The School of Life Sciences and School of Physics and Astronomy have become the latest UoN schools to successfully renew their Athena SWAN Charter awards.
Both of the schools have been granted a Silver Athena Swan award – signifying their work to promote gender equality and address related challenges.
The Athena SWAN Charter works to advance gender equality in all its forms in relation to academic roles in all disciplines, professional and support staff and trans staff and students — in relation to their representation as well as the progression of students into academia, the journey through career milestones and the staff working environment.
By gaining Athena SWAN awards — which are overseen by the Equality Challenge Unit — the schools have shown that they are committed to adopting a number of recognised principles within their policies, practices, action plans and culture.
Silver awards recognise that Schools have changed working practices to address issues they have identified. Further, it shows that they have demonstrated the positive impact these changes have had on multiple aspects of staff and student experience and career progress.
Speaking about the University’s latest Athena SWAN achievement, Marion Walker, Associate PVC for Equality, Diversity and Inclusion, said:
“My sincere congratulations to the Schools of Life Sciences and Physics and Astronomy on their recent successful Athena SWAN Silver awards.
“Athena SWAN silver awards are highly prestigious and testament to the significant commitment from each school to embed the Athena SWAN principles within their day-to-day work. These awards recognise the considerable efforts addressing workplace barriers for all genders which the University of Nottingham is fully committed to resolving.
