University of Nottingham is the new home for Asda Foundation Nottingham 10k

January 30th, 2019

The University of Nottingham is delighted to be announced as the home of the Asda Foundation Nottingham 10k for the next three years — and is calling on supporters to sign up and run this year’s event.

The 10k has a special connection with its new home as Run For All is a legacy of the late charity fundraiser Jane Tomlinson CBE, and helps raise money for the Nottingham Breast Cancer Research Centre at the University Of Nottingham.

Jane, despite being diagnosed with an incurable cancer, completed a series of incredible endurance events to fundraise for cancer charities.

This year’s event will take place on Sunday 16th June and the new route will take place almost exclusively on one of the UK’s most scenic university campuses, taking in Nottingham’s iconic Highfields Park boating lake.

Mike Tomlinson, Jane’s husband and Chief Executive of Run For All said: “Our partnership with the Nottingham 10k is very personal for our family because we feel a debt of gratitude to the city and its health institutions.”

“We’re always going to try and raise money for the Nottingham Breast Cancer Research Centre. The blood tests they’re developing are leading the way in hopefully making Jane’s dream a little bit more of a reality. This partnership and the money it will raise hopefully means we’re fulfilling Jane’s wishes.”

The partnership will see £5 of every entry donated to the Nottingham Breast Cancer Research Centre.

Director of the Nottingham Breast Cancer Research Centre, Professor Stewart Martin, said: “We’re really excited the University will be hosting the Nottingham 10k. Research happening here at the University is aimed at detecting breast cancer early, stopping it spreading and treating it right. Every pound raised by runners choosing to support our Centre will be used to help find the next breast cancer breakthrough.”

Dawn Broomfield, Community Fundraising Manager at the University of Nottingham said: “Since the Nottingham Breast Cancer Research Centre launched early last year we have been overwhelmed by the support received from university staff, students, patients and members of the community. Amongst other things, supporters have run, baked and cycled to raise valuable funds and we would be so grateful if people continue to support us by signing up for this year’s Nottingham 10k and choosing to raise funds for the centre.”

To sign up for the 10k and fundraise for the Nottingham Breast Cancer Research Centre visit www.runforall.com/events/10k/nottingham-10k.

*Entry for UoN staff and students will be reduced to £20 until the end of February and a number of charity places are available for runners who can raise over £100 for NBCRC. Contact dawn.broomfield@nottingham.ac.uk from your university email address for a discount code or to register for a charity place.*

Periodic Table celebrations have Nottingham in its element

January 29th, 2019

The International year of the Periodic Table was launched today (Tuesday 29 January 2019) in Paris — and the University of Nottingham has revealed some exciting plans to celebrate this scientific milestone.

The University of Nottingham is creating a Nottingham version of the Periodic Table, featuring recognisable landmarks, sayings, and people from the city. The completed Nottingham Periodic Table will be unveiled at this year’s Wonder event on 15 June 2019.

As previously announced, Wonder 2019 will also be themed to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the Periodic Table — a call for activity proposals is open until Friday 15 February.

Another highlight of the celebrations will be a guest lecture on Wednesday 13 March 2019 by Russian nuclear physicist Yuri Oganessian – the only living person to have an element named after him (Oganesson – No 118). Further details of this lecture will be announced soon.

Celebrating the 150th anniversary of the creation of the periodic table was an idea sparked by Sir Martyn Poliakoff from the School of Chemistry, who says: “Dmitrii Mendeleev’s first publication of his Periodic Table was in 1869 and, a couple of years ago I casually suggested that the 150th anniversary might be a good opportunity for a global celebration of chemistry. The idea caught people’s imagination and a bottom-up push was enough to ignite widespread enthusiasm. With much effort from a number of people the idea became a reality.

“Approval by the UN and UNESCO was necessary to mobilize government support for national chemical societies across the globe. Now, with this support, chemists at all levels, of all nationalities, and of all ages are seizing the opportunity to put on a bewildering range of events to celebrate our most iconic scientific tool.”

Sir Martyn is a special guest at the launch ceremony of the International Year of the Periodic Table at UNESCO in Paris where he will give the audience a peek inside his world with a visual tour of his office where the Periodic Table is on display in many forms.

