Two University of Nottingham professors have been shortlisted for the 2017 Newton Prize; an annual fund awarded for research or innovation that supports the economic development and social welfare of developing countries.
Professor Michèle Clarke and Professor Malcolm Bennett are in with the chance of winning up to £200,000 from the Prize to be used to advance or further develop work in these areas:
Commenting on the shortlisting, Professor Dame Jessica Comer, Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Research and Knowledge Exchange, said:
“To have the two of the University’s researchers shortlisted for the 2017 Newton Prize is hugely exciting and rewarding. Professors Michèle Clarke and Malcolm Bennett are not only world leaders in their respective fields; their collaborations with our partners in India show how the University of Nottingham’s international partnerships increase the impact of our research, and influence the development of societies facing key challenges – in this case building resilient cities and sustainably feeding growing populations.”
The Newton Prize — which provides a total of £1m in funding annually — is part of the broader Newton Fund, which builds research and innovation partnerships with 18 partner countries to support their economic development and social welfare, and to develop their research and innovation capacity for long-term sustainable growth. It has a total UK Government investment of £735 million up until 2021, and each partner country provides matched funding and resources for every programme, making it an equitable partnership.
More than 150 Newton funded projects, fellowships or other awards applied for the Newton Prize from the eligible countries for this year — India, Malaysia, Thailand and Vietnam. There are 25 shortlisted applications in total and five Prizes of up to £200,000 will be awarded to each winner to be used to advance or develop existing Newton funded work. There will be two winners in India and one in Malaysia, Thailand and in Vietnam.
All of the Newton Prize winners for 2017 will be announced in November. The prize winners for India will be announced on Wednesday 1 November.

The People and Culture team would like to thank everyone who has made time to come and contribute to the focus groups taking place on maternity/adoption/shared parental leave.
So far, 49 people from across the University have participated in the focus groups. The insights and ideas gained have been valuable and will shape the Athena SWAN Action Plan to support both staff and line managers better in this area.
Initial responses and further actions
It is clear from the feedback captured in August that one action in response should be an improved Maternity Checklist to prompt discussion and action, to help both the staff member and line manager navigate the way from pregnancy/adoption placement to returning to work.
As a result of this feedback, an improved Maternity/Childcare Leave Checklist is under development, to prompt discussion and action, to help both the staff member and line manager navigate the way from pregnancy/adoption placement to returning to work.
Additionally, we are looking to identify dedicated spaces to support employees and students breastfeeding or expressing breast milk should they prefer to do so in a private location. These spaces will be designated as Athena SWAN Parenting Rooms. Look out for more information in December.
If you would like to test one of the rooms, or would like to provide comment into the development of the Maternity/Childcare Leave Checklist, please contact peopleandculture@nottingham.ac.uk.

The University of Nottingham is launching its annual ‘Brighten Up’ campaign to encourage staff and students to be safe and be seen when cycling in the autumn and winter months.
From Monday 23 October – Friday 27 October 2017 we’ll be holding a series of events across our UK campuses. The events will feature RideWise instructors who will be able to give advice on lighting, hi visibility clothing and cycling in the damp and dark.
Staff and students attending the events will also be able to collect hi visibility equipment and free lights provided by the University and Nottinghamshire Police.
Here are the details of the events. There’s no need to book – just turn up on the day!
Speaking about the Brighten Up campaign, Gavin Scott, Environment Manager at the University, says:
“We see more and more students and staff cycling around our campuses and around Nottingham. It’s vital that cyclists remain safe, especially when the clocks change and the nights get darker. We are pleased to continue to run this annual event and hope that it will help to keep people safer and feeling confident on their bikes.”
To find out more about keeping safe when cycling in the autumn and winter months, you can also watch our video.
RideWise also provide cycle training across Nottingham through their cycle centres, group training and one to one support. For more information, visit the RideWise website.

On Friday 27 October, a bid will be submitted for Nottingham to become European Capital of Culture 2023 — will you lend your support and help our city in its drive to win the designation?
The European Capital of Culture is granted to a city for a period of one year. The team bidding for Nottingham to achieve the status in 2023 has proposed a ‘cultural change’ programme that will transform the lives of people in the Midlands.
The more pledges of support that Nottingham receives, the stronger its bid will be to be chosen as European Capital of Culture 2023.
On submission day, the team behind the bid will be aiming to get #Nottingham2023 trending on social media. To help with this, at least 500 people will need to post about #Nottingham2023 at the exact same time in order to create a social media ‘thunderclap’ that will raise awareness of, and lend weight to, Nottingham’s bid.
To get involved in the Thunderclap — and help get #Nottingham2023 trending on Twitter — sign up to the campaign at http://thndr.me/gCsYQX.

Last week, the University of Nottingham was delighted to welcome delegations from member institutions of the European Consortium of Innovative Universities (ECIU). It’s the first time we have hosted colleagues from the consortium since becoming an ECIU member at the start of this year.
The ECIU is the leading international consortium of research intensive universities, with collective emphasis on innovation, creativity and societal impact, driving the development of a knowledge-based economy.
Our membership of the ECIU signifies that we hold a strong commitment to innovation and entrepreneurship. It also demonstrates that we are drivers of the regional development and innovation agenda, that we provide excellence in research, and more.
The first meeting of the week, on Tuesday 10 October, saw us welcome Professor Thom Palstra, the Rector Magnificus of the University of Twente, and representatives of the University of Twente’s Students Union. The group met with University of Nottingham academics to discuss topics such as internationalisation, Brexit, research management our Beacons of Excellence. They also met with their counterparts at our Student Union.
Later in the week, a meeting of the Entrepreneurship and Societal Impact of Research (ESIR) group took place involving some 14 representatives from the member institutions of ECIU.
And finally, on Thursday 12 October we welcomed our final ECIU visitors of the week — The Vice Rectors of Research — who met with us to discuss our research and expertise in Aerospace, discussions on talent management, academic workload and ECIU projects.
Speaking about Nottingham’s role in the ECIU, Professor Nick Miles, Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Global Engagement at the University of Nottingham, explained:
“The University of Nottingham is a pioneer in international education. Like ECIU we believe that innovation, creativity and societal impact can drive growth and we have enjoyed the opportunity to share best practice with our international colleagues this week.”

As you’ll be aware the University has recently gone through a brand refresh. Over the next two years we will be implementing a strong, bold and confident brand and identity for our University that is true to our heritage and, at the same time, firmly focused on the future.
Brand website
With the support of staff we have made great progress since the launch earlier this year, and our new branding can be seen across the campuses and online. To help support the roll-out of the brand, this month we launch a dedicated brand website.
The brand site will help to inspire and inform internal and external audiences about the University’s brand and how to work with it to create impact and consistency.
Tools and resources
The site replaces and builds on the brand pages on Workspace with easy access to tools, resources and a gallery of useful examples of our brand in action. It will also allow users to self-serve and it will give regularly updated, easy access to key assets including our logo.
Information that is only relevant for an internal audience will remain on Workspace behind a log in. Links through to the site are now live on Workspace and redirecting visitors through to the brand site.
Take a look at the brand site here, and if you have any questions please contact the Corporate Marketing team via brand@nottingham.ac.uk
Thank you for your support and we look forward to hearing your thoughts and feedback on the site.
