Scholarship programme launched to support at-risk Ukrainian students

May 16th, 2022

The University of Nottingham has launched a new funded scholarship to support at-risk students from Ukraine. Successful applicants will have access to accommodation on our UK campuses, as well as financial support, allowing them to study in a safe, supported environment.

The University of Nottingham Ukrainian Scholars at Risk programme provides a full package of support enabling eligible Ukrainian undergraduate and postgraduate taught students displaced by the Russian invasion of their country to continue their studies at UoN.

Our partner university in Ukraine – the Dnipro National University of Railway Transport – is supporting us in identifying at-risk UG and PGT students at their institution who are eligible for the programme.

We are also providing a full fellowship and consumables award through this programme to PhD students, where we are able to support and supervise their work.

Post-doctoral researchers and academics at risk can access accommodation and other financial support through the UoN scheme and through the British Academy’s Researchers at Risk Fellowships.

Members of the university community who may know Ukrainian academics at risk are encouraged to visit the UoN Ukrainian Scholars at Risk Programme page and make an application before applying to the British Academy web pages.

Applications to the postdoctoral research and PhD scholarships element of the UoN programme are currently closed.

Students supported through this programme will get access to the full suite of academic and wellbeing support services at the university – from careers and study support to health services and counselling. We will also help recipients build contacts and support networks with the Ukrainian community in Nottingham.

The package will provide a financial award and other support, which includes:

  • course fees for undergraduate and postgraduate taught students
  • a full fellowship and consumables award for eligible PhD students
  • a consumables award for eligible postdoctoral researchers
  • accommodation
  • living stipend
  • visa and immigration health surcharge costs
  • travel to Nottingham
  • priority access to UoN wellbeing services

The programme will be administered through two strands:

  • postgraduate research students, delivered solely via CARA
  • undergraduate and postgraduate taught students, delivered with our partner university in Ukraine, Dnipro National University of Railway Transport (DNURT)

David Ouchterlonie, Associate Director in the university’s Global Engagement Strategy Support Unit said: “We have the facilities, accommodation and funds to offer Ukrainian students at risk a safe, supported environment in which to continue their work and studies.

DNURT has a long-standing teaching relationship with the university, and we have the mechanisms in place to provide targeted, meaningful support to our partners and friends. We look forward to welcoming these students to a new home and community on campus and in Nottingham.”

The Scholars at Risk programme is designed to support Ukrainian students. However, it may be used beyond the current crisis to support students at risk of displacement in all conflicts.

All general enquiries about the University of Nottingham Ukrainian Scholars at Risk programme should be directed to the UoN Global inbox – uonglobal@nottingham.ac.uk.

British American Football star Oyelola pauses law career for NFL glory

May 16th, 2022

Rising UK American Football star Ayo Oyelola has switched the court room for the world’s biggest sports stadiums, winning a professional contract within the National Football League (NFL).

The Nottingham law graduate has been announced to the Jacksonville Jaguars NFL roster and will start training with the side later on this week following completion of medicals.

The 23 year old defensive line backer only took up the sport five years ago during his time at the University of Nottingham, from whose Law School he graduated in 2020.

Oyelola is amongst four players to have been allocated to NFL teams as part of the league’s International Pathway programme and follows in the footsteps of super stars such as Washington Commander’s Efe Obada. Focussing full-time on the sport since his graduation, the determined athlete has overcome a series of challenges, including a complete freeze on sporting action during the pandemic to make it to the world’s highest profile sporting league,

A promising athlete from a young age, the East Londoner had been linked with several professional football clubs. However at 18 years old, faced with a choice between pursuing a career in football or continuing his education, Oyelola chose to pursue his lifelong dream of graduating from law school.

“My parents were really focussed on education, but ultimately they trusted me to make my own decision and supported me with what I wanted to do. I’d visited the University of Nottingham in sixth form as it’s a top global law school and was really impressed by the world-class sporting facilities there.” Oyelola explains.

It was during his time at Nottingham, that American Football first caught the talented sportsman’s eye. Browsing online, he spotted You Tube highlights of New York Giant’s star Saquon Barkley and was instantly inspired.

“I’d taken a short break from sport and finding American Football filled that void – it gave me my passion and energy back. I saw the highlights and thought – this is what I want to do, this is where I want to be. So I went to trial for the University American Football squad, but even before I set foot on the pitch I knew I wanted to make it in the NFL.”

