The Students’ Union has partnered with SPAR to reinvent its on-campus shops this Easter – don’t miss the official launch on Monday 18 April!
The change follows feedback in student surveys which found that students wanted a branded shop offering on campus. The new shops, in the Portland Building, University Park and the Exchange Building, Jubilee Campus, give students a much wider choice and better range of products, with offers being expanded to include healthier choices alongside more conventional student products.
The greatly improved shopping experience will hopefully encourage more students to shop there more regularly, as a selection of fresh produce, competitively priced ‘meal deals’ and healthy options are available. There will also be regular opportunities for the students to maximise their budget with carefully selected and targeted seasonal offers, offering choice and value for money that is comparable to other branded competitors. With these changes ensuring students are getting the best deals, student satisfaction with the SU Shops should improve dramatically over the coming months.
All profits generated by the shop are reinvested into the work of the Students’ Union. Kristian Bennett, Shops Manager said: “We have seen a definite shift in the attitude of the student population over recent years, with increasing importance being placed on opportunities to stay healthy, as well as great value for money. We’re excited about the new partnership with SPAR because it allows us to offer really great value, while also providing students with healthy alternatives that won’t break the bank.”
The new shops opened their doors for the first time on Tuesday 5 April and the shop has already seen a fantastic uplift in sales. A grand opening is scheduled to take place on Monday 18 April to coincide with the return of the students from their Easter break.
The grand opening will feature free stuff from Monster (energy drinks), Naked (coconut drinks), Propercorn (flavoured popcorn) and more, throughout the day. So make sure you don’t miss out on the freebies, and get yourselves down to the Portland Building on Monday 18th!

The University of Nottingham has paid tribute to the achievements of one of China’s oldest and most prestigious universities.
As part of celebrations for the 120th anniversary of the Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU), the Vice-Chancellor of The University of Nottingham, Professor Sir David Greenaway, was invited to address a Grand Assembly.
In his speech, delivered to more than 5,000 invited guests, he spoke of transnational collaboration, re-enforcing the bridge between East and West, as well as drawing links between the two universities.
He said: “In our world technology is changing everything; our really big challenges are genuinely global; distance and time zones are not the impediments they once were. In this world Universities are key ‘go to’ places. We know about change and transformation, it is encoded in our DNA; we can drive and mediate change; but, we too have to change.
“We have to become even more globally connected, not just through ever more rapid data transfer and the internet of things, but through more purposeful engagement that can only come from spending more time with each other.”
Next week SJTU, which is a similar age to The University of Nottingham, will celebrate a 10 year partnership with the University of Michigan.
Last year Nottingham celebrated the tenth anniversary of the University of Nottingham Ningbo China, this country’s first Sino Foreign University. Both universities are founding members of Universitas 21.

The University has announced new plans to increase its provision of welfare support for students and staff. This comes as part of the changes being brought about by Project Transform and will be implemented as part of GoLive 3.
The new plans will provide a consistent level of welfare support across all Faculties, the number of FTE APM 3-4 roles increasing from 10 to 20 across UK campuses. The roles will be based at a School/Faculty level and line-managed directly by APM 6 staff within Student Services, providing additional management input to the provision of welfare support for both students and staff. A detailed proposal can be found on the Project Transform Workspace (login required).
Students will be able to access welfare support at a local School/Faculty level and, from September 2016, will be able to book appointments through the new Student Service Centres if they wish to do so. The new roles will also offer welfare support to staff.
“I’m pleased to confirm the new plans for welfare support,” said Chris Hulse, Director of Student Services. “The proposal has been developed in collaboration with the Welfare Network and Claire Thompson, Head of Student Welfare, and I look forward to working together to see the positive impact that these changes will have on both students and staff at The University of Nottingham.”
Recruitment for these new roles will be taking place over the next month and the role information can be found in the following locations:
http://www.nottingham.ac.uk/jobs/currentvacancies/ref/LDSS002
http://www.nottingham.ac.uk/jobs/currentvacancies/ref/LDSS003
Recruitment is restricted only to staff in-scope for Project Transform at this time.
