Picasso, Art, and Faith: a thinking and drawing workshop

As part of the Being Human Festival 2023.

2023 marks the 50th anniversary of Pablo Picasso’s death. Picasso was an experimental artist and, while his name and works remain well known, the relationship between art and spirituality in his works is largely unexplored. Picasso was an atheist, someone who doesn’t believe in a god or gods.

Yet, he uses religious and spiritual imagery in his works. Art is one means to explore one’s own relation with faith, finding meaning through creativity, and puzzling out our own questions and questions that concern society, what it means to be human, on both an individual level and globally.

Working with local artist, Lorna Hamilton, this event will explore Picasso’s legacy as an artist through a ‘thinking and drawing’ workshop.

Participants will discuss what questions of spirituality and faith Picasso’s painting pose today. Then, you can create your own creative piece, using collage to entwine your own questions of faith with artistic expression.

This event is part of the University of Nottingham’s festival Hub programme.
