The University of Nottingham has won the ‘University of the Year’ accolade at the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) Awards 2017.
The MSC is an international non-profit organisation. Its vision is for the world’s oceans to be teeming with life, and seafood supplies safeguarded for this and future generations. Its ecolabel and certification program recognises and rewards sustainable fishing practices and is helping create a more sustainable seafood market.
The MSC’s annual Awards recognise UK retail and foodservice businesses that are helping to transform the world’s oceans to a sustainable basis – and in 2017 the University of Nottingham has won the MSC University of the Year Award for serving the most MSC certified seafood to its students.
“As one of the first universities to achieve MSC certification in 2012, it is great to see the University of Nottingham leading the way when it comes to supporting certified sustainable seafood,” commented Stefanie Siebels, MSC UK Commercial Officer.
“Nottingham serves more MSC fish to its students than any other university, which goes a long way to help protect fish stocks for future generations. That’s why we named it the MSC University of the Year.
“Students are some of the most environmentally conscious consumers so it’s fantastic that the University of Nottingham is helping them make choices that have a positive impact on the world’s oceans.”
The MSC ecolabel on a seafood product means that it comes from a wild-catch fishery which has been independently certified to the MSC’s science-based standard for environmentally sustainable fishing, and that it is fully traceable.
