University wins award for Graduation Without Borders

June 14th, 2021

The university has been awarded bronze in the CASE Circle of Excellence Awards for Graduation Without Borders.

Each year the CASE Circle of Excellence Awards recognises institutions whose talented staff members advanced their institutions through innovative, inspiring and creative ideas. The awards acknowledge superior accomplishments that have lasting impact, demonstrate the highest level of professionalism, and deliver exceptional results.

Due to the restrictions still in place across the world last summer, we could not give the Class of 2020 the graduation ceremony on our campuses that they, their families, friends, and supporters wanted or deserved. So on Friday 24 July 2020, in place of in-person ceremonies, the university celebrated the achievements of our graduating Class of 2020 with a virtual event. The online festival began at 1am on Friday 24 July as dawn broke in New Zealand, following the sun over a 24-hour period and spanning multiple social media platforms.

This day became an event, a campaign, and a moment that brought our entire university community, partners, stakeholders, alumni, media, and influencers from all over the world together in celebration of the Class of 2020.

Congratulations to all who were involved in this institution-wide effort and thank you to all who supported and participated.

Following the postponement of in-person graduation ceremonies for 2021, graduates from 2020, 2021 and 2022 will now be invited to what promises to be our largest ever set of in-person graduation celebrations next year.

Nottingham awarded Bronze Race Equality Charter

June 14th, 2021

The university has secured Bronze Race Equality Charter status, becoming one of just 18 institutions to hold the award, which recognises our plans to tackle racial inequality.

Assessed and awarded by Advance HE, the Race Equality Charter (REC) provides a framework through which institutions work to identify and self-reflect on institutional and cultural barriers standing in the way of Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) staff and students. Member institutions develop initiatives and solutions for action, and can apply for a Bronze or Silver REC award, depending on their level of progress.

Staff and students from across the university played a huge part in the university attaining this recognition – particularly those from the BAME community. A team of REC Student Ambassadors was recruited to help gather data and shape the plan, and played a key part in engaging the wider student body in the survey and application process.

The Bronze award marks the beginning of complex, difficult and necessary work to address institutional issues such as the student attainment gap and the ethnicity pay gap.

The REC institutional action plan is available to view on our Equality, Diversity and Inclusion webpages. The REC implementation group will meet three times a year and review the action plan and monitor progress. The university is currently calling for volunteers to be members of this group.

The REC self-assessment-team was responsible for developing the university’s application. The SAT was co-chaired by Professor Sarah Sharples, Pro-Vice-Chancellor for EDI and People and Stacy Johnson MBE, Associate Professor in the School of Health Sciences.

Stacy Johnson said: “As the co-chair, I am absolutely delighted with the result. As a black academic, I am optimistic and hopeful about what this means for the future of our university community. The REC self- assessment process emboldened us to have difficult, meaningful conversations about race equality and inclusion at the University of Nottingham.

“Achieving the bronze award gives us the mandate to continue those conversations and take transformative action. I am grateful to staff and students of all ethnicities for the courage they showed on this journey. Now the work starts.”

Professor Sharples said: “I am absolutely delighted to have received confirmation of the Bronze award for our REC submission. This represents a tremendous amount of hard work from many of our students and staff.

“I would particularly like to commend and thank our colleagues from Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic backgrounds who have offered their personal time and reflected on their own lived experiences to help us to identify strong and meaningful actions which will deliver change. It is the responsibility of all of our staff and students, no matter what our background or ethnicity, to work together towards our mission to be an anti-racist university.

Sam Hawkins, outgoing Liberation Officer for the University of Nottingham Students’ Union, said:

“I congratulate the University of Nottingham on its Race Equality Charter Bronze Award.

“This year, my colleagues and I at the Students’ Union have worked collaboratively with the university to advance race equity. The university have involved, and listened to, the voices of Black, Asian, and Minority Ethnic student members and representatives in the creation of its action plan throughout my tenure as Liberation Officer.

“At the Students’ Union, we are acutely aware of the disparities between Black, Asian, and Minority Ethnic students compared to their white peers, and we are committed to the aims of the Race Equality Charter, as outlined in our letter in the institutional application.

“I am excited to see the university use this award as a stepping stone for the continuation of combatting racial inequity at the University of Nottingham.”

REC student ambassador Ruochong Zhang added:

“Working as a REC ambassador has made me realise how much the university strives to provide a sense of cultural belonging for all. I am very happy for our university to be awarded the Bronze Race Equality Charter, a well-deserved acknowledgement of its effort in improving race equality.

