MPs have endorsed the appointment of Professor Dame Jessica Corner as the Executive Chair of Research England following her appearance before the Commons Science and Technology Committee on Wednesday.
The Committee asked Professor Corner a range of questions including relating to her early priorities for the role, how funding of higher education can help address regional inequalities and how she would ensure value for money for the taxpayer in funding higher education providers.
As Executive Chair, Professor Corner will be responsible for leading Research England in its critical role in providing more than £2 billion annually in grant funding to English universities for research.
She will also support knowledge exchange activity and oversee other major funding programmes, as well as the sustainability of the higher education research base in England.
Set up in 2018, Research England is the newest of the nine UKRI Research Councils. It “funds and engages with English higher education providers, to create and sustain the conditions for a healthy and dynamic research and knowledge exchange system in the higher education sector.”
Professor Corner has been Pro-Vice Chancellor for Research and Knowledge Exchange at the University of Nottingham since 2016 and has a background as a trained nurse and academic in cancer palliative care.
In July, it was announced that she had been chosen as the preferred candidate for the role of Executive Chair, taking up her official position in October 2022.

University of Nottingham alumna, Eloghosa Osunde, has been shortlisted for the inaugural Waterstones Debut Fiction Prize for her novel Vagabonds!.
Osunde, a Nigerian writer and visual artist who graduated from the university in 2015, is one of six authors shortlisted for the prize which celebrates debut fiction of all forms and is voted for by Waterstones bookseller.
Vagabonds! paints a portrait of life and death in contemporary Nigeria. Osunde’s bold and beautiful mosaic of a debut novel mixes realism with folklore and mythology with dazzling effect.
The novel’s heroes are the marginalised people of Lagos, whose intersecting lives present a multi-faceted, playful indictment of the country’s capitalism, corruption and oppression. Genre-bending and genre-defining: this novel marks the arrival of a wholly original new voice.
Eloghosa said: “It’s so lovely to be shortlisted for the inaugural Waterstones Debut Fiction Prize! It feels incredible to see my novel continue to go further out in the world, and to be recognised firmly by the prize.
“This being from Waterstones feels especially magical to my younger self, who bought arts supplies, stationery, novels and selected many worlds from the shelves and tables in stores over the years.
“It is truly an honour to have my work be a part of this award that will go on to build excellent things with debut authors who show promise.
“I’m thankful for every single reader this book has already resonated with, and for every new reader who will get to know it because of this moment.”
Osunde is also alumna of the Farafina Creative Writing Workshop, the Caine Prize Workshop and the filmmaking and screenwriting programmes at New York Film Academy.
Her short stories have been longlisted for the 2017 Writvism Short Prize and published in Catapult, Guernica, Berlin Quarterly and the Paris Review, where she has a column with forthcoming stories in the Georgia Review and Gulf Coast.
She is the winner of the 2021 Paris Review Plimpton Prize for Fiction and is currently based in Abuja, Nigeria.
The winner of the Waterstones Debut Fiction prize will be announced at an evening ceremony on Thursday 25 August and will receive a prize of £5,000, as well as the backing of all Waterstones shops and online stores.
Staff and students can request Vagabonds! on order from Hallward Library.

The University of Nottingham and Nottingham Trent University (NTU) have been jointly awarded University of Sanctuary status in recognition of their efforts to welcome and support refugees and forced migrants.
The successful bid was made as part of our collaboration with NTU through the Universities for Nottingham initiative, and makes Nottingham the first city where the universities have made a uniquely joint bid for University of Sanctuary status
A University of Sanctuary award is given to Higher Education institutions that can provide evidence of their commitment to developing initiatives that align with three core principles: learning, embedding, and sharing what it means to seek sanctuary and to ensure that the institution is a place of welcome.
Both universities, alongside their Student Action for Refugees (STAR) action groups, actively collaborate in their efforts to contribute to the most welcoming and accessible environment possible to people seeking sanctuary, contributing to a city-wide culture of welcome and support.
This commitment is reflected throughout the student lifecycle as part of research and teaching activity, as well as well-established partnerships with community organisations across the city and county through a wide range of public engagement and outreach programmes.
The commitment also forms part of the ‘Universities for Nottingham’ Civic Agreement 2020, where both institutions have identified support for the most vulnerable learners as a priority for the educational opportunity stream of work.
Joanna McIntyre, Cora Lindsay and Emma Szembek were part of the steering group responsible for putting together the bid on behalf of the University of Nottingham.
They said: “This award is a recognition of the important contribution that both universities make to enhance opportunities for sanctuary seekers in our city and those working to support them.
This was a collaborative effort, evidenced by the joint application with NTU, and the make-up of the steering group comprising staff, students, representatives from community groups working with refugees, and students from sanctuary seeking backgrounds.
The bid evidenced the wide-ranging activities linked to teaching and learning, research, staff and student citizenship and activism, and strategies to improve access for sanctuary seekers.
We look forward to realising our three-year plan to further develop this work with NTU, to ensure that sanctuary seekers within our communities experience a sense of welcome and opportunities to develop their skills, enrich their life experiences and realise their potential.“
Vice-Chancellor at the University of Nottingham, Professor Shearer West CBE said:
“I am delighted to support the application by the city’s two universities for the University of Sanctuary award.
“When I was Deputy Vice-Chancellor at the University of Sheffield, I witnessed the importance of its own Sanctuary award and the impact it made on staff, students and stakeholders across the city in galvanising their commitment to welcome and support refugees of all nationalities.
“And now as Vice-Chancellor of the University of Nottingham, where Student Action for Refugees (STAR) was founded, I am privileged to lead a community which is so devoted to supporting vulnerable people from across the globe.
“Together, the University of Nottingham and Nottingham Trent University work to promote sanctuary and support those who are threatened or displaced by conflict or persecution – through our research, teaching, and student activity well as our partnerships with community organisations across the city.”

