Service Centres to put students at the heart of the University

July 23rd, 2015

A new network of Service Centres designed to put students at the heart of the University has been approved by the Project Transform Programme Board.

From August 2016, the majority of administration tasks and processes linked to the student journey will take place either online or in new Service Centres, located across the University’s UK campuses. This will improve the student experience significantly, ensuring consistent, friendly, informed interactions both online and in person — however the student chooses to access the service, and wherever they are based.

This marks a step change in how the University supports its students. The new Service Centres, combined with a comprehensive, single sign-in student records system, will transform the student experience at Nottingham. It demonstrates our very real commitment to ensure our students are able to access the services they need in the most convenient manner at The University of Nottingham.

The proposal to move to this new organisation model was developed by the Organisation Design Working Group, chaired by PVC Professor Sarah O’Hara. It has the support of the University Executive Board and was approved at the Project Transform Programme Board.

Colleagues currently based in Schools and Professional Services departments in a role connected to student administration are likely to be affected by this change. Leadership of the new Service Centres will be the responsibility of the new Chief Student Management Officer.

These changes mark a transformation in service delivery at the University, moving us to a set of services designed to support students and academic colleagues in the most effective way possible.

The transition requires your help. It will affect hundreds of colleagues across the University directly, and will require the understanding and patience of many more. We will of course be consulting colleagues and Trade Union representatives over the proposed changes. The success of Project Transform requires the support and commitment of all of us. I look forward to working with you on this exciting new challenge — and cementing our position as a global University with students at the heart of everything we do.

Professor Sir David Greenaway
Vice-Chancellor

It was always #MeantToBe

July 23rd, 2015

For most people it was the first time they visited one of our beautifully landscaped campuses.

Thousands have felt it in our lecture theatres and halls of residence, in our laboratories and as members of our societies and sports teams.

Some people have felt it whilst watching videos of our academics on YouTube, for others it came when they discovered their favourite place to enjoy a spot of lunch by the lake.

Whether staff, current students or alumni, we can all remember that moment when we realised that The University of Nottingham was the place we were meant to be. This August, thousands of new students will get that feeling as they open their A level results, confirming their place at Nottingham and we want to celebrate their success with them.

AMBA awards five year re-accreditation for the Nottingham MBA

July 23rd, 2015

The global accreditation organisation the Association of MBAs (AMBA) has confirmed re-accreditation of all Nottingham University Business School‘s MBA programmes in the UK, Malaysia, and Singapore for a further five years.

Five years is the maximum accreditation AMBA can award. The report from the AMBA peer review team was very positive and included a number of commendations including the impressive diversity of Nottingham’s MBA cohorts , the revision of the MBA curriculum to include an overt international focus, and the enthusiasm of students and staff.

For potential students, accreditation provides a reliable indication of quality. For business schools, it gives international credibility to their MBA provision and an overview of their position against international standards. For the MBA graduate, it gives reassurance of the degree’s value, and for the employer it guarantees the quality of the MBA. It confirms that to recruit an MBA from an accredited school is to recruit top talent.

Achieving accreditation from AMBA is a rigorous process. The quality of MBA teaching is assessed, as well as academic research, administrative support, resources and facilities, faculty size, admissions procedure, quality of student body, design and content of the MBA curriculum, structure, duration and delivery.

The Nottingham MBA offers unique opportunities to study in the UK, Malaysia, and Singapore and specialist MBA courses in Finance, Entrepreneurship, Healthcare, and Corporate Social Responsibility.

Find out more about AMBA on their website.

Following a rigorous search, Professor Dame Jessica Corner has been appointed as Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Research and Knowledge Exchange at The University of Nottingham.

Currently Dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences at the University of Southampton, Dame Jessica will assume leadership of this key portfolio on Friday January 1 2016.

Internationally competitive research performance is central to The University of Nottingham’s success, with a current portfolio of awards exceeding £550m.

As a member of the University’s Executive Board, Dame Jessica will provide strategic leadership for research and knowledge exchange at an exciting time as the University drives delivery of its new strategic plan.

Dame Jessica said: “I am looking forward to the exciting challenges that lie ahead in my new role at Nottingham. The University is well known for its impressive research portfolio and I am thrilled that I will be able to work with the Executive Board to lead research through its next stage of development.”

Dame Jessica has over 25 years’ experience in higher education. She was one of the first students to graduate with a degree in Nursing from London University and then went on to specialise in cancer nursing at the Royal Marsden Hospital before completing her PhD at King’s College. She was Director of the Centre of Cancer and Palliative Care Studies at the Institute of Cancer Research, London for 12 years and was the first nurse to be appointed to a Chair at the Institute. She joined the University of Southampton in 2002.

Throughout her career her research has focused on improving the care and support for people with cancer; mostly recently Dame Jessica’s focus has been on health outcomes following treatment for cancer as part of national and international efforts around cancer survivorship. In 2005 she was seconded to the charity Macmillan Cancer Support to work as Director of Improving Cancer Services, returning to University of Southampton in 2008 to become Head of the School of Health Sciences. She was appointed as Dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences in 2010 and continues to advise Macmillan Cancer Support as Chief Clinician.
