The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR)

May 29th, 2018

The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) is now law and is going to change the way we work.

Below are some of the ways you can inform yourself of what the GDPR and Data Protection Act (DPA) 2018 mean for you:

  1. Watch the GDPR podcast. If you need something more in-depth, attend the face-to-face An Introduction to GDPR training session.
  2. Have a look at the University’s updated data protection policies, procedures and guidance so you can start to understand how GDPR will affect the way you work.
  3. Look at the University’s Privacy Notices. If you are a student at the University or a member of its staff, you should have received the one that refers to you by email already. Please read the Privacy Notice Procedure (on the GDPR Workspace) so you can be sure you know how and when you might need to use a Privacy Notice.
  4. Further information is available on the GDPR Workspace, including a Getting ready for GDPR information sheet.
  5. The Information Compliance Team is there to support you at data-protection@nottingham.ac.uk.  The University has a Data Protection Officer, Simon Gill, who can be contacted on dpo@nottingham.ac.uk.

Look out for further information over the coming months as more online training is made available and we start to come out and work with you on translating GDPR into your day-to-day working lives.

All policies and procedures will also be available on the University’s main website shortly.

Strategy for Development-Focused Research and Innovation Funding — workshops

May 24th, 2018

*UPDATE: Due to high demand, a third Theory of Change Workshop has been scheduled on Wednesday 20 June 2018. Please see update below.*

Theory of Change Workshops have been scheduled for researchers who wish to apply for funding under the Strategy for Development-Focused Research and Innovation.

The workshops are for researchers seeking to undertake research with countries on the DAC list, under funding guidelines that are official development assistance (ODA) compliant.

This funding is new activity under the 2018-2021 Strategy for Development-Focused Research and Innovation and a number of internal funding calls will be launched before August. These new schemes will be funded via the Global Challenges Research Fund (GCRF) element of QR from Research England.

In order to be eligible for these internal funds, applicants must evidence that they have attended a Theory of Change workshop. This is a critical guideline for future ODA funding from research councils and a requirement for applicants to the internal funding calls.

For the first set of funding calls, there are two workshops available to attend. These workshops will take place at Vaughn Parry Williams Pavilion, Highfields Sports Complex, University Boulevard at the following times:

Volunteers needed for UG open days

May 23rd, 2018

Our next undergraduate open days will take place on Friday 29 June and Saturday 30 June, across all three UK campuses.

These flagship University-wide recruitment events are designed to give students and their families the best experience possible, as they visit to find out more about life and study at the University of Nottingham and consider which universities to apply for.

We rely on a huge number of staff and students to enable the open days to run smoothly. Our staff and student ambassadors are central to the success of the days and from feedback we know that they make a positive difference to our visitors’ experiences.

This year, we need to increase the number of staff ambassadors on site to ensure we have sufficient people to guide and direct our visitors. Are you able to help out?

Duties will include:

  • staffing information points
  • overseeing venues with talks
  • being a first point of contact and liaising with the Events team on any issues or problems during the day
  • assisting visitors at Nottingham train station/tram stop
  • supervising student volunteers
  • directing visitors/helping with accessibility issues

The standard hours of work for open days are between 8am – 4pm with variations and morning/afternoon session for those who are part-time.

Please seek your line manager’s permission before signing up and complete the online form by Wednesday 30 May.

The form asks staff to sign up for a briefing date, so please keep a note of which briefing you have signed up to attend. There are versions for those who have worked an open day before and those who have not. You will also be asked to attend a staff training session (1 hour max) and a final briefing the week prior to the Open Day (30-45 mins). These are obligatory for all staff, whether you have helped on open days before or not, as arrangements change from year to year. Details regarding the final briefing will be confirmed closer to the date.

If you have any queries relating to the events, please contact the student recruitment events team.