As part of the university’s ongoing commitment to equality, diversity, and inclusion, we are inviting applications for the celebration of Black history, culture, and achievements to take place during Black History Month in October 2022.
The national theme this year is Time for Change: Action not Words, so we would encourage colleagues to think about how we create or share meaningful action.
We would particularly encourage events that align with some of our Race Equality Charter priorities for the year (reward, recognition, and progression of Black staff, or addressing the degree awarding gap).
Funding will be awarded to host local events or activities to a maximum of £200 with applications to be assessed by the race equality theme leads.
For guidance on how to run EDI events, please see our EDI events toolkit.
For any queries, please contact the EDI Coordinators at BR-EDICoordinators@exmail.nottingham.ac.uk.

The university’s Students’ Union are looking ahead to plans for Black History Month in October 2022.
During this annual celebration aimed at promoting and recognising Black contributions to society and understanding Black history, they aim to engage in this important conversation through a programme of events including a carnival, film screening, forum discussion on issues affecting students, and many more.
To close the month, they would like to host a guest to talk about their experiences, work, research, or other project they are involved in such as campaigning work or community project.
There is no theme to the celebrations, and the call is open to any topic a speaker is passionate about sharing. The aim of the talk is to develop the understanding and skills of our students as well as motivate them to act or get involved with local schemes and projects.
It is hoped that this talk will prompt conversations around change to continue and be acted upon; Black History Month is not something that should be reserved for one month only.
This event will be open and actively advertised to the entire student body and staff of the Union and university as part of Black History Month.
If you are interested in sharing your work or passion, please contact the Student Union’s Campaigns and Liberation Coordinator, Ginny.

The update ‘New guidance for university file storage’ published in last week’s all-staff newsletter (on 12/07/2022) was summarised in the ‘Staff News’ email as ‘all data stored within the S: (Shared) and R: (Research) drives must be moved to Microsoft 365 by Sunday 31st July 2022’.
This summary is not accurate, and we apologies for any confusion this may have caused.
As was stated in the full version of the update, available here, any data that has a specific performance requirement for onsite storage should remain in its current location.
The S: and R: Drives are not being discontinued, and will continue to be available to host data with these specific requirements.
Data appropriate to remain on the S: and R: drives includes:
If you have any questions, or need support to migrate your data, please fill out our enquiry form to get in touch with the project team.
To reiterate, the S: and R: Drives are a key part of the university’s storage provision, and they are not in danger or being decommissioned.
They will continue to be available to host data with these requirements. By removing data that doesn’t require this high-performance storage type, we can free up capacity on the S: and R: Drives for these types of files.
There is guidance available on choosing a storage platforms and migrating data available on the Storage Solutions SharePoint.
The Office365 SharePoint site has more information on using Microsoft 365, including how to store, collaborate and share data.
If you would like to speak to the project team, you can fill in our enquiry form. If you have questions about research data, you also might want to speak to your Digital Research Specialist.

This week (18-22 July), colleagues are attending the Farnborough International Air Show – marking a decade since the university began showcasing at this major international aerospace sector event.
In total there will be 60 representatives from the university attending.
This includes PhD fellows, researchers, senior programme and project managers, senior academics and student ambassadors, from the Faculty of Engineering and School of Computer Science.
They will be showcasing more than 13 aerospace, (additive) manufacturing, electrification, propulsion, space and security engineering research demonstrators – and in turn our strength in the breadth and depth of aerospace and space research – to prospective students and businesses alike.
The university’s attendance at the week-long show will help to reiterate our partnership with the Midlands Aerospace Alliance (MAA), with which the Institute for Aerospace Technology (IAT) is helping to support midlands SMEs to innovate and introduce new products and services to the marketplace.
Aerospace Unlocking Potential (UP) is a £20 million project that aims to support 355 business across 8 local enterprise partnerships (LEPs) in the midlands region.
