Support for Ukraine – University to end all formal links with Russia

March 10th, 2022

The University of Nottingham condemns the actions of the Russian government in the strongest possible terms. As a university, we are bound by the values of human rights, democracy and international law that are currently being violated by the Russian government’s aggression in Ukraine. We stand in solidarity with the people of Ukraine and call on the government of Russia to desist its invasion and the violation of the human rights of civilians in the country.

The University Executive Board has determined that the University of Nottingham will end all formal links with universities in Russia, including current research projects, bilateral agreements, memoranda of understanding and any projects currently under development.

Vice-Chancellor Professor Shearer West said:

“The university is taking this unprecedented step in response to the Russian government’s invasion of Ukraine. Academic links between universities across the globe can be vital in promoting peace and understanding, and many Russian scholars and students will oppose this war.

“However, I am deeply concerned by the statement issued by the Russian Rector’s Union which offers its universities’ unequivocal support for the invasion of Ukraine – you can read a translation here. I am also mindful of the decision by the European Commission to suspend co-operation with Russian entities in research, science and innovation. Germany, Denmark, the Netherlands, Latvia and Lithuania have independently suspended academic cooperation with Russia.”

Humanitarian support

As well as ending formal links with universities in Russia, the university is exploring how we can enable students and postgraduate researchers from Ukraine to study with us in the UK and for affected academic staff to continue their research, either via the Council for At-Risk Academics (CARA) or possibly our own scheme.

The university is actively looking to repurpose unused buildings to provide Ukrainian refugees with accommodation and support under the government’s Homes for Ukraine scheme. The Veterinary School is also part of a network of UK vet schools acting as regional hubs to collect medicines, bandages, and humanitarian aid for Ukraine.

The university has contacted staff and students in our community who are directly impacted by recent events to offer support for their wellbeing and to alleviate the undoubted pressures on them at this time. We would ask that all staff and students continue to follow our shared values of inclusivity and respect for anyone who is affected.

Support for staff and students

Students can contact our Support and Wellbeing Service for support with their mental health and wellbeing, either on their own behalf or if they are worried about another student. The Home Office has confirmed that Ukrainians who are on study visas in the UK will have their visas temporarily extended or be able to switch onto different visa routes. Full details are available here. If you are experiencing financial difficulties, please contact the financial support team via an online appointment  or call 0115 823 2071.

The Employee Hub gives staff access to our employee assistance programme providing free confidential support, over the telephone (0808 168 2143) or on-line 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Please also speak to your line manager about any other support or flexibility you may require.

Charity appeals

Should you wish to donate to organisations that are currently providing humanitarian support in Ukraine:

  • The British Red Cross is working to support people in Ukraine. Donations to the Red Cross go towards food, water, first aid, medicines, warm clothes and shelter.
  • UNICEF is working across eastern Ukraine to deliver life-saving programmes for children as well as deliver safe drinking water.
  • The UNHCR  is working with local authorities and other partners in Ukraine to provide humanitarian assistance for refugees.

University’s Safeguarding Policy reviewed and updated

March 8th, 2022

The university’s Safeguarding Policy has been reviewed, updated and approved by Senate on Tuesday 1 March 2022.

The policy is based on the principle that everyone has the right to work, learn and achieve their potential within a safe environment, without risk of harm from abuse, discrimination, harassment, assault or bullying, in all its forms and in any circumstances.

We are taking a whole-university approach to our policy and practice, embedding a culture of safeguarding in everything we do and ensuring that safeguarding is seen as everyone’s responsibility.

It is therefore essential that all staff are aware of the policy, how you might identify safeguarding concerns and what you should do about them.

Alongside the policy, there is a new UoN Safeguarding Resources SharePoint site, which includes the policy and a range of supporting information for all staff and volunteers.

The university will be working over the next few months to further develop the resources, update our training programme and develop a network of safeguarding leads.

