Changes to Amazon delivery addresses

April 26th, 2022

The university is trialling a change to the delivery process to prevent parcels from getting lost or damaged and to improve your experience using Amazon Business.

To address the on-going issues of Amazon parcels not being delivered to the correct location and couriers struggling to find locations/departments due to the lack of information on purchase orders,  we will be trialling a new delivery method.

From Sunday 1 May 2022, all Amazon Business orders for either University Park or Kings Meadow Campuses (KMC) will be delivered to two locations.

There will currently be no changes to deliveries made to Jubilee or Sutton Bonington Campuses.

All deliveries that are going to the L2 Stores in the Faculty of Engineering will remain unchanged. Please select the following delivery address:

L2 Stores
Faculty of Engineering
University of Nottingham
University Park
Nottingham
NG7 2RD

For all other Amazon Business deliveries to University Park or Kings Meadow Campus, these will now be made to the KMC Mailroom.  The Mailroom will  then contact you by email to either arrange delivery or collection from KMC.  When placing your Amazon order, you will need to select the following delivery address:-

Amazon Business
University of Nottingham
Mailroom
Kings Meadow Campus
Lenton Lane
Nottingham
NG7 2NR

Deliveries  from the Mailroom may take up to 2/3 days, therefore any urgent orders will need to be collected from the KMC Mailroom.

Should you need to contact the mailroom, please do so by emailing bw-mailroom@exmail.nottingham.ac.uk

This process will be reviewed over the coming months, so should you have any feedback regarding the process please email BB-Procurement@exmail.nottingham.ac.uk.

Using USB devices safely at the university

April 26th, 2022

The university is reminding all staff to be careful when using USB devices and not to store personal or sensitive data on them unless they are fully encrypted.

USB sticks and pens are very convenient for fast access to frequently used items like presentations.

But because of their small size they are one of the things that most often gets dropped, lost or left plugged in to laptops.

Because of this our advice is never store any personal or sensitive data on a USB device unless it is fully encrypted, this means that if you lose it or leave it behind then no one else can access any of the data that is on the device.

The university has obligations placed on us under UK GDPR to make sure we are taking all reasonable measures to keep our data safe, and this extends beyond pcs and laptops.

Peripheral items such as USBs can be purchased through DTS and can be found through the usual ordering channels.

For more Information Compliance and Security advice please visit the Information Security Sharepoint Site.

Invitation: research culture workshops 16-26 May

April 26th, 2022

An update from Professor Dame Jessica Corner

I am delighted to invite you to join the next stage in our ambitious project to transform research culture at the university.

Research culture workshops take place between Monday 16 and Thursday 26 May.

Sign up for a research culture workshop

These one-hour, open discussions will explore emerging themes and findings from our research culture survey and help us plan interventions that positively influence our working environment and change how we behave.

Each workshop is open to all colleagues and will be held via Microsoft Teams.

For those yet to take part in our research culture surveyI encourage you to share your insights and experiences.

To support our workshop discussions, we will issue attendees insights into the survey findings so far.  We would be grateful if you could read this before attending the meeting.

Your help in supporting the survey and the workshops will truly make a difference and help build a picture of how research is experienced and supported at Nottingham.

Please also look out for updates on further opportunities to contribute.

Read Dame Jessica’s full update

Did you register for a workshop before midnight on Thursday 5 May?

Due to a glitch on the MS Form we are using for workshop registrations we did not capture the names of those registering up to midnight on Thursday 5 May. This in turn means that we are unable to send invitations to any of the colleagues who registered. Sincere apologies for this situation and the impact on you and other colleagues.

We can confirm the glitch has been rectified and registration is now capturing people’s names.

We are very sorry, but we have to ask anyone who has registered for workshops before midnight on Thursday 5 May to re-register for the workshop via this MS Form.

Greater openness for Nottingham research: changes to repository licences

April 22nd, 2022

Find out about the upcoming licensing changes to publications in university repositories beginning in May 2022

Over the last twenty years, the university has become a significant publisher of the outputs of research.

As of 22 September 2021, the scale of open research across University of Nottingham repositories included:

  • 30,945 articles/conference papers
  • 2,088 books/book chapters
  • 2,375 data deposits
  • 5,027 e-theses

Current licensing arrangements

Our repositories (previously ePrints and now RIS) have always offered various licensing options for authors to choose from when depositing their research outputs. However, during this process authors have often declined to select a particular licence and as a result, many outputs are under very restrictive licensing terms.

This especially hinders commercial organisations that may be our knowledge exchange partners. Some outputs are only available on a basis of “all rights reserved”, in line with UK copyright law. This severely limits scope to copy and adapt previous work as new findings emerge, even in non-commercial research settings.

Funding bodies and licensing

Many funding bodies believe that permissive licensing of outputs underpinned by grants will maximise the reach and impact of research. Consequently, this has become a key condition of much grant funding.

UKRI, the Wellcome Trust and NIHR all require journal articles to be published with a Creative Commons Attribution (CC BY) licence. The CC BY licence allows works to be shared and adapted with appropriate attribution.

Upcoming changes to licensing for university research publications

In response to these trends, and to align with the university’s core strategic value of openness and “championing the free exchange of ideas”, University of Nottingham Libraries will be taking the following steps to enhance the reuse potential of the publications in our repositories.

  1. All outputs which were migrated to RIS by 2018 and are associated with the ePrints generic licence will transition to CC BY licence terms
  2. All outputs deposited in RIS since summer 2018 with no licence specified will transition to CC BY licence terms, subject to consultation with their University of Nottingham authors
  3. Where in future a University of Nottingham author does not choose to associate a licence with a new output at the point of deposit in RIS, CC BY licence terms will be applied by default.

Libraries will begin making these changes and contacting authors from May 2022.

If you have any questions about these changes or what it means for your research outputs, please contact the Libraries team at openaccess@nottingham.ac.uk.

Trent building to turn orange for Stephen Lawrence Day

April 20th, 2022

The university’s iconic Trent Building will light up in orange on Friday 22 April 2022 in commemoration of the death of Stephen Lawrence.

Friday 22 April commemorates the life of Stephen, a young Black British teenager who in 1993 was murdered in a racist attack in London.

The Stephen Lawrence Foundation works to continue to influence attitudes towards race; and the journey to restore trust and eliminate racism across Britain is ongoing. #ALegacyofchange

The Foundation will be illuminating several key landmarks in orange on Friday, including the London Eye, National Maritime Museum and the Cutty Sark.

The University of Nottingham will be joining civic partners Nottingham Trent University (Newton Arkwright building) and Nottingham City Council (Council House) in the commemoration event.

All colleagues and students are encouraged to engage in the light up by taking pictures/videos and posting them on social media using the hashtag #ALegacyOfChange.

Please visit the  Stephen Lawrence Foundation for more information.
