Campus News
June 17th, 2019
We are very sorry to inform colleagues of an instance of robbery on the University Park campus in the early hours of this morning, Monday 17 June.
Two male students were approached by three men who took items including a bag and mobile phone. The students received injuries during the robbery, which were not life-threatening but required hospital treatment, and they are receiving full support from our student welfare teams.
Campus security teams are supporting Nottinghamshire Police with their enquiries and reviewing CCTV footage to identify the offenders. In the meantime, police and our campus security teams are mounting additional patrols to assure safety, and are reviewing lighting and CCTV provision.
Staff and students are being advised to take sensible precautions if studying or travelling around campus late at night, and follow our standard safety advice, in particular:
- walk with friends
- tell someone where you are
- keep to well-lit areas
- conceal any valuables on your person
Police are appealing for anyone with information on the incident to contact them on 101, quoting incident 35 of 17 June 2019.
Please be assured that our campus remains a safe place to study and the chances of becoming a victim of crime or anti-social behaviour are very low.

University of Nottingham Libraries is upgrading the library self-service machines and security gates.
The new security gates will make your library resources even safer, and the new self-service machines will make it faster and easier to borrow books.
Features of the new machines include:
- Flat surface to place your books
- Technology that allows you to process multiple books at once
- Language options if English isn’t your preference
- Automatic e-receipts to reduce paper waste
- Self-service machines on levels 3 and 4 in Hallward – so you won’t have to go downstairs to borrow or return items
To reduce any disruption caused by these changes, the improvements will be carried out after exams and over the summer break.
For those who will be using the library during this time, installation will be carried out over the following key dates:
- Hallward, Monday 17 – Tuesday 18 June
- Denis Arnold, Wednesday 19 June
- Greenfield Medical, Thursday 20 June
- Business Library, Friday 21 June
- George Green, Monday 24 – Wednesday 26 June
- James Cameron-Gifford, Thursday 27 June
- Djanogly Learning Resource Centre, Monday 1 – Wednesday 3 July
Library users will be able to get in and out of the libraries during this period, but there may be a short period of time where books should be borrowed or returned at lending desks rather than using the self-service machines. There may be some disruption in the form of dust and noise during this time, but this will be kept to a minimum.

On Thursday 13 June a number of emails were sent from University of Nottingham Libraries containing outdated information – please ignore these emails.
The system responsible for distributing Library emails has not been working since Saturday 1 June.
This problem has now been resolved. Unfortunately, the system has distributed the backlog of borrower summary emails that has built up since the malfunction.
As a result, if you borrow books from the library, you may have received two borrower summary emails today containing out of date information. Please ignore these – an up-to-date email will be sent to you on Monday 17 June.
Any fines incurred on books due to be returned between Friday 7 and Monday 19 June 2019 will be waived on account of the recent lack of Library emails.
If you’re unsure about the status of your loans, you can check your library account on NUsearch for an accurate picture of your current loans. If you do have any concerns, please contact the library helpline at library-helpline@nottingham.ac.uk or on 0115 951 6393.
We apologise sincerely for any inconvenience or concern caused.

The Asda Foundation Nottingham 10k is coming up on Sunday 16 June – it’s taking place on campus with proceeds going towards cancer research and improving the lives of people with cancer.
Thousands of runners are expected to take part in the event, which will see £5 of every entry going to the Nottingham Breast Cancer Research Centre (NBCRC) and all further profits supporting the work of the Jane Tomlinson Appeal across the UK.
The race will be started by Tim Pollard (Nottingham’s official Robin Hood), who will also be running/walking for the NBCRC. The race will be taking place two years to the day that Tim’s wife, University of Nottingham colleague Sally Pollard, sadly died of breast cancer. Dressed in his role as Robin Hood, Tim will be joining the runners to fundraise along the way and will be wearing our Vest on a Quest.

Best wishes to all who are involved in the 10k and helping to raise funds and awareness.