Emma Rowsell is the new Director for Student and Campus Life and will be the University Designated Safeguarding Lead, with responsibility for the management and oversight of safeguarding concerns across the university.

If you have any safeguarding concerns, please see the information on what to do if you have safeguarding concerns for the details on who to contact, including the generic email address br-safeguarding@exmail.nottingham.ac.uk.

Staff and students can also raise concerns and request support through the university’s Report & Support system.

Tackling food waste with Too Good to Go

March 7th, 2022

The university has teamed up with Too Good To Go to tackle food waste.

Every day, unsold fresh food goes to waste at cafes on our campuses. Whilst this waste is minimal, it adds up over time and now is instead being offered to staff and students at a discounted price.

Globally more than one third of all food produced is wasted. This is a staggering environmental problem. If food waste were a country it would be the third largest emitter of greenhouse gases, behind the US and China. Climate experts agree that reducing food waste is one of the most important things we can do to address global warming.

That’s where Too Good To Go comes in. This app lets students and staff buy food that would otherwise go to waste at a great price. For every ‘Magic Bag’ of food rescued through the Too Good To Go app, we’re helping to save 2.5kg CO2e.

You won’t know exactly what’s in your Magic Bag until you pick it up – it’s all part of the surprise – but we aim to include £12-£15 of RSP goods and sell these bags at £4.

How does it work?

To get started download the Too Good To Go app for free. Once your registered you will see all the outlets local to you that are signed up. Then simply purchase a Magic Bag through the app and collect it within the allotted collection window.

At the university, collections are available at:

  1. Coates café
  2. Hipps Café QMC
  3. Hallward Library
  4. Hemsley
  5. George Green Library

We are also working to roll this out at Sutton Bonington, Jubilee and other cafes across our campuses.

Be aware that there are currently no options to select specialist diets – it is an app based program to reduce food waste rather than a menu selector program.

After a month of being trialled, the university has saved 96 Magic Bags. This is equal to 240kg of CO2e, enough to charge a smartphone from 0 – 100% 42,480 times.

Find out more

During Food Waste Action Week (7 – 13 March) we are hosting a webinar and Q&A with Too Good To Go for you to find out more. Learn more about Too Good To Go at the university, how it works, and why food waste is such a big environmental issue.

Join in 12pm – 12.30pm, Thursday 10 March on Teams.

An Immersive Film Festival is coming to Nottingham

March 4th, 2022

This March, a new immersive film festival launches across a number of cultural organisations in the city.

Delivered in partnership between Nottingham Contemporary, Broadway Cinema, Nottingham Playhouse and the University of Nottingham; Light After Dark Film Festival: Cinema of Dreams and Shadows is a film festival dedicated to immersive experiences in cinema. Pairing films with performance, music, technology and art to give audiences a deep, intimate, and collective encounter with film.

The festival will run from 25-27 March 2022 across the city and explores the idea of how we experience film and derive memories, understanding and experience from it. The festival will be about dreaming, together.

Events will include a screening of the Fritz Lang classic Metropolis (1927) with a live score from local band 8mm Orchestra at Broadway Cinema, Facades, a unique film noir experience in Virtual Reality at Nottingham Playhouse, and a roundtable about how cinema (as ritual) is a medium for articulating dreams and accessing our unconscious with the University of Nottingham, which is providing a team of creatives, technologists and researchers to help realise and document the Festival Director’s ambitious creative vision.

On Saturday 26 March, Nottingham Contemporary will host A night at the end of the world. You are invited to a dream. It’s a club where chorus girls dance, old movies swirl above like memories, and fortunes are told. Drinks flow and music sways, but amidst the glitter there is sweet melancholy: the world ends at midnight.  Join in for an immersive and interactive cinematic experience that blends film, performance, live music, and other happenings.

Nottingham Contemporary is coordinating the festival, which is supported by the BFI Film Audience Network.

Tickets are now available via lightafterdarkfilmfestival.com.
