The University of Nottingham has once again risen up the rankings in a national league table.
The Times and The Sunday Times Good University Guide 2018 will be published on Sunday 24 September, featuring profiles on 131 UK universities. This year Nottingham features at number 18 in the table, a rise of two places since last year.
In a year of high achievement that saw it shortlisted for the University of the Year Award for the second successive year, the University was named among graduate employers’ favourite recruiting grounds and featured as the top Russell Group university in The Economist’s analysis of average graduate salaries in comparison with their expected levels.
Dr Paul Greatrix, Registrar at the University of Nottingham, said: “Nottingham has long been recognised as one of the world’s top universities for the quality and breadth of our teaching and research.
“This year the TEF Gold rating, our research investment, and data showing our graduates earn more than other university graduates, continues to underline this recognition. We’ve seen very positive results in this year’s tables which is an indication we are getting things right and we will continue to work hard to improve the experience we offer our students.”
Alastair McCall, editor of The Sunday Times Good University Guide, said: “Shortlisted for our University of the Year award for the second successive year, Nottingham is long-established as one of the “go to” destinations for undergraduates. It proves it is possible to excel at both teaching and research, and significant effort has been expended in recent years to provide a student experience commensurate with the university’s status.
“A pioneer in establishing international campuses, which provide students with excellent opportunities to study abroad in high-quality academic environments, Nottingham has also upgraded extensively at home also. The new £40m David Ross Sports Village is the latest iconic facility to come on stream.
“Other university awards have a special prize for university leadership. We don’t, but it would be remiss not to mention the role of Professor Sir David Greenaway, Nottingham’s outgoing Vice-Chancellor, in shaping the present University of Nottingham. As he retires, he leaves an institution we are confident will continue its upward trajectory in our rankings – and more importantly will continue to make a compelling offer to students in an increasingly crowded higher education marketplace.”
The new University Guide has also rated Nottingham as the best university for agriculture and forestry in the UK.
The league table is made up of nine indicators including student satisfaction with teaching quality and their wider student experience, research quality, graduate prospects, entrance qualifications held by new students, degree results achieved, student/staff ratios, service and facilities spend, and degree completion rates.

The University of Nottingham Volunteer Awards are held every year to celebrate the impact of our inspirational community of volunteers — and help us say a big “thank you” to those who give their time.
We have five award categories this year, each designed to recognise the amazing actions and efforts our volunteers make to enhance the University experience of our students, transform the lives of those in our local communities and make positive difference to the wider world.
Do you know someone who has gone above and beyond the call of duty to help others?
Whether they have volunteered for free on boards, spoken at careers events, been a mentor, provided mock interviews or given guidance for entrepreneurs, we’d love to hear about it!
Nominations are now open and welcomed from all current staff and students. The closing date for nominations is Sunday 1 October.

The Nottingham Reading Programme launches once again next week — with the University giving all new students the opportunity to pick up a free copy of Brave New World, by Aldous Huxley.
The books are special editions customised especially for the programme, which aims to give students something to talk about in their first weeks at university.
New students based in catered and self-catered halls will receive the books in their accommodation, and new students based in private accommodation will have the opportunity to pick up a copy from one of our libraries or from Blackwell’s bookshop in the Portland Building.
The Nottingham Reading Programme is supported by Impact: the Nottingham Campaign and was launched in 2015.
It’s designed to provide students with a conversational ice-breaker as they settle into a new place, encourage reading for pleasure and ultimately build a sense of community among new students by providing a shared experience.
Students will be encouraged to share their thoughts on the book, and see what others think, using the hashtag #UoNFreshers.
Later in the term, reading groups will be set up to bring students together to discuss Brave New World. We’ll be announcing the dates of the reading groups shortly.
We are inviting staff across the University to help support this initiative, by organising reading groups and encouraging students to get involved. If you’d like to host a reading group, you can find guidance on the Nottingham Reading Programme webpage.

Runners from the University of Nottingham — including staff, students, alumni, friends and members of the community — will take part in the Robin Hood Mini, Half and Full Marathon this weekend to raise money for the Children’s Brain Tumour Research Centre.
Over the last few months the University has been busy recruiting runners to join its marathon teams and raise money for the Centre — this year’s chosen Impact Campaign charity.
The team had set out to look for runners of all abilities to sign up for the challenge in an attempt to hit the marathon fundraising target of £40,000. So far, over 200 personal fundraising pages have been set up by members of the University’s ‘UoN 500 Runs the Robin Hood’ team.
The Robin Hood Marathon has been held in Nottingham every year since 1981, and last year saw more than 10,000 people take part in the three races combined.
This year’s edition of the popular annual marathon will take place on Sunday 24 September. Starting and finishing from Victoria Embankment, the runners of the full 26-mile route will take in some of Nottingham’s most historic and scenic sights, including Nottingham Castle, Wollaton Park, the National Water Sports Centre and University Park Campus.
Pro-Vice-Chancellor for the Faculty of Science, Professor Kevin Shakesheff, who organised the team and the Robin Hood Marathon fundraising campaign, says:
“It’s fantastic that so many staff, students, alumni and friends of the University have taken up the challenge of running the Robin Hood for Life Cycle 7.
“The training organised by the staff at the David Ross Sports Village has been very popular and there has been a real community feel to the team as it has grown.”
This year, Life Cycle 7 will mark the 20th year that the Children’s Brain Tumour Research Centre has been at the forefront of leading research and the University wants to raise £500,000 to celebrate this momentous milestone.
Anybody who wishes to donate to this weekend’s runners can do so via the ‘UoN 500 Runs the Robin Hood’ JustGiving pages.
The overall Life Cycle 7 fundraising page can be found here.

Universitas 21 is offering up to US$ 40,000 (around £30,500) in funding to support initiatives that will have a positive impact on staff and/or students within its network.
Proposals are welcomed for projects, initiatives and events that would be held in 2018, to align with the 21st anniversary of Universitas 21 — the leading global network of research-intensive universities from 16 different countries, working together to promote global citizenship and innovation through research-inspired teaching and learning, student mobility, connecting staff and students and wider advocacy for internationalisation.
Proposals are welcomed from both staff and students. All academics, professional services staff and students within U21 institutions will be able to bid for a share of the fund, with U21 looking to support as broad a range of projects as possible.
As a general guide, it is anticipated that the maximum funding allocated for any individual bid will be $5,000 (around £3,800) however larger amounts will be considered — particularly if the proposal demonstrated wide institutional cooperation and impacts on staff/students from more than one U21 member.
To be considered for funding, a project must demonstrate that it:
Please note: Student projects require a member of staff to act as an advocate who can oversee the projects funding and expenditure. Students must also provide proof that a member of staff has authorised the proposal by submitting a cover note from their advocate with their proposal.
This is a great opportunity to celebrate U21’s 21st anniversary by demonstrating the value that U21 offers staff and students by making a difference to their day-to-day experience.
U21 will also use the opportunity to celebrate the success of the network and increase its profile within member institutions and the wider international Higher Education community as a whole. All applicants will be asked to deliver a short report on their project, if possible a short video, which will be included in communications surrounding U21@21 and may be shared online via the website and social media.
If you would like to apply for funding, please download a Funding Application Form from the Universitas 21 website. Ideas should be submitted to Gail Armistead in the Office of Global Engagement by Tuesday 31 October for consideration to be included in the Nottingham-nominated projects.
All projects which are successful at this first stage will then be submitted to Universitas 21 by the UoN Office of Global Engagement with senior leader support. Overall successful applicatants will be informed by the end of November.