“In my first ever University game against Stirling, I got two sacks in the first two plays and I thought then, I can actually do this. It was a University All Stars game– I think I had 4 or 5 sacks – and everyone watching started to take notice that I was a serious contender. “

Initially contracted to play professionally in Germany after his graduation in summer 2020, the arrangement fell through with the onset of the pandemic and a global freeze on sporting fixtures.

Undeterred, Oyelola stayed in Nottingham studying for his law finals and training hard in every spare moment. His commitment paid off as he was spotted by NFL International and signed up to their International Player Pathway Program (IPP). Final exams finished, he headed out to Florida for training with some of the top NFL coaches and scouts – all held behind closed doors due to ongoing restrictions.

His first stint in the IPP didn’t lead to a NFL spot – instead he was drafted to the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in the Canadian Football League – the world’s second professional league. This turned out to be a fortuitous move – the side won the Grey Cup – the CFL title – with Oyelola a key defensive figure throughout the season.

Returning to London, he re-joined the IPP and then flew out to train in New Jersey where he received the news last week that he’d been signed to the Jaguars NFL roster.

“This has been my dream for a long time – I’m enjoying this moment, but also already focussing on the next thing I need to do. My personal goal is to be a NFL starter and then win a pro bowl and I’ll continue to do all I can to get there.”

Jason Scott, Head Coach of Nottingham’s American Football programme, added;

“As soon as we saw Ayo play, it was clear he was special – he had an exciting combination of size, speed and power perfectly suited to the game. However it was his mentality which truly shone – he worked incredibly hard; always taking on extra, training in the gym and carefully learning his craft. Every time he was on the pitch it was electric – everyone was waiting to see what he’d do next.”

During his time here, it was important for our coaching team to ensure he was constantly challenged and supported to develop in every area of his game. We’re very fortunate to have a thriving programme here, backed by world-class facilities and support for athletes that all our elite athletes can access.

We’re incredibly proud of all our graduates and what they go onto achieve. Ayo is a fantastic inspiration to the University of Nottingham community – he has shown that if you focus and work hard, you can achieve your dreams whatever they may be.”

Looking to the future, Oyelola is clear that his law degree remains important;

“I’m right at the beginning of my playing career, so for now, that’s my focus. However, I knew I wanted to study law from a really young age and I know I’ll use what I learnt at the University of Nottingham when I’ve finished playing – perhaps supporting fellow players as a sports agent.”

“My advice to fellow University of Nottingham students combining studying and competing at the top level is to give your all. You can make anything you want out of your time here.”

Celebrating Graduation at the University of Nottingham

May 16th, 2022

More than 5,500 students celebrated with family and friends as in-person graduation ceremonies made a welcome return to Nottingham.

After two years where ceremonies could not be held due to restrictions for the Covid-19 pandemic, the university held its first in-person ceremonies since 2019 with an extraordinary celebration of achievements.

The East Midlands Conference Centre welcomed the classes of 2020 and 2021 back for 22 ceremonies that took place between Saturday 7 and Friday 13 May.

Tuesday saw a historic first for the university, as Associate Professor Gabrielle Neher took up the enigmatic role of Esquire Bedell – the traditionally male mace holder at graduation ceremonies.

The Esquire Bedell forms part of the academic procession for graduations and is easily recognised as the officer who carries the university’s mace to the stage and back.

Although not the first female Esquire Bedell in the country (that honour falls to Dr Nicola Hardy of the University of Cambridge) Gaby became the first woman to hold the role in the university’s 141-year history, and was honoured to have taken part.

She said: “I feel enormously privileged to have been selected to become the first female holder of this role at Nottingham. Representation matters, and placing women in key ceremonial roles that are highly visible at graduation reflects our community at the university better.

UoN after all built its first Hall, Florence Boot Hall, to accommodate female scholars, so has a long history of making education accessible to all.”

History was again made the following day as Jaqueline Andrews, of the Business School, became the university’s first female Marshal.

The Marshal carries a baton and leads the platform party in the procession. When the graduands approach the stage to receive the awards, the Marshal leads them to the stage and then checks graduands’ names before the name reader calls them out.

Jackie, who is Skills and Development Officer, said: “Graduation is the culmination of everything we do for the students and is a really happy time so it is great to be involved.

“I had no idea I would be the first woman to undertake the role in the university until it was pointed out to me, it is great these roles are open to everyone.”

Registrar at the university Dr Paul Greatrix said: “After such a long time apart, it was absolutely brilliant to see the whole university community come together to celebrate what is a hugely joyous occasion.

“It’s been great to see a mixture of new and old faces at the ceremonies, and as well as welcoming and congratulating our two new female role-holders, I’d like to recognise the long-standing contribution of John Horton our extremely experienced Head Marshal, who has been a linchpin in these ceremonies over a number of years.

