The university has rolled out a new ‘Travel for Staff and PGRs’ SharePoint Site.
The new site comes as an result of feedback from staff regarding the availability and location of information relating to the university’s travel processes as well as a subsequent Rapid Improvement Event involving members of the Travel Management Committee and other university staff, which was supported by the Getting in Shape team.
It has been introduced to create a one-stop-shop for all university staff and PGR travel-related information and can be used by any staff members or PGR students who require support and guidance on any element of the university travel process.
The SharePoint site brings together guidance from the Travel & Expenses, Operational Resilience, Insurance and Health & Safety Teams into one single resource.
The guidance on teams’ individual sites will be taken down and users directed to the new site. Please note that no changes have been made to university travel processes, this change only relates to where the support and guidance for those processes are located.
The site contains information to support staff or PGR students with:
It also contains information about what to do in an emergency when participating in University travel, and travel-related news stories and updates.
The Travel for Staff and PGRs SharePoint site can be accessed here.

It is now easier to report safeguarding concerns through the University of Nottingham Report & Support tool.
Report and Support has been used across the university for both staff and students to share any concerns they have about incidents they have experienced, witnessed or been told about.
We have now extended this for it to hold information on safeguarding concerns, which will enable full oversight and reporting to the Safeguarding Steering Group, as well as ensuring we are able to put appropriate support packages in place.
University staff (including contractors, associates, volunteers, etc) should report all safeguarding concerns using the ‘Speak to an Advisor’ functionality and students can also be encouraged to report in this way, or anonymously.
The University of Nottingham Safeguarding Policy has been updated with this information, as has the UoN Safeguarding Resources SharePoint site.
The section entitled ‘What to do if you have a concern’ has updated flowcharts detailing the process and the ‘Safeguarding Leads Contact Details’ now contains information for all central, Faculty & Professional Service Department Leads. Please reach out if you need any advice or support from any of them.
We have had a great response to the training we are currently providing on safeguarding – if you haven’t booked your place, please check the information provided previously on Campus News and chose the right course for you.
There are still some spaces left for the 2-hour briefings in July 2022.

The university has committed to science-based carbon reduction targets for our UK operations and has released the 2030 Carbon Management Plan, detailing how we will get there.
2030 – 63% reduction in emissions (science-based target)
2040 – Net zero carbon target (with offsetting)
2050 – Absolute zero carbon target (without offsetting)
To meet our 2030 target we need to reduce CO2 emissions by 26,848 tonnes.
These targets are in line with the Paris agreement to keep global temperature rise below 2 degrees C by 2050. They encompass our emissions that come from our use of gas/fuel and electricity.
These emissions are in our direct control and therefore, in theory, easiest to tackle.
The Carbon Management Plan also establishes the following commitments by the university:
Read more on our sustainability webpages.
The university is doing a lot to reduce emissions, but everyone at the university has a part to play to help to meet our ambition. It will be impossible for us to meet our net zero and other carbon targets without the support and efforts of the entire university community. Individual actions combine to have real collective impact.
The university’s energy bill is set to rise to £17million this year alone. Energy saving measures are needed now more than ever to reduce carbon emissions but also to enable us to save money so that more is available to be spent on our research and other activities.
Around 75% of the university’s electricity use is directly influenced by individual’s actions. If all lights on our UK campuses were left on overnight, it would create around 15 tonnes of CO2 in a single evening.
That’s enough electricity to power the average house for over 20 years.

Tomorrow – exactly 100 years since the Trent Building foundation stone was laid, a moment of hope and ambition for the future – we’re launching our first ever Nottingham Ambition Giving Day and would love you to spread the word, or even donate.
Starting at 8am tomorrow (14 June), running for 36 hours, the Campaign and Alumni Relations Office (with support from numerous colleagues) is raising funds to create scholarships for disadvantaged students; support medical research to improve people’s lives; deliver student-led mental health projects; and student-run Cascade projects that truly make a difference to the world around us.
We’ve enlisted the support of some of our most recognisable faces too, including a specially commissioned poem from Nottingham’s first poet laureate Georgina Wilding and videos from Dr Tedros and Professor Sir Jonathan Van-Tam.
Please share the link to the website, our videos and help spread the word about the giving day – help us build on our foundations and make a significant impact on our university’s future.

