As you will know, Sir David Greenaway retires as Vice-Chancellor at the end of September, having served our University in that role since 2008.
Sir David’s tenure as Vice-Chancellor is the culmination of a thirty-year commitment to the University of Nottingham and he has led the institution with great distinction at a time of profound change in UK and international higher education.
We know that many colleagues will want to thank Sir David for this commitment and a number of you have asked how to make a gift in recognition of his service. In discussion with Sir David we have identified two areas that will provide valuable support to students and which resonate with him personally.
The two programmes are:
The Greenaway Scholarships, focused on Nottingham and the East Midlands
Sir David has led the University at a time of profound change in higher education while maintaining Nottingham’s position and reputation. He has also been a strong and compelling advocate for widening participation and the University’s role in supporting education in the region, not least through the University’s innovative Nottingham Potential programme. The Greenaway Scholarships aim to remove financial barriers for ambitious students from low-income families who reside in Nottingham and the East Midlands.
The Sir David Greenaway Sports Scholarships
Our Sport Scholarship programme will allow the University to drive our sporting vision and elite ambitions, and establish Nottingham as a first choice for students looking to combine a high-quality education and an excellent sporting experience. Furthermore, it will help cultivate a culture of performance sport encouraging all students to aim high and achieve their potential. Your support will help us to recruit and develop the highest level of sporting athletes and open the door for them to compete in the world’s most prestigious competitions, while continuing to achieve their full academic potential.
Should you wish to support either or both of these programmes then please give online or contact Andrew Legge in the Campaign Office for information on other ways to give.

The first Maternity/Adoption/Shared Parental Leave focus groups have taken place, following up on some of the feedback gained from the Athena SWAN survey earlier this year.
32 staff and line managers from across the institution have attended so far. Attendees have rated the groups highly and enjoyed making their contribution. At times it was a challenge to bring some of the interesting conversations to a close!
Flexible Working was one topic which generated much discussion. The HR team are planning to implement guidance on Flexible Working in September.
We’d like to thank everyone who made time to come and contribute. The insights and ideas gained have been valuable and will shape the Athena SWAN Action Plan to support both staff and line managers better in this area.
It is clear from the feedback captured in August, that one action in response should be an improved Maternity Checklist to prompt discussion and action, to help both the staff member and line manager navigate the way from pregnancy/adoption placement to returning to work.
Further focus groups at QMC, Sutton Bonington and Derby are planned for October and November, for both staff and line managers.
All the feedback captured will be used to shape a long term action plan to address these issues.

Before she left to take up her new post as Vice-Chancellor of the University of Kent, Professor Karen Cox reflected on her career at the University of Nottingham in a recorded interview with the Human Resources’ People & Culture team.
In the interview Karen speaks about why equality, diversity and inclusion (EDI) are important to the University; the positive work-life balance that supported her career; and the role senior colleagues played in encouraging her to take advantage of opportunities.
“Believing in people and helping them to be the best they can be is such an important part of the leadership role”, she says.
Cuts of her interview will be hosted in a number of places to raise the profile of EDI as an important part of our future culture and support us both to attract talent and to develop future leaders. You can view a clip below.
In a longer cut, hosted on the Athena SWAN Workspace page, she speaks about the importance of Athena SWAN to the University. A clip showing Karen’s career journey can be viewed via the Leadership & Management Academy webspace. The webspace also includes the video above in the Learning and Resources section.
The University’s LinkedIn page and YouTube channel show clips of Karen speaking on equality & diversity, her career, and her “top 3 things” that she appreciated most about working at UoN, helping to attract our “100 brightest minds”.
This is the start of our talent attraction journey, as we are starting to think about why people want to work for the University of Nottingham and what our offer is to people. Staff can contribute by telling us their own career story, their understanding of what attracts people to come to work here or their ideas for other ways we can champion the University as an employer.
Please email hr@nottingham.ac.uk if you would like to contribute.
Additionally, Karen gave a talk to the Women’s Network, as she was looking ahead to taking up her new role as Vice Chancellor of the University of Kent. This was a very personal account of how her career developed at the University and how she balanced the personal and professional aspects of her life. You can view a lecture-capture recording on the Women’s Network Workspace page.
If you would like to attend future Women’s Staff Network Events, please get in touch by email.

The University of Nottingham has won the ‘University of the Year’ accolade at the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) Awards 2017.
The MSC is an international non-profit organisation. Its vision is for the world’s oceans to be teeming with life, and seafood supplies safeguarded for this and future generations. Its ecolabel and certification program recognises and rewards sustainable fishing practices and is helping create a more sustainable seafood market.
The MSC’s annual Awards recognise UK retail and foodservice businesses that are helping to transform the world’s oceans to a sustainable basis – and in 2017 the University of Nottingham has won the MSC University of the Year Award for serving the most MSC certified seafood to its students.
“As one of the first universities to achieve MSC certification in 2012, it is great to see the University of Nottingham leading the way when it comes to supporting certified sustainable seafood,” commented Stefanie Siebels, MSC UK Commercial Officer.
“Nottingham serves more MSC fish to its students than any other university, which goes a long way to help protect fish stocks for future generations. That’s why we named it the MSC University of the Year.
“Students are some of the most environmentally conscious consumers so it’s fantastic that the University of Nottingham is helping them make choices that have a positive impact on the world’s oceans.”
The MSC ecolabel on a seafood product means that it comes from a wild-catch fishery which has been independently certified to the MSC’s science-based standard for environmentally sustainable fishing, and that it is fully traceable.

A colleague from the School of Biosciences has been awarded National Teaching Fellow Status in this year’s Higher Education Academy (HEA) National Teaching Fellowships.
The prestigious accolade was awarded to Dr Fiona McCullough in recognition of her outstanding work in dietetics training and development for healthcare professionals.
National Teaching Fellows (NTFs) are selected from across mission groups and from a broad range of subject areas. The NTFs were nominated by their institutions with submissions being required to show evidence of three criteria: individual excellence, raising the profile of excellence and developing excellence.
Dr McCullough and her team delivered the first programme of postgraduate dietetics education in 2006, when ad hoc study days for clinical educators were delivered to help support and enhance the quality of placement provision.
In 2008, a post-registration skills-based training funding route was made available for registered healthcare professionals wanting to continue their learning journey. This helped to fund a regional portfolio of flexible learning opportunities including stand-alone study days, 20 credit M-level modules and degree awards. The outcome was a bespoke “pick and mix of CPD” for each dietitian, a career development resource that is unique to the East Midlands.
Dr McCullough said: “I was absolutely delighted to receive this award and consider this a very special milestone for the fantastic team that I am part of, as well as being an external quality kite mark for our programme. Demand for the training has spread rapidly due to the reputation for high quality teaching and effective applied learning, and it is now used by full time national and international students, as well as local ones. Forty full time students have now successfully completed the full time MSc programme. The international graduates are now pushing up standards in healthcare and dietetic practice in at least 10 countries across the world. We are very proud of the fact that dietetics at Nottingham is recognised as a strong and unique brand.”
HEA Chief Executive, Professor Stephanie Marshall, said, “A National Teaching Fellowship is the most prestigious individual award for excellence in teaching in higher education. These awards represent a fantastic achievement by all 55 new NTFs. I am sure the whole sector joins me in applauding them in their success.
“The new NTFs represent some of the very best teaching in higher education and I am sure they will inspire others as we share their innovative practice and ideas across the sector. The UK is justifiably proud of its higher education sector and its reputation is enhanced by the examples of excellent teaching highlighted by these awards.”