“We were also honoured to be re-joined by our former Esquire Bedell, John Whittle, who interrupted his retirement to lend his support.

“The entire university really pulled together to help make this year’s graduation ceremonies extra special, which is exactly what people needed after a difficult and trying two years.”

REF2021 results: congratulations and thank you

May 13th, 2022

An update from Professor Dame Jessica Corner

Results from REF2021 have reaffirmed the University of Nottingham’s reputation as one the UK’s leading research universities.

I am grateful to colleagues from across our university who made our submission possible and helped deliver our very good set of results.

This include academics, research support teams, postgraduate research students, technicians, REF coordinators, impact officers, library and HR colleagues, digital and technical colleagues, PPSE and finance colleagues, external relations and marketing colleagues and of course, colleagues from Research and Innovation.

I would also like to recognise that our monumental submission was only made possible by a great deal of goodwill, which came in many different ways and far beyond producing the research itself. As examples, anyone who gave time to complete a book or publication, write an impact case study or coordinate a unit submission will have been supported by someone else who may have covered teaching responsibilities or administrative tasks. Everyone has contributed and now shares in our success.

Please look out for acknowledgements of such contributions from individuals and teams towards REF2021 on digital screens around the university, and on social media over the coming weeks.

An overview of our results can be found on the university’s Research Excellence Framework pages; for full details of the university’s REF2021 assessment, alongside that for other institutions, please visit the REF2021 website.

This huge undertaking justifies our share of £2bn of public funding for research nationally per annum and allows us to evidence the remarkable impact of our research on the world.

Critically, REF endorses the role the university research plays in contributing to and benefiting society. In the REF2021 assessment period (2014-21), the lives of more than 100 million people have been positively changed by our research. We saved the NHS £2 billion, thanks to research including influencing vaccine policies, evidencing the value of community pharmacies and helping GPs reduce prescription errors. Legislation informed by our discoveries touches the lives of every UK citizen, from improving road safety, to safeguarding children online to protecting consumers.

We submitted 135 impact case studies to REF2021, and more than half of these are featured as profiles and ‘research stories’ on the impact section of our website.

Please look out for and share our campaign – From our world to yours – celebrating the impact of our research. Look out for #WeAreUoNResearch and follow @UoNResearch.

Council approval received for Digital Core partner

May 13th, 2022

The university Council has approved the appointment of Evosys as the implementation partner for our new HR, Finance and Procurement software solution (part of the Digital Core project).

The Digital Core project team look forward to introducing Evosys colleagues to the university. The Evosys team will be guided by the project team as they start the implementation phase of the project.

As previously highlighted, the way staff engage with HR, Finance and Procurement services on a day-to-day basis is expected to change as we adopt standardised and improved best-practise processes across the university for the first time.

Many of our existing processes are expected to change to some degree. Some examples of these processes are the way in which we all book annual leave, book training courses, claim expenses, make purchases, and undertake recruitment, payroll and reporting.

Evosys will work with the project team to support the implementation of these process changes. They will support the university in moving away from using approximately 42 legacy systems to a modern, integrated, reliable and more secure Oracle Cloud software solution that can be accessed from any mobile device.

The focus over the coming months will be as follows:

  • Assessing the change impact across the university and setting up a dedicated network for change support
  • Aligning our HR, Finance and Procurement process and reporting requirements to system functionality
  • Working with the owners of systems to gain a better understanding of the implications and impact of replacing our legacy systems
  • Establishing the requirements of the 125 identified systems that will receive and send data to the new solution (integrations)
  • Mapping out our organisational structure (hierarchy) so we can build HR, Finance and Procurement processes and approvals based on this. The structure can also be used to inform other processes
  • Preparing our data so that it can be migrated into the new system
  • Configuring and setting up the new system for use at the university

The rollout of the new software solution is expected to take place in the first quarter of 2024. This timescale allows the project team to test the changes fully before they go live and ensure the university can move to using the new system in a controlled manner, minimising the impacts of moving away from using many legacy systems and inconsistent processes.

We look forward to keeping you updated on the implementation of our new HR, Finance and Procurement software solution in further briefing sessions and staff news articles.

For further information please view the Digital Core SharePoint site. If you would like to get involved with this project, please email digitalcore@nottingham.ac.uk.

REF2021 results at Nottingham

May 12th, 2022

The University of Nottingham is again among the best universities in the UK for the strength of its research, as measured by the 2021 Research Excellence Framework (REF2021).