The university joins its partners in Midlands Innovation committing to implement recommendations from a national policy commission that will strengthen the future of technical skills and staff in higher education and research.
The TALENT Commission report was published in February 2022 and has generated new strategic insights into the skills, roles and careers of the UK’s technical talent and vision for the future of the sector.
It outlines 16 overarching recommendations for employers, funders, government, policymakers, professional bodies, learned societies and technicians to collectively ensure that the UK has the technical skills, roles and careers required across academia, research, education and innovation.
Aston University, University of Birmingham, Cranfield University, Keele University, University of Leicester, Loughborough University, University of Nottingham and University of Warwick have pledged to action the TALENT Commission employer recommendations within their institutions.
This includes taking a strategic approach to future technical skills and plugging any future skills gaps, addressing existing EDI challenges, costing technicians on grants and proposals consistently, broadening technical career pathways and expanding technician job families, making it easier to attract the best talent to create a diverse technical workforce.
Director of Technical Skills and Strategy from the university and TALENT Project Lead, Kelly Vere MBE was part of an allocation of speakers at the TALENT Commission Parliamentary Reception, which hosted more than 130 delegates.
She said: “The TALENT Commission report is the culmination of almost two years of research and insight into technical skills, roles and careers in the higher education and research sector.
“It provides foundational new strategic understanding of our vital technical community, supporting the sector to ensure that the UK will be a global superpower in science, engineering, and the creative industries, enabled by its technical capability across academia, research, education and innovation.
“We are grateful to Research England, part of UKRI, for funding this work. We also thank our team of Commissioners for their wise guidance and positive engagement and the many research participants we engaged with throughout this research,”
The University of Nottingham is also a founding signatory to the Technician Commitment, a national initiative to ensure the visibility, recognition, career development and sustainability of technical roles and skills in UK higher education and research.

The University Executive Board has agreed to raise the current standard maximum pay spine for staff at Levels 4, 5 and 6 it was confirmed today, to help support staff who are experiencing significant cost-of-living pressures in the current economic climate. The measure will provide a 3% uplift for all colleagues who are currently on the standard maximum points of these pay scales when it is implemented in August 2022.
Raising the current standard maximum pay spine for staff at these levels will provide a 3% uplift for those who are currently on the maximum point of the scale, in addition to those who will receive an increment due to satisfactory performance. Where eligible, staff at these levels who are already paid above the standard maximum will receive a non-consolidated payment equivalent to one increment point (3%).
Eligibility and implications for the above on the Nottingham Reward Scheme can be found here.
Separately, UCU is currently consulting members on the 2022 national pay offer by UCEA which would see staff receive a 3% increase in pay in addition to any incremental pay progression and other local rewards or promotions.
The University is also reviewing terms and conditions for staff at Levels 1, 2 and 3 to inform local pay negotiations for these staff groups, and subject to discussions with the Unison and Unite unions, aims to apply the resulting outcomes into salaries from 1 August 2022. In addition, the University will remain committed to pay the Real Living Wage as the minimum salary for contracted staff.
The current Senior Pay and Banding Review is focused on professorial staff at level 7 to ensure that they are able to progress more fairly up the pay scale and better reflect their contribution to the research, teaching and leadership at the University.
Vice-Chancellor Professor Shearer West said:
“Increasing the maximum pay spine for staff at Levels 4 to 6 will help to support staff who are experiencing significant cost-of-living pressures in the current economic climate, as well as ensuring that the University can thrive in a highly competitive employment market. And our local review of terms and conditions for staff at Levels 1 to 3 will inform negotiations for their pay settlements in August.
“However, I am in no doubt about the additional economic pressures to come in the autumn and will want to ensure that staff at all levels are supported as far as we can.
“Our agreement with the University UCU Branch commits the University to supporting the highest possible national pay award, whilst recognising that UCEA must meet the needs of all its members.
“More broadly, the University is looking at the steps that we can take in our recruitment and retention approaches, alongside career development support, to create a model which enables us to respond to the some of the current challenges in recruitment and retention of staff.”
The measure to raise the current maximum pay spine for staff at Levels 4, 5 and 6 was included in the recent agreement where the University Executive Board and University of Nottingham UCU Branch have worked collaboratively to agree a package of measures based on a shared understanding of what can be resolved locally. You can read the full agreement here.