“We still have a long way to go. My dream for the future is that everyone in the university realises that we are all part of a community, we are all equal, and we are all bound to others.”

Chair of the BAME Staff Network, Dr Maria Augusta Arruda, said: “This is great news for the university. I am extremely grateful to all colleagues involved in this endeavour. Now the real work commences, and I hope we can keep the momentum!”

Volunteers needed for REC and Athena Swan self-assessment teams

June 8th, 2021

The university is inviting expressions of interest from representatives across the institution and at all levels to be part of the Bronze REC Implementation Group and/or Athena Swan Institutional SAT group as a Member or a Co-Chair.

This is a significant opportunity for colleagues to be a part of a core group of people who will be delivering positive change at the university.

As part of our Race Equality Charter (REC) submission, we identified the need to review our current governance structure around Equality Diversity and Inclusion (EDI).

This review will ensure that we have a clear oversight of the activities taking place to deliver our action plans to support both race/ethnicity and gender.

The overall aim is that we establish a new structure that would merge some functionality, create new Self-Assessment Teams (SAT), and revise some existing groups.

Members and Co-Chairs are required for the following groups:

  • Bronze REC Action Plan Implementation Group. This Group will help with the delivery of the actions from the REC submission. The group will ensure the Faculties and Departments progress against the REC Action Plan.
  • Athena Swan Institutional SAT. This Group will continue to deliver against the action plan and prepare for the next submission.

The Bronze REC Implementation Group and the Athena Swan ISAT will meet approximately 3 times per year.

The groups will follow a Co-Chair model, which has worked well in other EDI areas. The Bronze REC Implementation Group will be Co-Chaired by Professor Todd Landman and the Athena Swan ISAT will be Co-Chaired by Professor Robert Mokaya, both of whom are members of UEB and will contribute enormously to these groups with their expertise, knowledge, and strategic overview.

The expectation is that Members will play an active part in achieving the recommendations and tasks from the REC and Athena Swan action plans.

As Co-Chairs you will ensure that the Bronze REC Implementation Group and the Athena Swan Institutional SAT groups deliver against their associated action plans. You will be supported by the EDI Senior Project Manager and other delivery teams and will also regularly meet with the Pro-Vice-Chancellor for EDI and People. In addition, along with your Co-Chair you will report on progress to the Race and Gender Equality Steering Group, who will meet three times a year.

If you are passionate about EDI and want to be instrumental in helping us create a more inclusive university, we would love to hear from you. Please discuss your application with your line manager, before submitting to ensure that you will be given the time required to play a full part in the group. Workload allocations will also be agreed for all SAT and implementation group members.

Applications from previous Athena/REC SAT members are very welcome.

We are particularly keen to ensure that there is strong representation from all job families and all parts of the university. For the REC implementation group, we would like the membership to be ethnically diverse, aiming for at least 50% of members with Black, Asian or Minority Ethnic backgrounds. For the Athena Swan group, we would like the membership to comprise of at least 50% women and no less than 20% men.

Even if you do not hold a protected characteristic, please do consider applying – it is only by working together that we can make the cultural shifts required to truly deliver equality, diversity, and inclusion within the university.

If you are interested in becoming a Member or Co-Chair of either the Bronze REC Implementation Group or the Athena Swan Institutional SAT, please complete this application form by Friday 18 June 2021. We would also request that you complete an optional separate, confidential, diversity monitoring form.

If you have any questions, please contact steven.macnamara@nottingham.ac.uk.

Personal Relationships Policy updated

June 7th, 2021

Further to feedback from colleagues and trades unions, the Staff Personal Relationships Policy has been amended to remove the requirement to declare relationships between staff members where there is no actual or perceived conflict of interest.

Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Equality, Diversity, Inclusion and People Professor Sarah Sharples said:

“The policy aims to support a safe environment for university staff, and place wellbeing at the heart of our considerations, whilst ensuring visible trust and integrity in decision-making and leadership.

“We have been happy to act on feedback from colleagues and address their concern by removing the need to declare a relationship where there is no conflict of interest in the workplace.

“Different types of relationships will occur between staff in our community, and the existence of a personal relationship between staff members will not always pose a conflict of interest.

“However, where these occur in shared working environments, for example, between a supervisor and a team member, this policy should protect them and their colleagues from actual or perceived conflicts of interest.”

Colleagues should refer to the updated version of the policy and declare personal relationships to a line manager where there is a conflict of interest.  Where any relationships have been declared and there is no conflict of interest, please delete or destroy any copies of the declaration form.
