Are you working with human tissue?

May 18th, 2015

Do you have any human tissue (blood, body fluids, frozen tissue, slides, wax blocks or bones) that the Human Tissue Management Group (HTMG) doesn’t know about?

The University of Nottingham is licensed by the Human Tissue Authority for oversight of the use of human tissues for teaching and research.

In addition to covering human tissues such as blood, urine, saliva and samples of solid tissues such as frozen tissue, microscope slides or wax blocks, the holding of human bones also comes under the Act.

The Act is not intended to cover collections of DNA or cell lines derived from human tissues.

Those using human tissues anywhere in the University, including simply storing human tissues, are required to have such material under the oversight of the Human Tissue Act.

Within the University several licensed premises have already been defined under the Human Tissue Act and a Person Designate appointed to oversee local use of human material.

ACTION REQUIRED

If you are storing or using human tissues without an active (current) NRES ethical approval in place and you are not in premises already licensed under the Human Tissue Act, please email kate.shepherd@nottingham.ac.uk to check if your work or holdings needs to be brought under the license.

New UEB role to oversee the student journey

May 14th, 2015

The structures supporting teaching, learning and research at The University of Nottingham are changing. The launch of Strategy 2020 and the work of Project Transform place our students, the student journey and student satisfaction firmly at the heart of everything we do. We need to put in place the technology, organisation design and leadership to support and guide this change.

With this in mind, a new role has been developed to lead on the management of the student lifecycle. The Chief Student Management Officer will take direct accountability and responsibility for administrative student services, from registration to graduation.  The role will be a member of University Executive Board, reporting initially to the Director of Project Transform, and responsible to Deputy Vice-Chancellor Prof Karen Cox as project sponsor.

The successful candidate will work closely with the new Faculty PVCs, the Registrar, the Chief Marketing and Communications Officer and the Director of the Campaign and Alumni Relations Office to ensure that every student receives the best service from us — from their first enquiry, through their time at University, to their relationship with the institution as alumni.

Project Transform will see the standardisation of systems and processes across the UK, China and Malaysia, implementing an enhanced professional, personalised service for all our students — whichever School or campus is their home. The new Chief Student Management Officer will be responsible for all new systems and structures that the project introduces.

The project will also see a major re-organisation of professional services staff connected with the project, ensuring that the new system is properly run and supported. The Chief Student Management Officer will manage this change, promoting engagement of all staff with the new way of working, and encouraging us all to play our part in its success. Reporting lines may change to reflect the responsibilities of the new role. We will share more information on the detail of this in due course.

Please share this news with your teams, via email and in briefings. The role will be advertised from Monday 18 May. More information about how the new role will impact on you and your team will be shared as the project progresses.

Introducing – the Organisation Design Working Group

May 14th, 2015

Project Transform will completely overhaul our student records system, and all of the systems and processes connected to the student journey. This huge impact on our ways of working will need a new organisational structure to support it, and to ensure that our students receive the best possible service.

Organisation Design Workshops were held in March to examine potential models for a new University structure. All schools and departments were represented at these workshops, along with students. These workshops highlighted the need for a smaller working group to develop further the proposed model.

The Organisation Design Working Group is chaired by Prof Sarah O’Hara, Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Academic Planning. It will meet once a week throughout May and July, with the aim of producing a proposal for the future organisation design. This will be presented to the Project Transform Programme Board in mid-July. The group is made up of senior representatives, both academic and administrative, from across the University, together with colleagues from the Students’ Union.

During this design phase, the group is responsible for reviewing the current state data analysis and subsequent follow-up activity, as well as reviewing and refining the organisation design principles which were proposed during the workshops held in March. It is anticipated that the current student service centre concept will evolve and be expanded across all UK campuses initially, with the role, functions, numbers and locations of these centres to be decided by the group. This change will then be put in place by the new Chief Student Management Officer.

The organisation redesign will see the realignment of delivery between schools and the central service departments. The Working Group will decide exactly what that looks like – which services will sit locally in Schools/Faculties, which will sit centrally and which will be delivered through service centres. We will share plans for the redesign by the end of 2015.

The Working Group will work closely with colleagues in the Project Transform team responsible for redesigning processes connected to the student journey.  This will help them to develop proposals for where our services and support can be best delivered. Additionally, the Working Group will develop proposals for the governance of the new organisation design, as well as develop principles for career development and progression for staff working as part of the new model. And a Challenge Group, consisting of academic and administrative colleagues, will scrutinise the Working Group’s findings and decisions.

Outputs of the Working Group will be communicated on a regular basis, both through the University’s internal channels and your school or department representative.

Thanks for your support through this process. The high ambitions of the institution, which is large and complex, require systems and structures which will deliver the best for our students in terms of service and processes and we all need to play our part. Please share and discuss this with your teams, and feed back through the group members.

Aviva Community Fund – support Enactus Nottingham and vote now

May 8th, 2015

Enactus Nottingham are looking for as many people as possible to vote in support of their projects in the running for the Aviva Community Fund.

The projects with the most votes will go through to the final, where they may be awarded a grant of £10,000 – £25,000.

The two Enactus projects are:

  • Recovered – recycles and repairs waste furniture to provide affordable items that some of the most socially deprived in the community can buy to furnish their home. Helping to make housing into homes, the project also offers employment and volunteering opportunities for those struggling to get into work.
  • Think for the Future – there have recently been high profile cases surrounding grooming, and OFSTED has found that schools are struggling to deliver education that will help guide young people. This project is committed to helping young people to protect themselves from the situations life can throw at them. Using reformed individuals who have had a history of crime, or who have been exposed to sexual abuse, the project delivers engaging sessions in a variety of environments to help young people navigate through life choices.

How to vote

Anyone can vote – it takes two minutes to register, and your support could make all the difference. If you wish to delete your profile after voting, all you need to do is contact Aviva.

Enactus Nottingham is a not for profit, student-led organisation that exists within The University of Nottingham, which works to transform the lives of people in need through the power of business.