Brexit Update: PM speech sets out some detail about future access to EU research

May 22nd, 2018

With the proviso that, as ever with anything to do with the Brexit negotiations nothing is certain until everything is certain, in a speech at the Jodrell Bank Observatory in Cheshire on Monday, Prime Minister Theresa May continued recent hints that the Government would like to associate fully with Horizon Europe, the successor programme to Horizon 2020, and that it would be willing to make an appropriate financial contribution to do so.

While nothing remains confirmed, the language of “full association” implies a specific status similar to that enjoyed by countries such as Israel, Armenia, Turkey, and the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia. May’s proposed position is to “willingly pay” a contribution, with the hope of enjoying a commensurate level of influence over funding programmes.

May’s speech also filled in some more detail on the Industrial Strategy, highlighting “Grand Challenges” as specific areas of investigation including four around data for health, aging, zero-emission transport, and sustainable building practice. No new money announced alongside these, but the hint was that the governmental goal of research and development investment reaching 2.4 per cent of GDP by 2027 “could translate to an additional £80 billion investment over the next decade.”

The Russell Group issued a robust statement calling for the Government to ensure that the UK continues to be a global leader in science and innovation.

Help out at summer graduation

May 22nd, 2018

Graduation is one of the most exciting times on campus, and each year we rely on a huge team of University staff and volunteers to help make it a memorable occasion for our students. Graduation will take place from Thursday 12 July – Friday 20 July this year and we need staff volunteers to join us as stewards at these ceremonies.

Approximately 30 stewards are needed for each of the 21 ceremonies. This is a great opportunity to see students celebrate the culmination of their studies.

Stewards will be asked to help with:

  • welcoming guests and students
  • guiding guests and students to their seats
  • sign-posting guests to key activities
  • making arrangements for guests with individual requirements
  • answering queries and helping with problems on the day

How to volunteer

Please check the list of the dates and times for ceremonies. Before registering your interest, please check that you have the approval of your line manager. You can then complete the online form.

No previous experience is necessary. We welcome both returning stewards and those who have never stewarded before.

If you have any questions, please contact graduation@nottingham.ac.uk.

Nottingham Student Experience Survey results 2017

May 21st, 2018

The results of 2017’s Nottingham Student Experience Survey are now available and the University has received an overall satisfaction rating of 93%, a result which demonstrates consistency with the rest of the Russell Group.

The results highlight a lot of areas where students have a particularly positive experience. The average waiting times for an offer of study have reduced significantly since the 2016 survey, and students report having a particularly positive experience with the Students’ Union, clubs and societies, the Health Centre, and the Graduate School.

Responds’ feedback also indicates that we have a lot of work to do around improving the arrival experience. The Student Transitions Task Force — led by Andy Winter, Campus Life Director, and Clare Gough, Director of Student Services (Student Development) — is already looking at ways to improve this, and has been consulting with students and staff.

Professor Sarah O’Hara, Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Education and Student Experience, said: “An overall satisfaction result of 93% is a fantastic response and something that we should all be very proud of. At the same time, the results of the NSES have highlighted a few areas where we might need to focus our attentions to ensure that we maintain high levels of satisfaction across the board. The University of Nottingham is a fantastic place to live and study, and I’m pleased to see this reflected in our students’ feedback.”

Staff can view and analyze the full breakdown of results in the Tableau Server, which can be accessed with your University username and password. This allows you to interrogate the results of the survey across the University, or by campus, faculty, or school/department level. Alternatively, a presentation is available from iGraduate, who run the survey on our behalf.

Further assistance with Tableau

Tableau Server is the new platform for the delivery of Tableau content. It no longer requires you to download Tableau Reader and has a number of additional features such as the ability to customise your opening view of the data. If you follow the link above and have any identity or access issues, please contact the IT Service Desk via https://selfservice.nottingham.ac.uk or 0115 95 16677. (However, please note that the service is currently only available on-site or via a VPN.) For any other queries, please contact analytics@nottingham.ac.uk.