The University of Nottingham’s public arts programme, Nottingham Lakeside Arts, has received funding from the Office for Students between 2019-2022 to support diversification and graduate retention in the creative industries sector.
£293,315 was awarded from the Office for Students’ Challenge Competition fund for a collaborative project to support the delivery of an annual Creative Pathways programme.
The funding will enable a three-year Creative Pathways programme, with two strands of delivery for students from backgrounds underrepresented in Higher Education. These two strands are paid internships for recent graduates, and the delivery of a ‘Creative Academy’ for undergraduates.
The Creative Academy will provide an introduction to the breadth of careers available in the Creative Industries and will feature talks by inspirational thought-leaders in the creative sector, workshops with visiting creatives, and opportunities to engage with regional cultural sector leaders.
Creative Pathways Graduate Internships will be introduced across seven of the city’s cultural partners — City Arts, Dance4, Nottingham Contemporary, Nottingham Playhouse, Nonsuch, UNESCO City of Literature and Lakeside Arts — with applications opening on 10 June 2019.
The programme and internships begin in early October 2019 – with the first Creative Academy event on 15 October 2019 — and organisers will be working closely with the University’s Widening Participation and Careers & Employability teams to identify eligible students.
Shona Powell, Director of Nottingham Lakeside Arts, said: “We are delighted to receive this new tranche of funding which will enable us to build on our enormously successful track record of operating externally sponsored internships.
“We’ve seen a number of previous Lakeside interns go on to occupy leadership positions and all are clear that their internship was integral to develop vocationally-relevant practical skills and sector-relevant knowledge, helping them to secure permanent positions within the creative industries.
“This generous backing will allow us to upscale our internship programme and to create a collaborative learning community, and encourage new and exciting opportunities to retain graduate talent in our region.”
Students can apply via the Careers and Employability webpages.

The University of Nottingham is celebrating three Queen’s Birthday Honours this week.
Professor Melanie Leng, Professor of Isotope Geoscience in the School of Biosciences, who is also Chief Scientist for Environmental Change Adaptation and Resilience at the British Geological Survey, has been awarded an MBE for services to environmental research.

The honour recognises her work as Director of the Centre for Environmental Chemistry, a collaboration between the University of Nottingham and the British Geological Survey where she heads a specialised laboratory researching environmental and climate change, human impact on the environment, food security and resource management.
Part of the Centre for Environmental Geochemistry has recently been commissioned by NERC (Natural Environment Research Council) as a national facility to provide geochemistry expertise and collaboration to the UK’s environmental research community and especially as a training facility for young environmental scientists.
Professor Leng said: “I am delighted to be awarded an MBE, which recognises my work on behalf of the University of Nottingham and the British Geological Survey.
“I have been fortunate in my career to collaborate with some fantastic scientists who have worked with me on environmental issues including understanding past environmental and climate change from natural archives such as soils and lake sediments and understanding how conditions on Earth have and are changing due to human impact on the environment.
“Over the last few years we have established the Centre for the Environmental Geochemistry – a collaboration between the University of Nottingham and the British Geological Society – which is a growing brand recognised for research in the environmental sciences.”
Harminder Dua, Professor of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences, in the University’s School of Medicine, has been awarded a CBE for services to eye healthcare, health education and ophthalmology.

Professor Dua’s most famous contribution to ophthalmology was his research group’s discovery of a previously undetected layer of the human cornea in 2013. His work to develop our understanding of this Pre-Decemet layer – also dubbed Dua’s Layer – has already informed three new surgical techniques and made lamellar corneal transplantation safer.
He served as co-Editor-in-Chief of the British Journal of Ophthalmology and is a past president of both EuCornea and the Royal College of Ophthalmologists. He was made Honorary Fellow of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists in September 2018.
Professor Dua said: “I was thrilled to receive this great honour, which was not something I expected. On reflection, this is clearly a recognition of the multitude of individuals from amongst my family, friends, colleagues and students, who helped me reach where I am. I am proud to be part of the University of Nottingham and the Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust.”
Congratulations also to Rosie Tressler on her award of OBE for services to mental health in higher education. A Nottingham alumna and former Student Union Equal Opportunities and Welfare Officer, Rosie is CEO of Student Minds, with whom the University is collaborating on the recently announced Office for Students-funded project to develop a sector-wide approach to supporting the mental health of international students.
