The University is celebrating LGBT History Month with a series of events celebrating its LGBT staff and research.
Film screenings, music and poetry readings, panel discussions and public lectures will explore the diverse aspects of LGBT culture and history — from local musicians and poets to debates on the public image of bisexuality and the participation of trans people in sport.
Key events throughout the month include:
A screening of the documentary Call Me Kuchu, which examines the lives of LGBT men and women — ‘kuchus’ — in Uganda, in the shadow of the country’s strict anti-homosexuality laws.
A talk by Bisi Alimi — Nigerian gay rights activist and HIV/LGBT advocate — follows the screening. Bisi was the first man to publicly come out as gay on Nigerian TV. He now lives in London.
LGBT musicians and poets will give short performances at Nottingham Central Library at this free event aimed at the whole family.
UoN history academics Dr Karen Adler and Dr Onni Gust introduce and discuss a screening of the documentary Bambi. The film profiles Marie-Pierre Pruvot, an Algerian-born trans woman who had a long career as a dancer and showgirl in Paris in the 1950s and 60s.
Dr Max Biddulph, Chair of the LGBTQ Staff Network and Associate Professor in the School of Education, and Professor David Brailsford of the School of Computer Science examine the life and work of Alan Turing in this public lecture.
The full events programme is available on the University’s LGBT History Month blog, which will be updated regularly throughout February with more detail about events, and blog posts from staff whose research touches LGBT culture, history, politics and health.
The majority of events taking place, both on campus and in the city and county, are free and open to all unless otherwise stated on the events posters. Many of the events will be live tweeted on Twitter from @UoNresearch. Follow the account for updates.
The events programme is a collaboration between the University’s HR and Professional Development departments, the LGBTQ Staff Network, and schools and departments across the institution.
Dr Max Biddulph, Chair of the University’s LGBTQ Staff Network, explains: “LGBT History Month is a great opportunity for the University to celebrate and highlight both our LGBT staff, and our research. We hope to give people a chance to learn more about LGBT issues, culture and history, challenge and debate their current thinking, and to be entertained.”

Professor Chris Rudd will take over as Pro-Vice-Chancellor and Provost at The University of Nottingham Ningbo China (UNNC) this summer.
He succeeds Professor Nick Miles OBE, who is returning to the UK after five highly successful years in charge of UNNC.
During his time at the helm, Professor Miles has overseen an expansion of the student body, developments in research capacity, new collaborations with business and government, and growth of the physical infrastructure of the University in Ningbo.
Professor Rudd, Pro-Vice-Chancellor for External Engagement since 2007, has extensive experience of senior academic management. As Professor of Mechanical Engineering, he has worked extensively with China’s emerging corporate sector to build long lasting partnerships that benefit both countries – meeting China’s needs for technology and talent and the western need for new markets.
Professor Rudd said: “UNNC is a unique and exciting place and I really feel honoured to be asked to help steer it through the next phase of its evolution. This is an opportunity to work with some inspiring people at an extraordinary time and I look forward greatly to working with our partners, staff and students to continuing making history in Ningbo.”
As Pro-Vice-Chancellor for External Engagement, he has brought many Chinese corporates into UK partnerships and taken technology transfer missions to many of China’s first and second tier cities – focusing on energy, aerospace, automotive, food and drink, creative industries, pharma/healthcare and financial services.
Professor Rudd has launched many high-value partnerships and created Nottingham’s Asia Business Centre to sustain those collaborations. He led Nottingham’s presence at the 2010 Shanghai World Expo and chairs the Nottingham Confucius Institute. He is also a Board Director of the China Britain Business Council and a guest Professor at Jilin University.
In 2013 he was awarded the Changbaishan Friendship Award(长白山友谊奖) by the Chinese Government. He is a regular speaker at Sino-UK business events, promoting partnership, transnational education and the role of universities in building cultural and economic bridges and supporting business growth.
As Pro-Vice-Chancellor and Provost, he will work with the senior management team to lead UNNC during its next phase of development.
The University has a dynamic internationalisation strategy and has taken a pioneering role in China, as the first overseas academic institution granted permission to set up a Sino-foreign collaborative university inside the People’s Republic. Since opening in 2004, UNNC has grown from 250 students to almost 7,000.
Professor Miles has been Pro-Vice-Chancellor and Provost since 2010 and will hand over formally to his successor on August 1, 2015.
Professor Miles said: “It has been an honour to have had this opportunity to lead UNNC through the past five years and to work with such great people. Our students and graduates are just fantastic and their ingenuity, enthusiasm and energy never ceases to amaze me in whatever they do; they are UNNCers!
“It has been a privilege working with such a great leadership team in helping shape and guide the University and having the support and guidance of President Yang Fujia, Mme Xu Yafen of Wanli Education Group and the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Sir David Greenaway.
“I’m really pleased to be handing over to Chris, who has a deep connection with China and with UNNC and who will lead this university to even greater achievements.”
Professor Yang Fujia, President of UNNC, said: “My heartfelt thanks go to Professor Miles for his excellent leadership over the past five years.
“I am delighted Professor Rudd has been appointed to lead UNNC through its next phase of development. UNNC will be in safe hands and I look forward to working with Professor Rudd in his new role.”
Professor Sir David Greenaway, Vice-Chancellor of The University of Nottingham, said: “This change in leadership comes at an exciting time for UNNC and our collaborations in China more widely. Nick’s visionary leadership will leave a lasting legacy for past and future generations of students and alumni, and a secure platform for Professor Rudd to build on.
“I am delighted Professor Rudd will be our new Provost. He is an experienced PVC with extensive knowledge of working in China. I am confident UNNC will go from strength to strength under his leadership.”

The Marketing, Communications and Recruitment department is welcoming two new teams over the coming months.
The Market Intelligence team joins with immediate effect. The team will continue to inform strategic decisions across the University as well as shaping the way we develop our offer. This allows for more targeted and informed approach to marketing and student recruitment across the institution
Admissions will join MCR from 1 March, building on the close relationship that has developed between Admissions and MCR over years of successful working together. The enhanced team will ensure our marketing and student recruitment activities are more focused and relevant to applicants, improving their experience of the enquiries and admission processes and making them seamless. By bringing greater alignment to our systems and processes and working more closely with Faculties, Schools and Departments, we can play a significant part in improving the student experience — from enquiry through to enrolment and beyond.
For more information on how we can work together to support student recruitment in your area, please contact your Faculty Marketing Manager or Nathalie Mortimer in MCR.

Following the extremely disappointing decision by Nottingham City Council not to approve our plans to build the new sports centre many staff, students and friends of the University will share a sense of frustration at this decision. However, we are now looking to the future and how we can ensure this important development goes ahead with all speed.
We are actively working with the City Planning Officers to develop an amended plan which will deliver our vision for the new sports village whilst preserving the three oak trees. We are aiming to submit this revised plan at the next planning committee meeting in February.
We are hugely disappointed that the changes we will have to make to the plans will unfortunately have adverse consequences for the University and will mean that we lose some of the environmental efficiencies which would have been delivered in the original plan.
This major investment is part of our ambition to create an outstanding, inspirational and accessible sports facility for all our students, staff and the wider community. It will enable us to attract more national and international events to the city, and this is why we are doing everything in our power to ensure this landmark development will go ahead.
It is not only important to the University, but it is also a vital investment to the city. With this in mind, we hope that the next Committee will be able to see the bigger picture.
