and resilience we have stayed the course, continuing to deliver research in the most challenging of circumstances and remaining focused on the road ahead.
Please take a few moments to watch this video, as Zoe and fellow Associate Pro-Vice-Chancellors for Research and Knowledge Exchange from each of our faculties reflect on 2020 and look ahead to 2021.
Discover more in Dame Jessica’s research update.

University of Nottingham in Malaysia Vice Provost (Research & Knowledge Exchange) Professor Deborah Hall has today announced that she will be leaving the University early in 2021 as she has accepted an offer of a professorial role with Heriot-Watt University Malaysia.
In her new role as Professor of Positive Psychology, Deborah will provide core leadership to the Psychology academic team at the Malaysia campus, as well as head the formation of an exciting new research institute in Positive Education across the global campuses.
Professor Hall has secured numerous achievements for our Malaysia campus since her appointment as Vice Provost including creating a research vision that seeks to raise aspirations towards inter-disciplinary research that changes lives and, as part of the delivery of that vision, establishing a number of new research centres and groups, including Future Food Malaysia and Nanotechnology.
Provost & CEO Professor Graham Kendall paid tribute to Professor Hall, saying: “As Vice Provost, Deb has been a key player at UNM and helped to lead our institution as part of our senior management team as well as bringing a real focus to our research and knowledge exchange outputs. She will be missed by her many friends and colleagues at Nottingham, whether that is in Malaysia, China or the UK and I wish her every success for her continued career at Heriot-Watt University Malaysia.”
Professor Hall said: “Reflecting on my time at UNM, I’m extremely proud to have led a team that has created a research vision that seeks to raise aspirations towards inter-disciplinary research that changes lives. As part of the delivery of that vision, we’ve established a number of exciting new research centres and groups, including Future Food Malaysia and Nanotechnology. I’m also pleased to have expanded support for early-career researchers with many new initiatives that provide pump-priming funding and grant-writing, and have improved our success rate in securing competitive research grants from the Malaysian government.
“But of course, more than any single professional achievement, I’m most privileged in having been part of such a friendly University community stretching across Malaysia, China and the UK. I’d like to thank the academic and professional services staff with whom I’ve worked over the years. While I’m sad to leave behind so many good friends and colleagues, the opportunity at Heriot-Watt University was one that was too good to miss.”
The University will instigate a recruitment competition in the new year to secure the next Vice Provost (Research & Knowledge Exchange) for the University of Nottingham Malaysia.
Professor Hall’s academic career associated with the University of Nottingham began in 1996 when she joined the Medical Research Council (MRC) Institute of Hearing Research on University Park, where she established and led an auditory functional magnetic resonance imaging team, in collaboration with the Nobel Prize-winning Sir Peter Mansfield Imaging Centre.
Securing the Thomas-Simm Littler prize in 2010 for her services to audiology, Professor Hall went on to lead the renewal of the National Institute of Health Research (NIHR) Nottingham Hearing Biomedical Research Unit as its Director from 2012 – 2017, and was also part of the School of Medicine senior management team that established the NIHR Nottingham Biomedical Research Centre (2017 – 2022).
Driven by a passion for interdisciplinary research that empowers people and enriches lives, Deborah is an advocate for actively involving patients in “doing science together with researchers”. This is epitomised in her work to lead the COMiT tinnitus initiative since 2016 that has engaged more than 700 patients with healthcare professionals, clinical researchers, commercial representatives, and funders across the globe. In 2018, this work received a ‘Putting Patients First’ award from the NIHR Clinical Research Network East Midlands Research.

The university carries out regular checks on all of our buildings, including halls of residence, to ensure that they are safe for occupants.
During a recent survey, a number of issues were identified in Melton and Southwell Halls. This relates to passive measures that stop the spread of fire through a building.
Both the university and the fire service are satisfied that students can safely remain in the halls during the works. However, this work, which will take place over the next few months, will be noisy and disruptive at times and so we have taken the decision to relocate students while this is being completed.
This is because many of our students are doing online lectures, seminars and timetabled events in their rooms due to the current Covid-related restrictions and we want to ensure they can carry out their studies peacefully. Moving students away from the work will provide a better experience for them.
Those in Southwell Hall will move to Newark Hall in January 2021 for the rest of the academic year. Both halls are identical in their offering.
Those in Melton Hall can opt to remain in the self-catered hall and move to a quieter part of the building or move to Newark Hall with complimentary catering as there are no self-catering rooms within Newark.
Again the university would like to stress that the halls remain safe for staff and students. We have been in touch with all students affected and are supporting them in advance of the move.

The university is committed to improving the IT systems and processes that we all work with to ensure they are simple and easy to use.
The HR, Finance and Procurement teams will be commencing work in the New Year to review their systems and services, and the way in which we engage with them. Processes such as the way in which we book annual leave, book onto training courses, claim expenses and make purchases will be reviewed.
Initial analysis work, along with the ongoing feedback we have received, indicate that the current systems are considerably dated, do not integrate well with each other, are time-consuming and can be complex. In addition, we recognise that some of the systems we use are not always easy to access when working remotely.
In the New Year we will be inviting colleagues from across the University to provide feedback on HR, Finance and Procurement systems and services. Through this vital feedback and input, we will commence a concerted effort to simplify and improve these for everyone.
The HR, Finance, Procurement and Information Services teams will be working together to ensure we obtain input from all areas. After the teams have gathered all the feedback, they will identify an IT system that meets our requirements and brings a significant return on investment. The improved system will also benefit from additional IT security protections and resilience, which is particularly important given the increasing risks that now exist with the prevalence of malicious software and computer related viruses.
We look forward to keeping you updated on this project moving forwards. If you have any questions, please email the Information Services team.