To help mark the celebrations, Sir Martyn and the Periodic Videos team will also be making some special videos for the Periodic Table of Videos.

Nottingham Periodic Table – have your say!

We’re asking people to get involved and help us create the Nottingham Periodic Table, by providing suggestions of Nottingham-related replacements for the chemical elements. (For example Fr – Friar Tuck, Pa – Paul Smith, Eu – ‘Ey Up Mi Duck’.)

Want to have your idea featured? Send us your suggestions by completing this form: https://www.nottingham.ac.uk/chemistry/nottingham-periodic-table.aspx.

Simply Cups recycling scheme launches at David Ross Sports Village

January 28th, 2019

The Club House at David Ross Sports Village (DRSV) is becoming the first place on University Park able to collect disposable hot drink cups to recycle.

The process of recycling single-use hot drink cups is typically hard to achieve in part due to difficulties separating the paper outer and plastic lining of the cup. (Find out more on our WasteNott FAQs.) However, the launch of the Simply Cups scheme at DRSV’s Club House will enable the recycling of single-use cups disposed of at the dedicated collection point – even if they were purchased elsewhere around the University.

In support of the WasteNott campaign, the Club House café at David Ross Sports Village will be charging an additional 20p per disposable hot drink cup and will continue to offer a 20p reduction for customers who bring their own reusable cup. Hot drinks are also available at the advertised price in china mugs to be enjoyed by customers who chose to sit in.

The 20p additional charge at the Club House café goes directly into funding the Simply Cups recycling scheme. Be sure to place your used coffee cups into the separate bins provided in the Café so your cup can be recycled responsibly!

The Simply Cups scheme at the Club House is being launched at an event on 11.30-1.30pm, Monday 28 January 2019. To celebrate the launch, the UoN sustainability team has joined forced with the Department of Sport, Sodexo, PlayerLayer and Enva (our waste management company) to give away a range of prizes and sustainable products on the day.

Attendees will also be able to take part in games and learn more about initiatives to encourage sustainability at the University of Nottingham, including the WasteNott waste reduction campaign.

Placement programme launches for Midlands’ university technicians

January 25th, 2019

A new placement programme has launched for university technicians to enable them to exchange skills, share experience and best practice.

Technicians play a vital role in universities. The work that they do, usually unseen, enables teaching, research, knowledge exchange and outreach activities to take place.

The Technical Skills Placement Programme, introduced by Midlands Innovation to support technical staff working across institutions in the region, will provide technicians with an opportunity to work with technicians at other universities on a short placement, in order to develop their skills and make new contacts that can provide support and advice to help them in their future technical careers.

Speaking about the Programme, Kelly Vere, Director of the Technician Commitment, said: “The Midlands Innovation Placement Programme is an innovative initiative that aims to drive the professional development of technicians across the Midlands. It’s fantastic to see universities working together in support of the Technician Commitment and their technical communities”.

Dr Helen Turner, Director of Midlands Innovation, added: “Over the past three years the Midlands Innovation partnership has embarked on a programme of activities designed to increase the visibility of our technical workforce, to recognise excellence and to think about collaboratively supporting their career development. Technicians are vital in ensuring the success of our universities and research institutes, providing academic, research and student colleagues with the essential technical expertise that they need to enable their research and teaching.”

Midlands Innovation represents eight universities in the region, in which over 2,100 technicians are employed, providing a diverse range of technical expertise. All members of the Midlands Innovation partnership are founding signatories of the Technician Commitment; a sector wide initiative led by the Science Council and supported by the Gatsby Charitable Foundation’s Technicians Make It Happen campaign. The Commitment aims to ensure visibility, recognition, career development and sustainability for technicians working in higher education and research, across all disciplines.

The Technical Skills Placement Programme is open to any technician, of any grade from across the member universities. Funding covers travel, sustenance and accommodation.

Applications for the programme are welcome directly from technicians, or from managers who would like their staff members to learn or experience a particular technique or skill.

For more details and to download the application form visit this page: http://www.midlandsinnovation.org.uk/programmes/technical-skills-placement-programme.aspx

Applications close on Wednesday 20 February 2019.
