Feminist: stories from Women’s Liberation

In celebration of Women’s History Month 2016, please join the Rights and Justice Research Priority Area, the Centre for Research in Race and Rights and the Department of American and Canadian Studies for a screening of the award-winning documentary Feminist: Stories From Women’s Liberation, 1963-1970. Filmmaker Jennifer Lee will introduce the film, and afterwards take questions from the audience.

Hate Crime in Nottingham and beyond

What is the rate of hate crime in Nottingham, and in the UK in general? Why do people avoid reporting it, and what can people within and outside the LGBT community do to spread awareness but also prevent crime? Over the course of the evening, David Edgeley from Rainbow Heritage will discuss how barriers to coming out affect the rate of reporting hate crime, and Sam Hope (an activist on LGBT rights) will focus on their work in campaigning against hate crime in Nottingham.

No Drama Obama? Race and the politics of policing during the Obama presidency

As we approach the final year of the Obama era, this lecture will assess what became of a leader whose election in 2008 apparently heralded a new post-racial America. Has Barack Obama’s presidency delivered the kind of deep-rooted changes that were initially prophesised? Had Obama abandoned his core African-American constituency in favour of projecting a race-neutral approach designed to maintain centrist support? How do we assess Obama’s leadership on issues like policing in the context of the current Black Lives Matter movement that is challenging police brutality? What has become of Obama’s ‘no drama’ persona in this final period of his two-term presidency?