According to analysis by Times Higher Education (THE), the university has improved its placing in each of the three key measures determined by REF – Research Power, Research Intensity and Grade Point Average (GPA).

Of the 157 institutions participating in REF2021, the university is placed seventh in the UK for Research Power, which takes into account a combination of the quality of our research, its international impact, critical mass and sustainability. It is placed 25th in the UK for GPA – an improvement from 26th place in REF2014.

Our own analysis using THE methodology places the university 24th in the UK for Research Intensity adjusted GPA, which takes into account the proportion of eligible staff returned – an improvement from 28th place in REF2014.

The number of research outputs assessed by REF2021 as 4* “quality that is world-leading in terms of originality, significance and rigour” has increased by 50% – against a target of 40% in the university’s 2017 research strategy.

The university’s GPA has improved to 3.34 in REF2021 from 3.09 in REF2014, against a national average of 3.23 in REF2021 and 3.01 in REF2014.

You can see more on our Research Excellence Framework webpage and an extensive range of case studies from our submissions.

Full details of the university’s REF2021 assessment, alongside that for other institutions are on the REF2021 website.

Vice-Chancellor Professor Shearer West welcomed the results, saying:

“Nottingham has often been recognised for the breadth of its research: to achieve quality across the range of disciplines submitted is a reflection of the talent, imagination and dedication of colleagues across the institution. However, I am especially proud of the positive impact that our research has had on people in the UK and throughout the world, which is testament to the determination of our researchers to make a difference to people’s lives.

“It is pleasing to see this improvement in our results, and of course such assessments are by no means the sole way in which we should value excellence in research. We must continue with our commitment to support research of the very highest quality, but REF2021 demonstrates that this work will build from a strong foundation.

“I would like to thank every colleague for their hard work, often delivered over many years, that has contributed so powerfully to submissions for REF2021. I hope you will take some time to reflect and celebrate your individual achievements. I look forward to continuing to work with you to support excellence in research across the institution.”

The REF is the UK’s system for assessing the quality of research in UK higher education institutions and first took place in 2014. It is undertaken by the four UK higher education funding bodies: Research England, the Scottish Funding Council (SFC), the Higher Education Funding Council for Wales (HEFCW), and the Department for the Economy, Northern Ireland (DfE).

It aims to provide: accountability for public investment in research and produce evidence of the benefits of this investment; benchmarking information for use within the HE sector and for public information; and to inform the selective allocation of funding for research.

In total, 157 UK universities and 76,000 academic staff participated in REF2021. Analysis included university research outputs, examples of the wider benefits of research and evidence about the research environment.

This material was assessed by a series of expert panels comprising UK and international researchers, external users of research and experts in interdisciplinary research.

Excel in Science programme: applications for internships open

May 10th, 2022

The university is inviting applications for projects from supervisors across all faculties for UoN’s Excel in Science programme.

Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic students and those from disadvantaged backgrounds are under-represented in funded postgraduate research and hence remain under-represented in academia.

A step change is needed in the diversity of academia as a whole and this change must begin when potential future leaders start their careers.

The University of Nottingham’s (UoN) Excel in Science programme aims to tackle the challenges faced in supporting more BAME students and those from disadvantaged backgrounds to progress into research careers and bring about this much needed, sustained change.

As a part of this programme, we offer fully funded internships for students during term time. These internships are for 10 hours a week and aim to give the student the hands-on experience of being a researcher, from learning new skills and methodologies to working in a research environment with colleagues.

We particularly recruit with EDI criteria in mind, with the aim to provide these experiences to students who may not have thought about becoming a researcher before.

Students will receive a bursary (paid at the real living wage), which we hope will remove students’ needs to find jobs in hospitality or retail and help them to focus on their studies. The sustained nature of the placements, with students embedded in research environments for the whole academic year, is critical in helping to build confidence and sense of belonging.

In 2022/23, each internship will cost: £4,470 (£2,970 for the student stipend, based on an hourly rate of £9.90 and 10 hours/week for 30 weeks/year; and an allocation of up to £1,500 for consumables to facilitate the research activities).

We offered six internships in the 21/22 academic year, funded by Wellcome Trust Institutional Strategic Support Funding and the University of Nottingham.

We are accepting applications for projects from supervisors across all Faculties. To put a potential internship forward, please contact Excel@nottingham.ac.uk for a project form, which will need to be returned by Monday 16 May 2022.

Please contact the Excel in Science Project Manager, Dr Charlotte May, or the Project Lead, Dr Sara Sleigh if you have any questions.
