Read only version of Moodle now available

December 8th, 2019

The University is continuing to experience IT issues. Information Services are treating this as a priority and have been working through the weekend to restore Moodle as soon as possible.

A temporary read-only version of Moodle is available at moodle-rc.nottingham.ac.uk, giving you and your students access to some of your learning and revision materials while we continue to work on restoring full access to Moodle.

The temporary read-only version of Moodle will allow you and your students to look at documents and resources. However, students will not be able to submit assignments or post to discussions, and some links and activities will not be available.

Anything you or your students submit or change will not be saved in this read-only version, and will be unavailable when the full live version is restored. This includes quizzes, which can be completed for revision purposes. However, answers will not be saved. Talis reading lists are still available via Moodle.

The read-only version is based on the content in Moodle at 5.50pm on Wednesday 4 December. This means that any changes that you or your students made in Moodle from this time on Wednesday will not be visible in the read-only version.

Colleagues who need advice about read-only Moodle should contact the Learning Technologies team at learning-technologies@nottingham.ac.uk

We appreciate that these issues may have an impact on coursework submission deadlines. Students have been informed that they will not be penalised for late submissions.

Please accept our sincere apologies for the disruption. Updates are available at status.nottingham.ac.uk. The next update will be at 11am on Monday 9 December.

New University Strategy published

December 6th, 2019

A commitment to join the city of Nottingham in its ambition to become carbon-neutral by 2028 and work in China and Malaysia to improve sustainability is just one of the stretching ambitions in the new University Strategy published today.

You can read more about the Strategy in a new blog by Deputy Vice Chancellor, Professor Andy Long who has led the work on its consultation and development.

In the first of a series of blogs on “what the Strategy means to me,” Director of Development and Sustainability Andy Nolan writes about the Strategy’s carbon-neutral aims and how we might achieve them.

Vice-Chancellor Professor Shearer West said:

“I am delighted that this University Strategy is one that has been constructed from the views of the staff and students that make our University what it is. Together we can achieve its goals to build an institution that is as sustainable in its environmental impact as it is in the excellence of its research, teaching and contributions to society.

“In a complex and rapidly changing world, our vision is to be a university without borders, where we use our mission, values, relationships and expertise to benefit communities at home and across the globe.”

Built from more than 26,000 items of feedback from staff and students across our campuses in the UK, China and Malaysia, the Strategy articulates a core vision and set of values that are shared across our global community.

In summary, the Strategy sets out seven strategic goals to guide the work of our faculties, schools, professional service and support areas:

  • solving problems and improving lives through education, research and knowledge exchange of the highest quality;
  • supporting potential by recruiting students and staff with the highest potential and desire to succeed and support them to achieve their goals;
  • developing the campus experience by cherishing the natural environment, providing spaces that support the wellbeing of the community, and developing online resources, continuing professional development and lifelong learning;
  • cultivating a global mindset by providing an international experience for everyone, deepening our international partnerships, and mobility opportunities for students;
  • fostering creativity, discovery and experiment by equipping our students to be innovators, and developing incentives to ensure people are empowered to experiment without fear of failure;
  • contributing to United Nations sustainable development goals through our research, education and engagement with partners, and supporting Nottingham’s desire to be zero carbon by 2028;
  • embedding collaboration in all that we do to become a university without borders, reaching out to our civic partners, industry and governments and collaborating across internal boundaries.

The new University Strategy will replace Global Strategy 2020 when it concludes at the end of the current academic year 2019/20. Supporting delivery plans in key areas such as our research, teaching, people and estate will be published across the remaining year to support our community in implementing the Strategy and reflecting its aims in team business plans and individual objectives.

No car parking in Main Visitor’s car park – Wednesday 11, Thursday 12 & Friday 13 December

December 3rd, 2019

Due to the recent period of wet weather, grassed areas on campus that would normally be used for car parking at events like graduation have become saturated and water-logged.

To make sure everyone attending a ceremony has access to convenient parking, we’re closing the Main Visitors car park on Wednesday 11, Thursday 12 and Friday 13 December.

The car park will be exclusively open to anyone attending a graduation ceremony, but will also remain open to staff, students and visitors who hold a blue badge.

Members of staff who would normally use this area for parking may want to consider alternative travel arrangements for getting to and from the University, including tram, bus or cycling.

People who need to use their vehicles to get to the University during graduation ceremony days should use alternative staff car parks located in the Central and Science Site areas of University Park Campus.

Security staff will be on duty during the graduation ceremonies and will be able to help out with advice and support for anyone with questions.

Risk management policy and framework document launched

December 2nd, 2019

The University recognises and accepts that it will be exposed to a number of risks in the normal course of operation and in pursuit of its strategic objectives. Appetite for those risks will vary and be dependent on the activity type and the potential impact or reward.

It is essential that risks whether they are at a school, faculty, professional services department (PSD), project or programme level are understood and managed effectively.

By identifying, assessing and pro-actively managing risks, the University will be better placed to manage threats and be able to take advantage of opportunities to achieve its strategic objectives whilst protecting the reputation of the University.

To help everyone understand the requirements of managing risk, our Risk Management Policy and Framework document (Workspace login required) has been updated.

This applies to all University of Nottingham enterprise risks, academic units, administrative functions, sites and operations, including programme and projects and is effective immediately. The updated document brings together all relevant content in one place providing a comprehensive, clear and consistent guide to risk management requirements across the University.

What does this mean for me?
If you’re responsible for risk management in your faculty, PSD, programme or project you’ll need to create or update your current risk register to reflect the new requirements. We appreciate that this might take some time, so please aim to complete the transfer by the end of April 2020.

The University Level Risk Register , which details the significant risks currently faced by the University at a global level, is being updated and will be available in January 2020.

If you have any queries or questions, please contact Senior Risk Adviser, Mike Early.

Briefing sessions for staff – Nottingham Reward Scheme

December 2nd, 2019

The HR team are arranging a series of one-hour briefing sessions across our UK campuses throughout January 2020 for people to find out more about the Nottingham Reward Scheme.

The Nottingham Reward Scheme

The Nottingham Reward Scheme was launched earlier this year and has been developed in partnership with staff, following contributions from more than 450 colleagues across the University.

  • Is a flexible, four-tiered performance related reward scheme, with rewards ranging from vouchers to consolidated(incremental) rewards
  • Gives opportunities for self nominations, manager nominations and colleague nominations
  • Has various points in the year for nominations and rewards to be applied.
